I played the base game of this for about a good week or two straight and loved the hell out of it, but at some point I hit a wall and hit stopped being fun instantly. Eventually I saw through the over map and figured out how to game the system to get the best everything and I was unstoppable at that point. I really wish they would add more depth to the world map and that part of the game, as I was still enjoying the combat after all the hours I put into it as much as I did at the start, but the game just be came too binary for me and it lost so much of its appeal.

I really hope a studio with a better pedigree takes the ideas from this game and runs with it. If it was fleshed out and had some real production values put into it this could be such an amazing game.

The appeal is that it's fun! I haven't played much of it myself, so I can't really speak about the specifics, but this kind of open world, sandbox, non-fixed economy game is always great. The kind where you can benefit different factions, save towns or raid them and capture them for your own needs, be a trader or a warrior or a pirate, run errands for kingdoms to help them take over the world, or try to rule everything for yourself, capturing equipment, building armies... Always really fun to play with.

As for the multiplayer and the combat, it's strangely.. I don't know... realistic? You feel very powerful and very vulnerable at the same time, and it feels like the interplay between different types of soldiers and weapons is very much rooted in reality. The combat is hectic because it's so very tactical. Every attack is blockable, but you have to block in a specific direction, and if the attacker feigns to trick you into opening your guard and you block the wrong way, you're screwed. Horse combat is really tactile, with downhills giving you a speed advantage, and speed giving you a bonus to attack damage but also making it harder to hit enemies... unless you have a lance, which is perfect for pinning dudes on the ground, but then if you find yourself without a horse, you're worthless...

Like they said at the end of the quick look, there's no other game out there that plays like this. That's the appeal.

I'd choose it over Mass Effect or Call of Duty any day. You need to play it to understand it, which is why Dave said Mount and Blade players are going to think its a terrible Quick Look.

I like the premise of the game, but the janky gameplay and the last-last-gen presentation are a bit too much for me to get past.

I'd love to see a real publisher get a hold of this game, and put some money behind it.

Don't. Just get the newest one. There is no reason to play any of the older ones. The newst one is the exact same thing as the previous one, but with more improvements.

Okay. There are less clunky games for that price and there are less clunky games for that size dev team. I just played through Anomaly, a 15 dollar game with a very small team and limited budget and it was a good game. I'm not comparing this game to a triple A game, I'm just making an observation. Shit's clunky. Opinions, people have them. I don't care how many qualifiers you tack onto the game, it doesn't change an opinion.

This makes me want to play Mount and Blade, but more than that I think it makes me want to play Pirates. The combat in this game really intrigues me though, I want to give it a shot.

The developers should probably focus purely on making the combat work cleanly instead of trying to do everything and succeed at nothing. The lack of polish is evident that they chose quantity rather than quality.

Hah, calm down. Look, if you've decided anything that costs 15 dollars or less doesn't need to actually be functional to be appreciated, that's your own deal. A free sample of shitty food is still shitty food, even for the price. But the fact is, plenty of low budget games are actually fun to play, and work like they should. So being low budget isn't some far reaching shield against any kind of problem with the game.

@ryanwho: Nothing against Dave, I love the guy, but you can easily show this game without it looking janky. (As janky maybe) It's actually very good and the controls make complete sense, it's one of those games which looks terrible when you are disconnected from playing it and also when you aren't very good at it, sorry Dave. The first time I played it I thought it was kind of bad, but after a while you realise that it is just pure fun to play. I can totally understand your opinions when based on this QL, the game just works nothing more, nothing less.
