Quick Look: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

Interesting how Drew says about CoD and staying in one place and defending an area for a certain time because CoD4 actually had a few of those. It's only since MW2 that they went all in on the Holly Wood Summer Blockbuster and even then there was a mission where you had to defend a spot for 5 minutes or so while waves of enemies came in.

Halo 1 Multiplayer isnt Halo 1 its reach and no Blood Gulch. I was so excited for this game and that is a letdown

Looks cool but i am a little disappointed that they did not remake "Sidewinder" from Hale: CE. That was my favourite map back in the day.

Agreed - if I want to play Reach multiplayer, I'll play Reach. I played countless hours of Halo PC multiplayer and it was fantastic.

When I was a kid this was my first FPS, and to me it was the best FPS ever. Then I went on to Counter-strike.

It does look like it holds up, campaign looks fun. Even though this has Hang 'Em High,I'll still get it at some point.

Jeff, rad stuff around the 14 minute mark. I LOVE how knowledgeable you are, and how much context you bring to stuff like this. I mean, I was there, so I appreciate it when you set things up like this.

I didn't own an Xbox back in the day but bought this on Xbox Originals a couple of years ago. I keep forgetting to play it.

Wow, there are things about this that look better than Reach. As much as I enjoyed Reach, there was that weird "ghosting" thing going on with the visuals that seems to be missing here. I'll definitely be picking this up.

I'm a huge Halo fan so of course I will be picking this up :D

@JetForceGemini: Like most flaws in old games, the Library has been the victim of hyperbole compounded by years of nostalgia.

drew should be in more quick looks.

Regardless of how good it was in my memory, it's been 10 years and FPS games have come a long way. Also, that they didn't truly recreate the multiplayer as it was is a little worrisome, since all anyone ever really wanted with this game since it was released was a way to play it online.

It also doesn't bode well that 343's first solo game is going to be one with training wheels when they've been handed the reigns to one of the most powerful franchises in gaming today.

I dont know, I for one would really have appreciated a version with a bunch of improvements instead of slavish dedication to accuracy in order to get that novelty toggle working. That's great for Secret of Monkey Island but I'm not sure if it was really necessary here. It's going to be one thing that people look at once or twice, think, "Well that's neat," and never touch again. I'd much prefer a game where they took a good hard look at a classic and said, "Now that we aren't limited by 64 MB of RAM, what should we do?"

Alternatively, An XBLA title that just took a cleaned-up Combat Evolved and dropped in online coop and multi, much like those old tunneling programs used to do but with the benefit of Xbox Live integration and proper matchmaking. I would have probably paid about $20 for that. It could have been a Games On Demand exclusive.

Oh man, I want to dig up my copy of Halo PC and give that a play.

I wish they'd do this to Half-Life.

I'm really bummed that there's no splitscreen.

I never played the original, so I'm excited for Amazon to drop-off my copy tomorrow.

library was awesome man, whenever my friend and I fire up halo, library is one of the levels we always brush up on. That and the one where you start off with sniper rifles and it's dark and you sneak into the covenant ship

I mean... I think it did exactly what it set out to do: be the most grueling gauntlet to introduce you to the Flood. Did I like it though? Not at all. It was mostly just a corridor crawl in one of the most bland level environments the game had to offer.

wonder how well this will sell, i could see it being the best selling hd remake kind of thing.

the team working on this is the team that made reach, not the team that made halo 1. these people make dumb decisions.

I'm happy that they aren't. It's weird enough that they're doing another refresh of Counter-Strike that isn't really Counter-Strike 2. I'm glad that Valve's priorities generally lie in moving forward with new projects, and not dwelling on the past.

Also, if they went and made some Half-Life Anniversary HD edition or whatever, it would probably piss people off because it would remind them that Half-Life: Episode 3 ceased to exist at some point. If they release ANYTHING related to Half-Life in the next 2 or 3 years, it has to be some miraculously not cancelled Episode 3, or more likely a full blown Half-Life 3.

Agreed - if I want to play Reach multiplayer, I'll play Reach. I played countless hours of Halo PC multiplayer and it was fantastic.

I totally agree! i was really excited for this game but now i find out Halo:CE Multiplayer isnt in the game oh wait it will most likely be the upcoming DLC for 10$

I think you're mistaken, unless I'm completely misunderstanding you. The people "working on this" are 343 Industries, who have had no prior involvement with any Halo games. And Halo 1 and Reach were both created by Bungie, so I don't really follow the distinction you're getting at there, as the same "dumb decision" people were responsible for both of those games.

Even though 343 Industries didn't make Reach, they have access to the Reach source code, and chose to use it for the multiplayer in Halo: CE Anniversary.

The heartbeat sound when low on health was in the original too. I remember i got the bass so loud i thought the neighbours was having sex or something...

New sound effects? Thats not the original assult rifle sound

Great game, but I don't think I care to play it again any time soon. So I might pass on this, the visual improvements seem reasonably impressive though.

A bit disappointed with the multiplayer stuff.

I miss playing chicken with the Warthogs in Blood Gulch via lan parties. (when the Warthog wouldn't explode :P) Good times.
