Well, that was just about the most obnoxious I've ever heard Jeff be before, and even right on the heels of the irrational Double Dragon Neon hatred for simply "not being the Double Dragon I know." Petty and reductive for the sake of making his opinion seem "right."

You know what is really awful? You could get the draw distance in Oblivion just as low on the PC.

Never owned a Saturn, never played Nights. Honestly the only part that really looked cool to me was fighting that one boss shaped like a ball that you pushed through the wall or something and it was at this odd angle camera wise. Other than that I'm indifferent. I would'n't say the game looked like shit though, just not for me.

I'm amazed to see so many people 'agree' with Jeff, Jeff's a comedy character like Alan Partridge or Stephen Colbert, the whole point is that they have horrible opinions and if you find yourself agreeing with them that's your cue to start asking questions of yourself.

This game is really disgusting and the people who keep saying "you dont get it!" are even worse.

I always wondered what the hell Nights was, and now I know. I'm really glad I never bought this.

Everybody fawns all over Journey for being a 90 minute, art-first game.

You play it pretty easily, as it turns out. But of course, this is GiantBomb, now isn't it? Gonna bust that crate open for an hour while constantly telling Vinny, "I must be missing something."

Nights is a cool game.

So much ignorance from Jeff in this video.

It's fine when he hates games for a good reason. But then there's the weird irrational "this game is hot garbage!" stuff like this where he seems to never have attempted to play the game, but insists it's awful anyway in the first level.

The level design, the music, the simple-but-intricate arcadey gameplay mechanics themselves... it all combines into a very solid and fun game. It's like the feeling you get in something like, say, OutRun 2 or Crazy Taxi. The first time you play it, it's an incredibly stylish blast. Then you realise that pretty much everything you did can be improved on, and it keeps you coming back for more, to beat your old scores/times.

It's awesome.

For the next endurance run Brad and Jeff can play this until Jeff goes completely mad.

I don't even care about this game. Jeff in a tornado of fury just fills me with glee.

Good thing I read the comments, so now I know that the blazing ignorance about NiGHTS is going to make me fuckin' furious.

Do you seriously think this? It wasn't that long ago that Jeff sat in on a podcast solely devoted to the writing in Spec Ops.

You know how the CG in the special editions of the Star Wars movies has aged to the point where the movies seem really anachronistic and crappy? That's what the HD version of Nights reminds me of. It looks janky as fuck.

This game was one of the first times I ever got to experience full 3D movement (as the kid...not as Nights) and it kinda blew me away at the time. To the point where I'd spend as much time as I could running around in the kid form.

I remember reading at the time how great this game was, but never knew anybody with a Saturn. And seeing it now, it just looks like complete & utter trash, not fun at all. How sad

They're not the only ones to give Nights a 9/10. Twitter is full of games journalists praising the game. Different tastes and different people but worth considering before you completely dismiss this title.

I had the exact same experience with NiGHTS Into Dreams as@Brad back in the summer of 1996. Around the time I was beginning of thinking of upgrading to a Nintendo 64, I went to my local Toys'R'Us and found the Sega Saturn kiosk empty (unsurprisingly). I picked up the analog controller and jumped into the game.

I remember being teleported away from the din of the nearby Nerf section of the store to a world of utter chaos and beauty. Then I tried making the character do what I wanted him to do and I quickly determined that I needed to seek out the Nintendo 64 kiosk STAT! That game sure didn't demo nearly as well as Super Mario 64 did.

Man, what a crazy small section of time the Sega Saturn era was in terms of the kinds of creative/innovative titles getting fully funded by the SEGA internally. SEGA at the peak of their madness/success made for the best competition to Nintendo during the SNES/Genesis era.
