People seem really mad about this game. Seems that those that care about fighting are super happy with the mechanics and those that want a more story focused mode heavy game are mad since those features currently don't exist.

Anyone who expects decent story from a fighting game is looking in the wrong genre.

P4U/P4U2 did a decent job, as a decent story in a fighting game isn't out of the question.

I think I'll skip this one. All the characters look like they drove to a garbage dump, made a color palette of the trash, and then skinned a bunch of thick thigh polygons with said trash palettes. Ugly game. Clunky systems. Dumb new characters. Dumb game.

...but it's utter garbage and will teach you nothing. I don't know why games like Skullgirls and Xrd can have such great tutorials, yet they release a new Street Fighter, the biggest fighting game franchise with the biggest casual audience, and they figured the only thing newcomers need to know is punch, kick, and jump.

I remember back in the Playstation days when fighting games came with minigames and fun extra modes. Now we're lucky if we get a decent number of characters.

Makes me want to bring out Rival Schools and Tekken 3.

I'm actually ok with the bad character only story art+story now that I think about this in the long run. The thing is, they're rolling out a new character every one character or two this year, so I'd rather have the characters available to play sooner than, say, have in-game or pre-rendered cutscenes for every character. That will slow down the rate at which they can churn them out and may have even raised the cost of each character that comes out if they have to put that much more time into it which, again, if I could just spend the minimal amount of my fight money with characters then that is ideal.

They could always expand on the cinematic experience for either bigger characters or character reveal that pushes the lore forward in a meaningful way.

Project Justice on the DC was awesome. Especially how you had to unlock characters by fulfilling certain criteria in a fight such as losing a round or winning without doing a certain move which would then play out in the story.

Frankly I'm surprised anyone acts like the servers were going to work on this in the first few days. Especially so after a beta period that was filled with issues. Its a bit silly.

Well the hope is that the Beta is broken because a beta is supposed to be broken so that the actual release is not.

@efesell: I don't think I've ever seen an online-centric game ever launch smoothly, servers will always mess up. Not like this is some unpopular fighter either, a shitload more people than were in the beta are going to be trying to play. If its still a problem in a week burn it all down, but right now it should be expected.

The way this game plays is fantastic. Given SF4 and Marvel, it's actually kind of shocking that Capcom came back and designed a fighter that's this all-around good. The server problems and lack of combo challenges are a bummer (and the lack of full story mode couldn't possibly matter less), but for people who have been thinking about getting into a fighter, this is probably the best place you could start.

Yes, it's low on features, but the base mechanics are both more balanced and more user-friendly than almost any real fighting game ever has been, and certainly the most user-friendly the Street Fighter series has been. There are a lot of steps taken in its design and philosophy to give players easy access to versatile character abilities and to avoid needlessly difficult execution (which was a huge issue with SF4 despite it being the modern revival of fighters). If you're entirely lost when it comes to fighters on a basic level, maybe wait until proper challenges or tutorials are added, but for people that have been looking for a jump-in point for fighting games, this is it.

The ps4 fighting games had quite a good story and great mechanics.

It is probably telling that Karin seems like the character I would have the most fun with.

@jeff@unastrike Regarding the lack of an instant-classic like "Indestructible" in SFV, there actually is a pretty rockin' official song called "Survivor" by Man With A Mission, as seen in this trailer. You may know them from their other recent anime banger, RAISE YOUR FLAG. Also, all the band members wear wolf masks. Unfortunately, it seems that the only remnant of "Survivor" in the full release of SFV is the instrumental section that plays on the main menu. Hopefully, one of these upcoming content updates adds a proper CG intro with full vocals.

Hopefully the online issues sort themselves out quickly so that early adopters can get the full experience like they paid for. I've been looking to purchase this on the PC, have been hesitant to buy it because of a lack of a training or challenge mode for the time being. The last time I've committed to playing a Street Fighter game for any length of time was when vanilla SF4 released. I'll probably come back and have another look at this game a month from now and see what they added before making a purchase because I really want to get back into Street Fighter and actually commit this time around.
