Looks like an unholy combination of superficial Dark Souls mechanics but with none of the atmosphere, gorgeous artistry or lore that FromSoft implemented.

It's Dark Souls for people who like the horrific overdose of loot that Diablo offers and it's wrapped up in some of the most bland (where even am I?!) level design and Dynasty Warriors (via a janky Dreamcast filter) art style.

Every preview or quick look or let's play I've seen has made me want to wash my eyes out afterwards.

I think you picked a bad year for that restriction. There's always sales down the road I guess!

Did you hear them talk about it on the bombcast? They have high praise for the mechanics. But obviously if the graphics rub you that hard the wrong way, then yeah you should probably stay away from it.

Desperately hoping for a PC version seeing as I don't have a console. It seems very unlikely though, sadly. I really want to play this game, dammit!

He enjoyed Bloodborne, from what I remember.

And Let It Die...if you want to consider it a souls game.

Has Sony put money behind this? Is there any reason it definitely cannot come out on other platforms?

Sort of disappointed they didn't go with "His name is Nioh and he slashes in the wind"

I have not payed much attention to this game at all. Even the recent praise and Souls comparisons did little for me, mainly because I'm SO burnt out on that entire franchise at this point. But now actually seeing this in action this looks pretty alright. If nothing else, this seems like a waaay more interesting twist on the Souls formula than the trashpile of bad ideas that was Bloodborne. The fact that there is a proper block button is almost enough to sell me right there.

There's too much coming out soon to even consider buying it right now, but someday it will go on my to-do list.

I told myself I was gonna wait on this game after finishing the beta, then I kept watching videos and picked it up day one. No regrets.

Installing now, can't wait to dig into this.

But that fucking description makes me want to uninstall my GB membership.

I don't know if Sony put any money into it. But Team Ninja haven't released very many of their games on PC, and the fact that Nioh is a PS4 exclusive right now makes it seem even less likely to happen. Here's hoping I'm wrong though!

I like this video game but I think this white saviour shit sucks, even if it is faithful to the original material that it was based upon.

Jeez man, sure if you came to dark souls only for the art design Nioh is inferior in that regard. I think it does have some nice looking bits but it's not as original or consistent. If you have any interest in gameplay though, I'm sorry to say but Nioh is superior. It just has way more interesting and well thought out mechanics. Dark Souls gameplay was very novel and cool in the first game. By the third one it was kind of bland, repetitive and... dare I say it... easy.

So what is up with Brad in this quicklook? Jeff and Jason were over the moon for this game on the Bombcast but this QL is just bland and low energy.

Yeah! That's how it WORKS.

I'd say the dev being Japanese actually introduces an interesting wrinkle to this. You don't get a LOT of games out of Japan starring white dudes.

Doubt they do anything interesting with the concept, but it IS an interesting note.

This game looks pretty good though. I'm digging the fast paced gameplay and the loot system looks intriguing.

I've played through most of the first area and really enjoying it so far. If you don't constantly compare it to Dark Souls you'll see it's merits. There's a lot of unique ideas that play very well.

Given it is faithful to the original material, and that it's made by Japanese developers who have no issues casting a Japanese as the main lead of a franchise (Ninja Gaiden), I think it's rather silly to accuse them of being racist towards their own people.

I theorize they chose him so they could give him all those cool beards.

Should I try this, Let It Die, or Dark Souls 3 first?

got this game for a cool $47 at target yesterday and already have a sort of a love/hate thing with it. it was setting my teeth on edge earlier today, but right now i can't wait to get off work and go back to it. it kinda feels like the other souls games in that regard, but i'm hoping i don't entirely burn out on it after 30 hrs or so.

I really hate the ki recovery mechanic in this game. Why am I pressing R1 after every time I attack? It just feels so artificial and contrived.

@spoonman671: There's an upgrade very early in the weapon skill tree that makes your dodges double as Ki pulses. Since your natural instinct will be to dodge away after a combo anyway, it's excellent for easing yourself into the mechanic.

@gantrathor: I think Nioh was in development for PS3 originally (announced in 2005), so the fact that it's just released makes me think that Sony put money behind it.

I know these are weird times we are living in, but I think GB staff should state in notes of every PS4 video if it was captured on a Pro or not.
