Woof, I know that "thinking more, doing less" experience from both trying to get better at Smash specifically and fighting games in general. I'm still working on the former, but I gave up on the latter before even messing around online. (A big part of that came from me also trying to learn to use a fight stick after having played fighting games with pads forever. It was like learning how to navigate a city while learning how to drive at the same time.)

Karin's character select screen's laugh sounds exactly like that lady from Money Puzzle Exchanger.

Fang reminds me of the Thin Man from X-COM.

And seeing how R. Mika plays, it makes me wanna play this game. She just picks up a dude, no matter how big he is and then she fuckin' smashes him into the ground. Something about that just pumps me up.

I think SF4 is easier to look at.. not sure what they were going for here. Also the female characters in this are ridiculous. I fully understand that sex sales, but come on.

Yah man what a bummer. I'm usually the last person to be bothered by this stuff, but SF4 had such great and varied female designs. SF5 is very one note, and that note is "tits and ass" which is a bummer. Some of the female designs definitely cross into that.. embarrassing to be seen playing as some of these characters situation. Cammy especially, what happened! Cammy was always very lithe and athletic.

Can someone explain to me why all the female characters have their asses and boobs hanging out? Do they get their powers from having them exposed to air?

@optimalpower: There are many sexually attractive characters in the world that are not embarrassing to everyone involved. Capcom should strive for something in that vein.

She has the stereotypical "Ojou-sama" laugh from pretty much every anime ever.

I love Jason now. He knows how to select the greatest thumbnails. Nothing screams SFV more than an overweight former wrestler who eats hot peppers and likes to throw people with chains. Also congratulations to Jeff!

Laura's character, for instance. Why must her breasts be hanging out? If they weren't, then I wouldn't feel dumb playing the game and my girl friends would feel better controlling her. And it's not like she wouldn't be a sexy design, she would still have the large breasts and form-fitting clothing! Bad-ass Brazillian kind of MMA fighter, that's awesome! Great!

Same frustration I felt with Quiet. She was easily the most interesting character in that game, but I, again, felt like Kojima thought I would be unable to enjoy controlling her unless she was wearing a thong and a bra. Hey dumbass, give me money!

Whenever my girlfriend saw me playing MGSV, I had to explain that this super elite soldier couldn't speak or wear clothes because of reasons. Urgh.

I feel like video game companies are leaving money on the table when they aim for the lowest common denominator in this way.

@waltercrunkfite: Basically, what you want are options that filter out seeing certain costumes. That's a valid point, and something developers need to implement in the future. In regards to Quiet, you could eventually change her costume to something less revealing, but it should have been available from the start.

You should also understand that your wants shouldn't come at the cost of others who like the costumes as the designers intended. But yes, developers should meet both audiences in the middle, with options, and not straight up cutting the content.

@shtinky: yeah, I changed Quiets outfit after 50 or so hours, and not long before she disappeared for good, I seem to remember.

I'd prefer it if you didn't tell me what I need to understand!

I don't understand how we are expected to trust Jason as a fighting game player when he isn't as good at fighting games as Dan Ryckert

Sexuality is the devil /s

Sexuality is perfectly fine in games. Bayonetta did it great, she was hyper sexual but it was all done intelligently. SF4 characters were sexual but also done in a way that wasn't reminiscent of a DeviantArt fanfic. SF5 falters in that it's sexual, but in a very crude way.

Opinion on this will vary of course. I always fight against people screaming about outfits and whatnot because ironically I'm all for sexuality in gaming. I thought the kerfuffle around Quiet in Phantom Pain was really dumb and had no issues with her at all - if anything I found it funny. For whatever reason though, the way SF5 just ballooned up all their breasts and butts in this really adolescent, fan-art sort of way bugs me. Maybe because I am a graphic artist myself so I know when you're growing up there is a phase when you draw all women like this but then you kind of grow out of it.

@waltercrunkfite: Shit, I didn't think the designs would make you, or anyone, react this way. I don't say you can't, it's just, it really isn't that big of a deal. At least for me.

I'm the same as you. As in being perfectly fine with sexuality in games. But if you put it this way, I think I see where you and others are coming from.

@grimluck343: you missed my point. You phrased it as if the character had selected her clothing, rather than a design team drawing them with little in mind but titillation.

"How dare she"!

No I fully understand what you're trying to say. You're upset that these video game characters have large breasts that aren't properly covered to your standards. How dare they.

No, I'm upset that me, my family and friends don't want to play a game we enjoy the mechanics of, because it seems dumb to us - the aesthetic appears to have been conceived with adolescent boys in mind. Just seems like they are leaving money on the table.
It's not a question of morality.

All is forgiven with this game once the servers were functioning last night. I didn't play any of the betas and I haven't played SFIV in years, but I've had 0 problems with lag online so far.

I wasn't being condescending at all. In other words, I was saying developers need to find a happy medium that satiates both audiences, without cutting content that people would want.

I said you need to understand that there are people that want the content that you find objectionable, and that not everyone has to suffer just for people of your disposition. But there needs to be a way to do this, which is why I proposed the idea of filter options.

Has any game with a massive influx of players day one performed well online? WoW (and all its expansions) were an absolute shitshow on day one. I want to say Halo 2 (or was it 3?) essentially shut down XBL on its first day. I'm not saying we can't expect better but history tells us this is the way it goes and it usually gets ironed out shortly thereafter.

You're not wrong but the way they've built the game requires their servers to be working 24/7 for you to get any rewards even if you're doing "single player" stuff.

I apologise if it sounded harsh. But yes, it's all subjective; you have the right to an opinion to not like it. But it would be wrong to demand developers to cut the content just to suit you, that would veer towards censorship. Instead, there needs to be options that are more inclusive of people in your situation.

No problem - I was probably being overly defensive. It's just a raw subject after seeing my friend and his kids so put-off today. I am vehemently anti-censorship! I don't think anything should be cut! It's just frustrating, is all.
I wish that more deliberately arousing outfits were not the norm, but available. Like, if Quiet's cool army uniform was what she wore on the reg, then the naked options were there for those that wanted them.
Anyways, thanks for being civil.

Disappointed they couldn't get Dan for this QL. He is, after all, the best SFV player in the office. (Not counting the drinking bird toy, who, with all due respect to its ability to also beat Jason, has no business driving a QL.)
