Quick Look: Helldivers

Looks intriguing.

Have been playing a lot of this. It's surprisingly awesome. Reminds me of Renegade Ops in that before it came out I had no idea it existed, but it ended up being amazing.

Played a few hours of this in co-op last night and it's awesome. Can't wait to get back to it.

If this game has a fraction of the co-op madness from Magicka then I'm in.

I wasn't particularly interested in this game based on earlier coverage but this QL has piqued my interest. I wonder how big of a difference there is between the 3 versions.

@jeff RE: a comment near the end of the video, even in online multiplayer you're all limited to the same screen.

There's some weird design choices like that online, such as the post-game XP tally doing players one-at-a-time rather so you have to wait for it to cycle through all three other players before you know what you personally earned.

Let me go out here on a limb and say that griefing your friends in games is never fun and is in fact kinda dumb. I never understood it when I'd play games with friends and instead of actually playing the game everyone was too busy knocking each other off platforms or something. To each their own I guess.

Man this looks awesome. Even if it got old fast it looks so fun. Style and graphics are incredible too.

@humanity: games of mk64/goldeneye for me back in the day usually devolved (quickly) into hilarious griefing hell. Personally loved it w/friends but couldn't stand if strangers were doing it to me while i'm trying to do my thing.

@turboman: Thanks for jumping in there and rounding out the team! It was nice that we got to see the exosuit that Brad seemed fixated on.

I've probably put about 5 hours into playing online with completely random people and I have had no party poopers in my game at all. Everyone seems to be playing the game. That's also why the Commend/Report system is so important.

Been playing this game for a few hours and it's amazing, everyone needs to give it a try!

@turboman: Oh yah I'm sure I just meant more in general. I hear the guys talk a lot about how some games are fun because you get to grief your friends in them which is like I mentioned something that I never got.

I'm tempted to get this as I continue with my struggle to play anything until Bloodborne is out - does it change up in any way? Apart from unlocking weapons it seems like you're basically doing the same thing over and over. I'm kinda worried I'll get super bored of it quick.

@humanity: I think the mechanics is something that really helps it out in the way that there's nothing else like it today. There's three different sets of enemies who all are somewhat different in the way they attack you. I'm still not sure if the land masses are randomly generated, but the objectives are.

I'm not sure how deep the weapons/strategems get quite yet, but I know that by level 10 you unlock a tank that all four players can get in which is really cool. If you enjoy any kind of loot grind at all, there's an upgrade to your UAV that will show where the samples are in the map which will help you level up your guns/strategems.

By yourself, the game is stale (and you probably have no chance in progressing past level 3 maps). The game is made for multiplayer and getting a group of four together has been really fun so far, especially on more difficult maps where you're barely getting though it.

@turboman: Does this mean you'll have to highlight yourself at some point? Haha. I'd say you earned it in this one.

I'm way into what this game is shooting for. I also played a bunch of magicka but that game just had too many buttons, too much complexity for any one thing you were doing. This game seems to simplify in the areas that matter, attacking is straightforward, and dailing something in is used sparingly. The extra wrinkle of friendly fire also makes it stand out and seem fresh, requiring a bit more situational awareness when shooting.

Only gripe I have with it is that I don't know anyone who owns a PS4 etc. If I'm gonna play it I'll have to play it completely with strangers, which feels meh.

EDIT: For as much as Brad criticizes the people in DOTA who are brutal to newcomers, he seems to be just the sort who would do that by how he is trying to tell everyone what's what in this game.

I'll admit it didn't really click until three random folks jumped into my game. That SOS beacon is awesome too - Throw it down and the game basically screams out "Yo! This Person Needs Help RIGHT NOW!" into the multiplayer lobbies.

Threw that down, people joined and we were spreading democracy, one burst of SMG fire at a time. Great game.

Sony published so it's not going to happen

I picked this up for my Vita and it's super fun. The visuals on Vita are crisp enough except for blobby shadows. Also to reload you need to swipe down on the right side back touch, and to throw a grenade you swipe the left side down, and hold at the bottom to determine distance. Probably the only thing I don't like about it.
