Looks good.

But what's up with all these cyberpunk games coming out now? Is it because of the new Deus Ex?

Looks visually interesting, but if the finesse of the gameplay begins and ends with "shoot the panel" its about as deep as the "hey a barrel next to the guy, shoot it" mechanics of the last decade. And seriously, circle strafing as something mindlessly lumbers your way in 2011. Cmon. Is the shooter mechanics bar that low? Have a little respect for your fanbase, some people can see through the shiny shit and notice this game is mechanically on par with any given shooter from 2004. But hey, it is a demo. Maybe it gets interesting later.
I really don't recall the developers ever touting this game to be the greatest thing to happen to shooters, in fact they were quite frank about the fact that 'Hard Reset' is all about paying homage to old-school school shooters thus rendering the implementation of any antiquated shooters mechanics totally justifiable. Also, I'm kind of excited about the circle strafing, takes away the stale aftertaste of sticking to cover and waiting for the healthbar to get automatically refilled.

They are trying to imitate the FPS of yesteryear where circle-strafing, blazing guns and health bars were pillars of the genre. There seems to be an audience who wants to go back to that old style shooter and this game is giving it to them.

So dated mechanics are chique now? You could just reinstall Quake 1 if you just wanna circle around some melee dude running at you. It won't be as pretty but still. "Classic gameplay" is the impetus JRPG developers have been using to not innovate for the last decade or so. When I get tired of a modern shooter, I'm not looking for a shooter "throwback". I'm looking for something that's not a shooter. If their excuse for mindless AI and dated mechanics is "we know you're tired of modern shooters" its a pretty lame excuse. They could have made a first person puzzle game and then I could be enjoying that its not a modern shooter without being reminded of what annoyed me about shooters 8 years ago.
But again, its just a demo. Maybe it gets better later. And as always, people will defend anything so no need to press this further. Its just one guy's opinion.

Looks pretty sweet. Like they said, the menus and guns look sweet! I imagine Jeff and Vinny would really appreciate those kinds of touches too. Wouldn't be surprised if a GOTY category or two was made to recognise the game, even if it's only for a nomination.

I get that people like Brad can't handle themselves in a modern shooter like Left 4 Dead and this kinda thing is great for them. I'm just speaking from my own interest.  I can't speak for what other people are looking for. It just seems wasteful to me to build such an archaic shooter with such nice looking assets. Also, "old school shooters" were about twice as fast as this. Seems like they just picked random old school tropes to keep like mindless AI and got rid of things like how quickly you had to move. The sheer speed of older games is what made their shortcomings more tolerable, and this is just those old mechanics but now you're moving slow as hell.

Fans of that style of shooter would have probably played the classics to death, no harm in getting new games of that style. You also have to remember that this game is indie, it's not trying to regress the genre but give some players alternatives from CoD and Battlefield. And just because it's old doesn't mean it should be avoided like a leper, those types of shooters are different and never ceased to be extremely fun in my opinion.

The developers are just making a game that has its roots steeped in nostalgic gameplay mechanics but entwined with some minor, modern trappings; I'm pretty sure its not out of some self righteous reason to be "off the beaten path" on the developers part, they're gamers themselves who miss the old days of shooting everything in sight and want to express that by developing a game that incorporates those elements. They are not obliged to cater to everyone out there and you're not obliged to play their game...

Also if you're looking for something that's not a shooter; why bother ranting about an upcoming 'first person SHOOTER'?

They clearly have their own vision and ideas for this game, so what if it doesn't appeal to you? Shouldn't it have a right to exist for the people who do appreciate it? These developers have experience with this type of game having developed Painkiller, this is what they know and this is what they're good at. I think they're a bit small to go outside their comfort zone at this stage.

PcPc!!GO play Jerry Rice Doggy Futball on your console Buahahahahaha!!! Well no real rudness mean't I noted what Brad said about their card, so maybe it could be on consoles. That all said, I really liked what I saw aaannnnnnd it's going to be available very soon. They were smart in not 'hyping' this because I really wonder if all it offers is really just building on and extensions of what this demo has. Sure more intense weapons, hopefully some change-up in enviroment, because the same exact corridor crawl is all I've seen here or in the trailer. PPl. won't be happy about that though if done well I could float.

@OracleXIII: I know eh. That's why I've avoided most of the preview coverage for Deus Ex. I want it to feel new when I play it and see things I've never seen before. For me, it's like take as much time as you need to make the game good just don't tell me about it years before it's done and don't show so much of the game in trailers and developer walkthroughs and shit.

I really don't think the solution to the monotony of modern day shooters is to regress back into the gameplay of Doom or Quake. It's not as if we're restricted to one or the other anyway.

I am amazed people are so enamoured by the game as it appears in this quick look. Almost every encounter consists of shooting conveniently placed items to quickly wipe out a group of enemies. The game doesn't improve on the gameplay of ancient First Person Shooters in any way, really. In fact, I'd say the level design (maybe geography is a better word) is a little worse. The extremely linear paths is a design choice more often seen in "The Modern Shooter" rather than those of the 90s and early 00s.

I just don't get it. I don't even see how this is even considered a breath of fresh air. This genre, when not married to another, is extremely lacking.

House and Movies? Smells like piracy to me, but it could be anything really.

It seems beautiful and retro but as Brad said, it could maybe use a little more substance, craziness or story, or else it could get old quick.

It looks nice, I kinda want to use that menu design for my computer's GUI, but otherwise I'm unimpressed. Every encounter began and ended with Brad shooting a panel and the weapons do not seem at all satisfying. I loved Painkiller, but this video leaves me wanting.

So it's like that scene in a gameplay demo where the guy says "Hey, you can approach any encounter how you want," and then he electrocutes some water to kill the dudes, but then you just electrocute every encounter.

I would be pretty disappointed if there's not some sort of cool story in this game. judging from the first part it seems more painkiller than witcher by far.

also, it looks gorgeous. very blade runner-y. only without all the people.
