Man, this quick look was so alienating. I know the Giant Bomb guys like to keep things loose and say what they want, but there's a certain point where you need to police what you're saying at least a little bit. You can absolutely have an entertaining quick look without inserting a bunch of horrifically ignorant generalizations.

The joke with Monsanto's seeds is that they DON'T give seeds. They give you the pesticide, they give you the seeds that resist it and those seeds don't give out seeds, and you're locked into buying from Monsanto again.

@dstopia: I think in any other field than farming (i.e. food production), Monsanto wouldn't get nearly as much shit as they do. Its a very well run business. But because food production is such a vital need for literally every single human being alive, it does come off as "evil businessman hates everyone." I'm no scientist, but people are going to look for the cheapest possible way to do everything possible. If Monsanto didn't enforce their trait and variety patents so strictly, they would sell one load of seeds one season to every farmer, and then never make a dime off of it again. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the existence of plant variety patents for the exact reason that food IS such a crucial need for the entire world, but they exist, and someone else other than Monsanto needs to get off their asses and come up with another solution or nothings going to change. Even when that better solution is found, whoever comes up with it will just cover it with the same patents Monsanto has used and its going to be exactly the same.

Really getting tired of Dan's 'So - explain the world to me'-bit.

@ulyssesmcqueen: God forbid someone wants a down to earth, layman terms explanation of something. The world is a vast and complex place. There is nothing wrong with wanting that complexity dialled down and explained to you a little bit.

It isn't a "bit". It is genuine confusion and a desire to learn. The fact that you are looking down at that is just sad.

The camera constantly drifting up is infuriating to watch. Is it Dan doing that or is the game broken?

Also Dan's schtick is getting old.

Honestly though, I think talking about a bunch of stuff that you are wondering about, is totally alright. Better curious and willing to learn than forever ignorant.

I mean, at some point you get into a discussion about patents and whether they do more harm than good, in the way they're set up. I don't think it's a discussion for comments in a videogame website, and I wasn't passing any particular judgment on Monsanto, I just wanted to state the (main) reason why people hate Monsanto.

Then main problem I see when people discuss this is that they conflate a bunch of things in "Monsanto sucks" in ways that make no sense. Modifying food DNA in and of itself is not a cause to rally against, unless you're an insane person.

I do organic gardening for food as a hobby. I do it because it's fun -- not because of some crusade against "the man". And yet whenever I want to talk about my hobby online I feel like I have to deal with crazy people. I'm just a little annoyed about the way people just dump only tangentially related things into a single issue because it makes it easier for them to understand.

@rossco81: Other than Dan's stuff about eggs and wheat (which aren't really generalizations I guess, just incorrect statements), their discussion about GMOs and the people who are against them were pretty reductive. There was also Dan continuing his pattern of condoning and being excited about violence talking about how Buzz Aldrin punching someone in the face was great (he's said some really questionable stuff about being able to shoot people in the past). However, the thing that most disturbed me was when Jeff said (I'm paraphrasing) that we're better off not knowing how the government conducts their business because their exact methods might not be appealing but overall we should trust that they're doing a good job. So maybe generalizations wasn't exactly the right word, I should have said opinions and statements.

Farming Simulator 17 is tearing the Giant Bomb community apart! Would have expected a Mario Party game to do it but we can't predict our doomsday.

i'm more angry that the player doesn't get chopped to bits when jumping on the combine! >:(

@ripelivejam: I think he's more tired of it being in every piece of video content featuring Dan.

Especially when it is Dan and Jeff, most of the time it results in Dan asking questions that are either off topic or vaguely related to the theme of the game, and Jeff either going yes or no and then proceeding to explain or giving his opinion.

Personally I would love there to be more focus on the game itself. Like how they did with the My Summer Car QL.

What annoys me more than Dan's ignorance or lack of knowledge to begin with, is the fact that while he is curious enough to ask questions to his peer group, he is not curious enough to google, look up on wikipedia, read journalist pieces or watch documentaries about various subjects. It's mindboggling.

Excuse me? I was talking about dominating the conversation with topics that belong in a kids tv show. I have no clue what you're talking about tho.

@dstopia: Couldn't agree more with any of what you said. Sorry, I work at a patent law firm, so when the subject comes up it kind of triggers me hahaha. And also, the past two months I've had to be on the phone almost daily with either Monsanto representatives of seed companies that license their varieties so its a topic that pisses me off at work enough that it bleeds into normal life (is a videogames website normal life now?!?!?! what have I become?)

Though it is worth remembering that, historically speaking, conversations on the site have heated up several times in the past and cooled down again on their own, so there's no reason to believe this will be any different.

I feel like a majority of our community here are being tremendously harsh and quite mean towards Dan and Jeff here (mainly Dan). They are not experts in agriculture and we should not expect deep, meaningful agriculture commentary from them. What we should expect is commentary on the game, which unfortunately, in the case of Farming Simulator, is extremely inaccessible and to many people, disinteresting.

I'm not really sure what else could've been expected from this QL.

@nomiconic: Yeah I think it's important to remember that science isn't always perfect or right at all times. Trusting every scientific study you find at face value can also be a dangerous thing. But when it comes to an overwhelming majority siding one way like in the case of global warming, I think you should be inclined to believe it. Also, global warming just makes logical sense.

That is not where I expected this quick look to go, but I quite enjoyed listening to Jeff tell Dan about things.

This might seem like a weird criticism but I think there is too much game in these compared to the other ones and it kinda takes away from what it was.

You guys need to toss that controller, burn it.
