Quick Look: MLB 14: The Show (PS4)

I'm sure the number 38 thing is because no one expected Grady Sizemore to make the Redsox out of spring training let alone start. He hasn't played in the majors since 2011, hasn't managed to stay healthy enough to play a full season since 2008 and and wasn't on any team's roster (major or minor) last year.

I imagine they just didn't want to, or couldn't get the broadcast team back in studio during the season where they are calling live games.

Definitely agree it really breaks the immersion to hear them refer to him by uniform number though.

They didn't seem super impressed, but those animations (crowd and player alike) sometimes looked incredible! Not always but sometimes.

We're getting there folks. Just gotta fix that hair. Christ.

I'm not normally one to gripe in QL comments, but it bums me out a bit when Jeff's criticism snowballs and he becomes seemingly unwilling to acknowledge positive aspects of a game. Presentation-wise, we're surely looking at the most impressive sports crowd to date, and moments of fantastic player animation, but it's the catcher's pad straps not sitting right or the ball indicator looking odd as it crosses the boundary that he chooses to call out. There's legitimate complaints to be made about the game, but a lot of his seem artificially petty.

Ouch as an owner of game, the minute I saw Install bar in the top left, I cringed as this game literally takes over 30+ minutes to completely install. I put the game in a went for a 30-45 minute walk and when I came back it was around 90%.

For those think that is excessive, please provide a mechanism/service/device that can load and write 42GB of data (either off disc or through digital download) that doesn't take 30+ minutes.

Developers are stuck between a rock and hard place, either they gate everything where users are gated up front by a screen with a install bar and absolutely no gameplay options (ala Playstation 3 game installs) or they dynamically install assets in the background that opens up game options and modes gradually.

Man, that first loading screen. I thought the game had frozen.

This game is really good... If you like baseball a whole lot. The time investment is massive and I can see why some people consider it to be boring, but this year's game is more accessible than it has been in the past with changes to the way your Road to the Show player develops. Also the fully installed product looks great and only slowsdown very rarely. Load times are much more tolerable too, but they are still a little long.

All in all I totally recommend this game if you're on the fence but like the sport.

I hope GB can just install their games before doing Quick Looks in the future. I don't want them to be trying to play while they install and making the game look like shit in the process since it's easy to make fun of any game for that. We don't watch them download and launch PC/Steam games, so why do that for console games?

Man. I don't have much to say about anything regarding sports games, but when that crowd isn't glitching out, it's probably the best looking game crowd I've seen since polygons became a thing. And the shading and self-shadowing on the players is spectacular! I don't know if I only just noticed it or what, but the lighting in this really struck me.

Vinny and Jeff playing sports games is pretty awesome.

(And FWIW, if the game lets you play it in that state, I don't think it's unfair to show it in that state)
