@RitzkriegRap: I assume the rule is different in what we Americans call "British English," but in American English a group of people such as a team or a company is treated as a singular (which is weird, but it's the way it is). So "Arsenal has" is correct in the United States.

Again, I assume the rule is exactly the opposite everywhere else in the world.

As a Liverpool fan, Vinny's performance was about the standard I have come to expect as of late, maybe even a little better tactically.

I think it's funny to watch Vinny & Jeff perform as badly as I do at sports games. Options are:

a) they continue to be less than mediocre with little comprehrension of the rules

or

b) they lean on their CBS affiliation and get someone in who knows the rules (snore)

I'm going for (a) - Carry on and be Clueless.

Actually there is only one rule, the noun is either singular or plural, Arsenal is singular, Jeff is right. If they want to say "have the ball", they have to say the Arsenals.

You sound like a fucking manchild trying to prove a point, grow up.

That last sentence you wrote is so fucking ironic it's painful

Surely a group can assume both singular and plural form, so "Arsenal has the ball" and "Arsenal have the ball" are both correct, really.

That said, in a battle of grammar between football commentators and Jeff Gerstmann (and myself, I guess), it's not a given who will come out on top.

It depends on how it's phrased really -- just because you're talking about a group doesn't necessarily mean you're using a plural noun. For example, a team might be made of many players, but "team" is still a singular noun (just as "Arsenal" is). So a team competes; its players compete.

It's comments like these that really make me wish we could lock video comment threads.

Seriously, like do people not expect Jeff to make a football/soccer joke?

People seriously need to just ease up. I love the NFL, but I can also laugh at a Madden QL. Soccer fans should be able to do the same. It's not like you're being forced to watch this, and it's also not like Jeff is somehow preventing you from liking your sport.

The latest hardware additions seem to be the enemies of video editors: Kinect, Move, 3DS, Wii, WiiU all have aspects that the audience cannot see if just watching the direct video.

--------

English has so many rules that make sentences sound awkward.

I would be okay with "THE Arsenal HAVE the ball."

If "the" is removed it sounds better as "Arsenal HAS the ball."

Of course I don't make the rules so I don't have much of a say. I go back and forth when referring to a team as a plural.

So I'd say about 99% of Americans don't understand their own language, despite our insistence about making language the centerpiece of discussion. For my money, referring to a multi-part team in this way (Arsenal play Liverpool, Arsenal have the ball) sounds better and makes more sense. I bet there's some ego at play in going to the singular...

But anyway, back to things, that, you know, aren't a waste of time.

Jeff makes fun of just about everything, if you've missed all the various sorts of American accents he breaks into mockingly. The truth of it is, it sticks out moreso when he makes trolls the British, because that's something he does less frequently.

Actually, that wouldn't fly in American grammar either, because "Jets" is clearly a pluralized form of that word. Any commenter would use 'have'.

Giving you an example for 'has', the commenter would say "New York has the ball!"

FIFA! Prepare to watch Giant Bomb fail to understand the basics of the world's most popular sport, football.

Yep, I'm British. I don't mind football jokes: I hate football. Also, Jeff can make British jokes all he wants because they're mostly hilarious (although the poor Dentistry jokes are rather quaintly 1980's). Poor grammar though... I'll set the Oxford English Dictionary on you. Although to be fair, British English vs. American English vs. Oxford English actually has quite a lot of similarity. But Jeff is wrong about collective plurals.

Would have liked to have seen a QL for FIFA 13 on the 360 or PS3 for comparison, since most people agree FIFA 13 is a pretty awesome game.

Poor grammar though... I'll set the Oxford English Dictionary on you.

Let's just see what Oxford has to say:

http://oxforddictionaries.com/words/matching-verbs-to-collective-nouns-american

Collective nouns are nouns which stand for a group or collection of people or things. They include words such as audience, committee, police, crew, family, government, group, and team.

In American English, most collective nouns are treated as singular, with a singular verb:

√ The whole family wasat the table.
√ The government isdoing a good job.

√ He prefers an audience that arrives without expectations.

In British English, most collective nouns can be treated as singular or plural:

The whole family was at the table. [singular collective noun; singular verb]
The whole family were at the table. [plural collective noun; plural verb]
The government is doing a good job. [singular collective noun; singular verb]

The government are doing a good job. [plural collective noun; plural verb]

There are a few collective nouns (in both British and American English) that are always used with a plural verb, the most common of which are police and people:

√ She’s happy with the way the police have handled the case.
X She’s happy with the way the police has handled the case.
√ It's been my experience that people are generally forgiving.

X It's been my experience that people is generally forgiving.

If you aren’t sure whether to use a singular or a plural verb with a collective noun, look it up. Most dictionaries will tell you which is correct.

There, settled. Now everyone shut up about it.
