That dynamic lighting effect thing is usually achieved through "ray casting" if I remember correctly.

Also, this may be the quickest of looks since like 2009.

I'm sorry, but the visuals are irksome. Did the developer run out of time and just decide to make every character a cube? They definitely clash with the rest of the art. I have nothing against minimalism with purpose, but this just feels like laziness. I don't think I would have the guts to release a game like this and not be embarrassed.

From the looks of it its a $13 game that lasts 20 minutes, but that couldn't possibly be true. maybe they only sent out a handful of levels, or this is just chapter 1 and there's 10 or more levels per chapter? Fingers crossed.

I'll admit that boiling it down to just blocks avoiding other blocks reveals some of the weaknesses of the genre.

I'm pretty sure @brad is thinking of Mark of the Ninja when it comes to the 2D shifting light/vision source as you move around an environment thing. Hotline Miami didn't have that particular effect iirc (and then I'll be completely wrong :P ). (y)

Oh fuck yes! Hadn't heard of this game until now. I have been wanting someone to make Hitman: The In-Game Map: The Game for ages now. Monaco was too um, busy, i guess. Didn't have the right quiet feel to it. Hitman puzzle game was IOS only. But this! This might be it.

If Jeff and Brad like this they definitely should go back to Monaco. It had so much style, and that is where the dynamic light source Brad is thinking of came from.

I just watched Johnny Mnemonic a few days ago! I actually do think it holds up in terms of stuff going on with the NSA/Wikileaks/Snowden/journalism in general. It also gets into 'information addiction' which in the movie becomes a disease--kind of parallels how some people can't be without their smartphones for even a day.

So yeah it's a dumb movie, but had some good ideas.

They're still very light on equipment, but I think they're hoping to put one together this week (don't hold them to that though).

I watched Johnny Mnemonic because it was one of those movies people always reference. I regret that decision. Just kinda boring. The very end is dumb enough, but... yeah, it's mostly boring.

@brad@jeff Is this game gonna be a Steam release? I can't find it in the store. I know it comes out in two weeks, but often games will have Steam pages up in advance of release. Thanks!

Most people here seem to think the same, so I'm not sure that's really a "varying opinion" :P but I'm glad not everyone agrees with me. This is just my own view, but maybe the developer is on to something...

I agree, but in the other direction. It's not the characters that's the problem, it's the environment! Every obstacle seems to block line of sight, which is easy to make sense of in a more abstracted environment like, say, Frozen Synapse, but when I can clearly see that the character is hiding behind a coffee table or a regular chair, that gets harder to swallow. That conflict could have been solved by having a less detailed environment. Odd!

Also, the environment looks really large but the characters still feel like they move too erratically. Very curious disconnect, there.

Is it just me or is it not strange that Team 17 is "publishing" this game through Steam Greenlight?

To me, this art style seems like something the developer would have had to absolutely commit to in order to make happen. Doesn't strike me as laziness so much as a very defined vision that you don't find appealing.

The greenlight page seems to say Release date TBC and the steam coming soon tab doesn't show this game coming out, and googling this game is a nightmare. How do we know it's coming out on the 14th?

I think "should be embarrassed" is pretty harsh, as I do generally like the look, but I do wish the characters were at least triangular. Would make it a little more obvious what direction everybody is looking in. Those vision cones seem to pop up only after you've wandered into them.
