Quick Look: Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition

Great game but the content system is almost as bad as The Sims.

Is this quick look in 21:9?

I destroyed this game on PS4. I wasn't planning on going back to it but I might after this.

I actually expected this one to be like 1-2h long.

Square Enix released a PC demo for the Steam version. If you just want to try out FF15, it is highly recommended that you first try the demo

Did they do this quick look on the office PC they built recently? Seems like that thing doesn't run stuff so well, framerates kinda all over the place...

Also: The low setting in PC games usually isn't the console setting. Hell, there are plenty of PS4 and Xbox One games running on Pro and X that are comparable to their PC counterparts' High settings, Titanfall 2 being one that immediately comes to mind.

Noctis doesn’t sound anything like Tidus.

I really enjoyed the open world part of this game. It played like a good buddy movie, which is a theme I did not know that I wanted in games, but want to see more of now. Driving around in the Regalia, stopping for photo-ops, camping under the stars at night, breakfast in the morning, it just felt fun.

I lost interest in the last third or so when it went more on-rails. I still beat it, but for how strong I thought the first part was, the second part really disappointed me.

The trick isnt having an SSD, its having an SSD with enough space to dump 150GB onto it without it being full :P

Loved it when I played through it on PS4 last summer. Definitely going to buy it someday, possibly after all DLC from season pass 2 comes out. I really like it, but then again I'm an open world junkie so it's not surprising that I greatly enjoyed the game. This looks so pretty on PC.

Rorie QLs, the best place to learn about Rorie's obsessive dislike of certain inconsequential details within a game!

The thing about the "High resolution texture pack" is that it's not just higher resolution textures. They're different. So you should be able to tell a difference in the environments because they aren't the same but from what I've seen I prefer the original textures.

@magusmaleficus: Having tried the demo this port is not perfect. I have encountered resolution issues and frame rate issues and other people seem to have similar problems on really good specs.

The demo for this game had my GPU memory close to 99%, and I'm not entirely sure what that even means. Game looked fine and was running well, but seeing that super high number makes me think that my PC is going to melt or something.

I still think it's funny this is described as Windows Edition. Having the Windows name on a game just feels weird.

@pr0p: Did nobody bother to explain the whole right analog stick controlling attack types to Rorie? Just mashing the attack button will make any game boring.

The part where Rorie complains about Noctis's voice actually had Prompto speaking, so I'm not sure I can trust Rorie's ears when it comes to audio for this game.

I think the uneven-ness in this game's graphical polish might have more to do with it being an open world game rather than it inheriting last-gen assets. The island water city area of the game (Altisa) is honestly one of the most impressive things I've ever seen in a videogame, both artistically and technically.

The real battle here is Matt Rorie trying to use his mic.

@gbrading: it’s a very 90’s thing. They should release an oldschool box version that’s like those old pc games, some irregular shape like the Tomb Raider boxes.

@ultimaxe: I think the game precaches all the ram you tell it to. You can turn down tram in the graphics settings to lower how much it uses up. If you’re looking at the built in FPS display, the percentage is the amount cached and the first number in that string of three is the actual amount the game is using.

At least that’s my understanding of it.

Using all the available GPU RAM isn't bad. In case you meant "melt" literally, it has nothing to do with the operating temperature of the video card. Modern GPUs are smart enough to throttle down if they're getting close to their thermal design limits, so a game that uses all your video card can give isn't going to hurt anything.

this game has been in active development for 12 years and it's still not the last thing they'll be adding.

Disappointed they haven't added difficulty options. I found the game easy to a fault and couldn't stay engaged with it because I breezed through everything. Final Fanasy has never been difficult but it at least had challenges and often spikes. Hopefully a good difficulty mod gets made.

12:09 actually no you dont need to go back to the main menu when changing settings. Change it to custom, go back to the main menu once, and then you can go back in and change all the settings minus assets and it takes effect immediately.

I went hybrid drive and haven't looked back.

@tahnit: Well yes, they go on to do exactly that before the end of the video. But his point is that even this hard-save requirement is unusual for a PC Game.

Holy shit, you're seriously telling me you can't tell the difference in how the grass looks with and without the assets pack?

I was pretty disappointed with this game. It's not bad, just extremely average.

I tried so hard to get into this game but just could not bring myself to finish it.

@paulunga: Yes, but you don't actually need the asset pack downloaded. Just go into the graphicsoptions.ini file and turn the setting on: if you don't have the high res assets downloaded, it just turns on things like better grass.

@curufinwe: Yeah that confused me too...he also has one of the most badass lines a FF protag has ever said to their villain, right there at the climax of the story.

Story presentation was kinda whack, but I liked XV

I think I might be ready to give this game another shot, especially now that the main story has been completed.

The combat in this looks pretty fun but it seems extremely Japanese to a fault, like not the weird wacky Japanese type of game that is mimicking a western product but a hardcore Japanese RPG that I just don't vibe with all that well - I'm with Rorie that the whole boy-band thing doesn't really interest me.

I guess the reason why I enjoyed FFXIII despite the world at large hating it was exactly because it wasn't like your typical JRPG. The linear structure was something I actually enjoyed and the combat system was this weird thing that I liked getting the hang of - one of the reasons why I also really liked Resonance of Fate back in the 360 days.

That said, I'm currently getting somewhat close to the end of Persona 5, and it's such a long game that I'm ready for some shorter more action packed experience and I don't think I could handle another long ass RPG so soon. Perfect that God of War is right around the corner.

I keep feeling like this is one of the games I most regret not playing more of. Might have to go back now that I have a ps4 pro.

Have to agree about the girly hair styles, the faces, the voices...boy band is the best description...honestly...I stopped being able to do FF when they started getting voice acted and the ridiculous anime-ish stuff started happening. I did all the FF up to I think 9...but couldn't handle 10. As long as the graphics are either so cartoony or so blocky that I can't see all the stupid anime stuff, I'm happy. When I start having to actually hear it...it's like nails on a chalkboard. It's too bad, because FFVII still stands out as one of my greatest gaming experiences...but that was only because there was no voice acting and I was young enough to think the character designs were cool.

@curufinwe: @baka_shinji17: It's still that kinda effiminate higher tone 12 year old who's voice just changed sound. They need voice actors that aren't so boyish.

I am also playing multiple Final Fantasy games at the same time... VII, XII, XIV, XV, and World of Final Fantasy... So much FF. Gotta play more!

Everything Rory says in this is basically the exact opposite of what is said in the Digital Foundry report on this version lol. To each their own though, FF XV was good enough to beat on my PS4 Pro (The HDR is amazing) but certainly not good enough to double dip no matter how good it looks. The game really feels like it was scrapped halfway through development and poorly put together into something different.
