I like how Sanctum started the "trend" but nobody on Giant Bomb seems aware of it because it's not on XBox LIVE.  Ah, consoles.  It's also colossally better than Orcs Must Die, which bored me to tears about 2 minutes in. That said, Dungeon Defenders actually looks pretty good and I know even a bunch of people who are normally quite :monocle: about things enjoy it, so I might have to take a look.

Who are you referring to when you say nobody on Giant Bomb is aware of it? There was a Quick Look back in May. I'd also like to point out that Dungeon Defenders came out on iOS and Android months before Sanctum was released.
Fair enough about the Sanctum Quick Look, didn't realise it was there.  It's just that they've been talking about tower defense games lately a fair bit and haven't mentioned it once, even though I haven't seen anything that is even remotely as interesting or replayable.
Ah, okay. I was asking because I thought you might have meant users on the site. I feel like every time I see something like this people say things like, "I don't like tower defense, but this looks interesting because you have control over a character." as if it's the first time that's been a thing.

@TwoLines: I dunno, I beat Torchlight with the wizard pretty easy. I specced him into the pet tree and just let them kill everything. It was the most easy mode class I've ever played

@UnrealDP: I know absolutely nothing. Hopefully they'll release a DLC expansion for the game--including some more maps and those two classes. Will gladly pay $5 for it.

And boy, am I ever curious about that last one. I mean, Barbarian... whatevs. But that last one looks like a crazy inventor lady, judging by the silhouette.

I think part of Brad's problem with the wizard guy is that he's playing this more like an action game than a tower defence game. He's not really gathering every bit of mana and laying down towers effectively. He's just running around swinging his sword madly (which is fine, just a different play-style). The wizard guy has way better 'towers' than the melee knight class he's playing here. If you lay down towers properly you can beat the first 4 waves of that map without even having to shoot anything with the wizard... Also the wizard has a secondary attack that does a bunch of AoE damage around him... I assume he never even used the secondary attack... Not really Brad's fault for missing this stuff though, the game doesn't exactly let you know about any of these things clearly.

Did they even realize that this is a tower defense game? Pretty much just showed off the art style and the melee combat part of the game, skipping past all of the tower defense part.

Painful to hear Brad talk and see Patrick play the apprentice. It's the easiest class if you have any kind of understanding how a TD game works. Hint: towers.

I just wanted to say that the wizard is a fine starting class. I started with him and he was just fine.

I would be willing to bet that Brad horded all his mana instead of investing it in towers. A wall(and you don't really need this) and a couple towers at the choke points and you will rape every wave EASILY. Try starting with the huntress now she is hard.

I really want to like this game. I pre-ordered it on Steam for the fun pre-order TF2 goodies.

So far, I feel like Orcs Must Die is a better defense game, overall, but it is only single player.

Dungeon Defenders is a more in-depth, long-term experience and co-op is a damn nice option to have. However, I've played it 3 times in the last 3 days... and each time i fire the game back up my character(s) are missing. I'm bored of doing the first level over and over... how in the hell are you supposed to save your character?

Would you guys prefer the video be twice as long while I sold all my previous defenses and remade everything? The clunky, plodding interface is one of my major complaints about this game and I didn't want to continue slogging through it just to drag things out unnecessarily.

I made plenty of towers behind walls when playing this game in my off-time, and it didn't help much. Even building as many of the wizard's basic tower as I had mana for, the later waves still overwhelmed my defenses. The wizard class at low level feels underpowered and makes a bad first impression. Deal with it!

So far, I like Orcs Must Die! a little bit better as well. I think they are good compliments to another though, because as you said, one is strictly single-player, and the other pretty much requires multiple folks and has a little more depth to it. Sometimes though, I don't want to have to fuck around with rounding up friends or playing with random people, and I just want to play a game. So having something like Orcs Must Die! that is strictly one player and balanced for just that experience is nice. Orcs Must Die! is much more fast paced as well, which I like a bit more.

@Brad: Also! If you haven't yet, I really recommend doing the Full Tutorial. It explains a couple things you may have missed, such as the ability to build towers mid-battle, that loot is outlined with a box in red, yellow or green (Downgrade, sidegrade, upgrade.) so you don't have to wait for the thumb thing to pop up (Though later on you just grab whatever cause shit gets so crazy.) and stuff like that. I actually found the interface to be pretty pleasant to use in this game once I played the tutorial.

Instantly intuitive? Nah... but once you get a basic grasp for it, it's easy. For example, you can TAP RB (Not hold!) to bring up your wheel, and just flick the stick in whatever direction, no holding is necessary on any of that stuff.

I know you're not here for a lecture on the game mechanics, but it makes a lot of things really friendly, such as the ability to lock your gear (That's why you couldn't sell one of your items.) so that you never accidentally sell or trade it, unlocking and locking is both free and instant. You're right in that the Squire is by far the best class early on, as posts on the forums will obviously allude to (The devs say that SQUIRE is supposed to be the novice class, not the Apprentice, not sure how they screwed up that one.) and that in later game, all the classes are much more balanced. Of course, it was instantly argued back that the game should be fun for ALL classes right off the bat, but I enjoyed my Apprentice a lot. The Monk, however, I find to be the most fun.

Definitely play the game with friends. Randoms are alright, but playing with friends really brings it all together. You can all be Squires if you want! The game is really deep, and really fun, I hope you stick with it and enjoy it because it's a real blast. There's a LOT of unexpected stuff in the game, and the Ogre you almost saw was just the tip of the iceberg!

The game starts off soft but really ramps up when you level up quite a bit. I have a 28 squire and he devastates. The first 10 levels are pretty boring, but after that it is great. I recommend going to insane difficulty on the first level at around lvl 12. You can get to lvl 20 in two or three games of that.

This game has a game-breaking bug on PS3 where if you turn on your system with the BT remote, you won't be able to play DD with a DS3 or Sixaxis controller. You have to restart your system and use a controller to turn it on to be able to move your character around. I'll consider buying the game when they fix that and have a sale since this is the only game I've seen have that issue.

Unfortunately for you it's far superior to both and this Quick Look just didn't show that off since it was single-player on baby levels on what was clearly easy difficulty. So now you have to go spend $15! Trust me, you'll like it.

It's a great game and fun online. Shame the tutorial is poor on explaining that you can lock/unlock items to keep them safely kept in inventory. As well as the SELL ALL BUTTON that Brad missed. So much needs to be explained by the devs I don't know how they left out so much. Really hurts the game.
