Excited or this one!

Finished playing through this earlier, really good remake of the PS1 classic.

Might be debatable if it's worth the $20/£17 it costs though.

Edit: Oh, and Dan, there's a whole load of really cleverly hidden secret areas in Rupture Farms, don't feel bad about missing those 50 muds.

I might have to pick this up. I loved the origonal in the PS1

I didn't play the original or Exodus so I'm happy to shell out the $30 but I'll admit that it's a steep asking price when even something as expansive and polished as Transistor is available on the same platform at $20.

So $15 for season passes or Call of Duty mappacks are fine but $30 for a ground-up remade brilliant platformer isn't? Man, fuck gamers.

By the way, this game isn't small by any stretch or some indie toss-off. There is an AAA-budget put into this.

Okay, there seems to be some misinformation in this Quick Look.

- This game is not yet out on multiple platforms. For now it's only on PS4, but it's coming to PS3, Vita, Xbox One, Wii U, PC, MAC and LINUX at a later, yet unannounced date.

- This is not just another HD remake; this is Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee completely remade from the ground up. Basically everything is new: the engine, all the assets, the music, sound (all the voices were redubbed by Lorne Lanning), even the gameplay has been changed a lot by everything being sidescrolling now as opposed to the flip-screen of the original game, which means new proximity systems with regards to e.g. sleeping enemies and chant suppressors have been put into place. Also this game now has 299 Mudokons to save, whereas the original only had 99. All these changes and the time it's taken to implement them all explain the price of the game.

- You can chant to possess Sligs from the get-go, you just can't possess the Scrabs or Paramites in this game. You could in Exoddus.

- As for the handholding, it's really only in the beginning of the game. This game has a lot of systems in place that you can't expect everyone to just find out on their own. Once you're past the Monsaic Lines, you're pretty much on your own.

I have problem with this remake. Why can't you slap your fellow mudukons anymore? The original game there was a button called (angry) where you could slap mudukons. It was used because some mudukons would be exposed to laughing gas and act crazy you would need to slap them so they would act normal. Also it was a funny mechanic because slapping is always funny. But for some reason that slapping mechanic is removed so I'm not buying this game anymore. Also I am not buying this game because it's 30 dollars. Sorry I love these games but not much.

I agree with everything until the bolded part. I mean come on, they had the stone 'Get bellsong, come back and use on bells.' (which I don't think they needed in the first place as there's only two pathways to go, up or down) Then down a screen they have the fireflies, 'Get Bell Song, Use on Bells.' Like come on, it just clutters up the visuals too with all those fireflies around. Too much on screen, have it clean, that's the point of no UI, not to negate that by putting 'banners' in the background all over the place. I'm really hoping you can turn them off, way too distracting. 'Slog go boom' yeah okay, let me get to the next screen and figure that out for myself.

And the leap of faith twice? That's just bad design, 1) Don't have a leap of faith in your game or 2) If you do, make it so you don't have to literally spell it out to the player otherwise it hasn't worked. And then don't start the cut scene with him on the ledge and then falling down as he already jumped down in the gameplay.

Other than that I think it looks really nice and I'm glad to see it be a thing, loved these games on PS1, a staple of my childhood. I've just download Odyssey and Exodus to take with me on my Vita for upcoming plane journeys.

@othello: nope it is the original game, I have the original on steam and the angry mechanic is there.

I'm surprised by how much I love this game. Really crossing my fingers for Exodus, but I'm sure the price point will turn a bunch of people away.

I always loved these games but always ended up over-thinking the puzzles.

Well this looks delightfully weird.

It's $30 because they did a lot of work with the game. Everything was pretty much re done. Not to mention it is a full game.

I really want to like this more than I do, but the controls are really bad. D-pad movement, a run button and X as a small jump forward make so much more sense (Like the old games).

Dan wasn't kidding when he said he sucks at this game, he really does and it's entertaining as hell to watch.

Moods were definitely added in Exodus, I played both games to death when I was younger and the moods were introduced in Exodus where you could get your mudukons wet and they'd get angry... if someone died near them they'd get sad and if they sniffed laughing gas they'd go crazy. The Slap & Sorry commands came along with those new mechanics.

Also totally worth $30 considering how long the game is & the amount of work that has gone into it (its not a simple reskin, they've spent YEARS developing this game and want to raise enough to remake Exodus) but also I see this price point turning people away who werent fans of the game to begin with.

The first 2 oddworld games remain my favorite games ever (Exodus being my fav because it has better mechanics, has a far shallower learning curve and was funnier) but I am so happy they've made a product that lives up to the originals legacy and haven't simply done a square enix and made a lazy ass port of FF6.

Also, air-mines.

Useful tip: if a portal stays open when you stop chanting, you can jump in it yourself.

I rather enjoy @DanRyckert's child-like innocence. I think I've said before, everything seems new through his eyes, and that's quite refreshing.

Literally, the best use of the trackpad i've seen so far.

Yeah seriously, I'd much rather have someone be like "hell yeah! Let's do this!" and get it wrong, than have someone jaded.

This is a funny quicklook but I suspect they didn't change this too much and I actually 100% the original game on PC a few times so seeing him not know some of the mechanics is crazy.

At the same time I know the game doesn't explain things on purpose so... can't blame Dan for that.

I am looking forward to the PC release, but I can tell by this quick look they changed some things so I am wondering how drastic a change it is.

Edit: Small tip for Dan, or anyone that plays this, you can tell if a ledge goes down (that you cant see off screen if it goes down) if there are tiny pebbles dropping off of it.

Dan's becoming my new favourite Quick Look'er.

This actually seems like a pretty good remake; I am definitely glad you can quick save. Oddworld has always been one of my favourite game worlds; I wish there were more games with creative worlds like this.

This is probably because a $30 game isn't as significant a portion of a retail release's full price locally, being in Australia, but the $30 price point seems pretty reasonable to me considering how much polish this remake has received. It looks fantastic. Didn't have much hesitation paying the asking price, myself.

Wow, this game looks amazing. I played the original when I was a kid but I didn't know what I was doing so I can't wait to play this version.
