Quick Look: Killer Is Dead

Man, I really wanted to like this game, but honestly, it just looks kind of meh.

Now that I think about it, every other Suda51 game has left me feeling the same. I started No More Heroes, and quit right around the second boss. I haven't bothered with Killer7 or Lollipop Chainsaw. I do have Shadows of the Damned sitting in my backlog pile, that one looks the most interesting to me.

Even as a Suda fan I find this game pretty off putting. Not even because of the dumb goofy soft-porn stuff but the general gameplay just seems so tedious and boring and the tone and writing is so far crammed up its own ass it reminds me of the worst parts of Evangelion.

Sadly, none of this would bother me (including the sexual stuff) if Grasshopper was better at gameplay.

This has inspired me to continue my streak of pretending Suda 51 doesn't exist.

Other than the visual style this game seems terrible

I don't know. I might still play it. I had a whole lot of fun with No More Heroes on the PS3. The boss fights were all very fun and unique. plus it had some cool little mini-games.

It's good that people aren't giving Suda a free pass anymore. It's a good indication of just how much the industry has grown, storytelling wise, in recent years. Writing is better now; just being goofy isn't enough anymore and that's great.

What's everyone on about, the combat looks pretty fun to me.

It seems like this type of character action games have generally fallen out of favor... Only Platinum and Grasshopper makes them and most people seem to not "get it" anymore. The trend seems to be that they all are terrible at explaining why the combat mechanics are meaningful, which makes people button-mash and die their way through the games.

This is amazing.

Edit: Also. This is incredible. Too bad there's no PC version, so I can't play it.

Suda51's games all look beautiful, but I just don't wanna play 'em

Wow, this game is fucking gorgeous. The gigolo crap is super lame, but holy moly I'm pickin up what the rest of this game is layin down. Crazy fuckin moon mansions and what not.

The combat looks quick and smooth. Maybe not a ton of variety, but between the upgrades, different enemies and fast movement I think I could deal.

Never really into button mashing QTEs, but I've gotten used to it. I'll check this out sometime!

I like Suda 51 craziness, but this game does not look like a lot of fun.

It's sort of astonishing to read these comments by dude posters wherein they profess their eminent bravery for refusing to be offended by being put into the driver's seat of a character who is just fucking leering at women like the sort of bus stop/alleyway creep you feel compelled to call the police about.

@dark_lord_spam: I'm regularly put into the driver's seat of gangsters and thugs who terrorize civilians and law enforcement alike, people who kill people for money, people who kill people for fun, people who commit truly evil acts be it for the sake of the storyline or simply because that's what drives the gameplay.

I think if I'm not bothered by committing pretend massacres and atrocities, I probably shouldn't be bothered by committing pretend social misdemeanors either. We take enough fucked up business as givens in this industry that it seems strange to suddenly be surprised that some people aren't so hung up over the ethical implications of what they're doing in these virtual spaces. I know for myself that if I actually cared, I would have to pass on many of the more impressive experiences that video games have to offer.

The attitude isn't "this behavior is totally cool," or "I like people who go around acting like this," but rather "this is a video game so why does it matter?"

This looks like the perfect example of a $25 game: I won't pay the money now for full price (A-because I'm broke, and B-the next game I'm going to buy is SRIV), but, later this year when I can pick up a new copy for 20-25 bucks, I might go for it. I want a price drop, but I'll gladly still buy a new copy, just to help out the developer in some small way.
