I recommend anyone who enjoys challenging puzzle games to play this or at least Riven. Riven has so many moments where you have to stop yourself and go "wow" becuse you realize how well designed the world is and how everything fits together (much more so than Myst). The closest modern game that has done that to me is probably Fez.
Can't wait for their kickstarter game :)

I remember when either DC:UK or N64 magazine always used to make fun of Myst and call it an interactive screensaver, and we would all laugh and laugh and laugh until we were dead.

Oh man Myst was the first game I ever really played as a kid. When I discovered what those switches do that are everywhere I literally was speechless for a day. So many little things in this game were so much fun to find out on your own, and extremely difficult.

@polygonslayer: You should probably warn people that they will have to take physical notes and shit, though.

People aren't really down with the notebook anymore, in general.

@gerrid: My memory of Nintendo mags in the UK is being butthurt that the Playstation 1 was successful. I specifically remember one time I was reading up on what games I could get for my new N64 and seeing Ocarina of Time. It claimed it was way better than FF7 because it wasn't turned based combat and it didn't have lame characters who just die halfway through like Aries. Strait up just spoiled that part of the story for everyone.

I liked myst, although to be honest my biggest problem with the game is that most of the problems aren't really puzzles. They're just conveyed to you in a really obtuse way to make it seem like a puzzle. Like for example what you saw in this quick look, getting the constellations didn't really take any puzzle solving. The tower just told you some dates and then you looked them up, you assume they are constellations so (I'll try not to spoil it) next you go try and find out which they are. And then it's pretty obvious what they're for.

As said, that's not really a puzzle, it's just giving you information in an overly complicated manner.

Also, I never really liked this game. It was pretty unique for its time though.

I actually tried playing Myst again a year or two ago. Even got out a notebook and started taking notes, but the game (from GOG I think) wasn't very stable on my computer so I gave up.

"Let's sit here and finish Myst!"

Yeah, you can actually do that in about two minutes if you know what to do.

Everything you do in the game is all aimed towards getting the info you need to solve a puzzle that's literally staring you in the face on the first screen. Which I always thought was kind of a neat idea.

I bought Myst in a GoG sale recently and pretty much did what these guys did. Booted it up, wandered around and hit some switches and interacted with things. Seeing this now though makes me want to just take a weekend and give it a go again, it's filling me with wonder.

Watching you guys turn on the marker switches then immediately turn them off again was somewhat difficult to take. I'm trying not to get mad at gameplay videos anymore cause that's a sad way to live, but I really, really wanted to yell some basic instructions at you guys.

When I was a kid, I played through this game on the Sega Saturn. Yeah.

@melodiousj:

OMG yes. Just throw the switch! Why would you turn it on and then back off to where it was when you start? What do you think is going to happen when you throw a switch...and then immediately turn it back off again?!

Argh!

I actually played through this on my 3DO when I was a kid lol...

I always wanted RealRiven. That game was awesome. Also I'll probably buy this on a better sale. It's tough to justify the purchase because most of the solutions are forever ingrained in my head. If I could somehow play it again for the first time...

I feel like the sequels are far superior. It's a shame Riven never seems to get the same attention that the original does. realRiven would be incredible.

That is unfortunate you never found the blue book page. That guy is nuts.

I won't spoil it but yes there are other locations not on the original island.

Myst was one of the first games I played (maybe the first, now that I think about it) with alternate endings. The blue book ending is my favorite.

The point of the imager room is to find the message Artus left for you. It's usually the first puzzle I solve in Myst. I also didn't find the imager room when I first played Myst. The way they have that room there it's not clear its a doorway so I didn't find it actually until I came back to the game when I was in college.

@dan_citi: Stop using buzzwords if you can't use them properly.

What separates great games like the Myst series from notgames tripe are two things:

1) Gameplay substance in the form of puzzles that present challenges for the player to overcome; starting with Riven, these puzzles have real significance in relation to the game world and to the backstory, a prime example being the classroom's number game in Riven.

2) Resolving the main conflict in every Myst game requires players to not only piece together the backstory through hints, cues, etc. in the game environment, but also to APPLY that understanding.

I will never forget the last time I played Myst. My first girlfriend and I were lying in bed in front of her shitty laptop that could barely run her father's copy. Must have been around 2001. I played Myst before that but never beat it.

The pre-rendered stuff from Riven still looks great, and other than the resolution, looks better than this realMyst: Masterpiece edition game. I also don't get why they don't do more around Riven, it was darker, more mysterious, looked WAY better and was an all around better game I think.

Myst is a game that requires some thinking and basic scribbling down of notes. I mean, damn. You have to at least try a little bit. They actually got the dates, entered them, and got the constellations...but then couldn't make the connection between constellations and pictures of animals. Which is of course what most constellations are.

Every year...we all get lazier of mind. Simple logical thinking has gone out the window...

The boxes with pictures in them correspond to the constellations you see in the planetarium. Which is how you raise the boat.

You guys were like a half step away from solving that one, at least.

Myst Revelation is an amazing game. On a scale going from Real-Game to Gone Home it's somewhere in between.
