Quick Look: Strider

Man, this game looks boooooring. The "art style" couldn't be more generic, as well.

Looks OK, but the lack of New Game Plus is a deal-breaker.

This will be on a Steam sale soon enough so I'll pick it up then. This Quick Look actually cooled me on it a little. Still looking forward to trying it though.

Also thank you Based Jeff for not saying fucking Metroidvania and saying the game is like Metroid or SOTN. To hell with that awful term.

It's a mindless 90s arcady goodness with a shiny coat of paint. I'll enjoy it for what it is, rather than what it isn't.

So play this at a high difficulty maybe? I'm not sure. Might pick it up.

Played about an hour of this so far and all I have to say is that it's fucking awesome. Just a ton of fun to play, not to mention pretty nice to look at.

Yeah, I hate how modern mid-tier 2D games do that. The Flashback remake was another culprit. The original games had more unique aesthetics that were appropriately "grungy," while these new ones are just all sparkly and clean and dull.

Yup. Felt the same during the Flashback Quick Look. Super dull.

I hope that they still have the Jungle and Siberia style levels in this.

I can't imagine a Strider game without robot gorillas, amazon ladies and dinosaurs.

What's the lore here? Why are there signs and computer screens in Russian?

Definitely doesn't look as good or inspired as Shadow Complex, Muramasa, or Dust - but still worth playing. It's unfortunate Unreal/Chair never upgraded and put that game out on PC, people would have flocked to it, especially now.

What sucks is that this game doesn't have an end game or good replay value, I feel like these types of games need a shot in the arm in that department.

Like the look of it, have to check this out at some point.

Graphically this game looks incredibly bland. I really feel like they should've stylized this somehow like cel-shading.

Good lord, could you imagine what the PC mod community would do to that game? Wait, maybe don't. You'll just end up wanting it more :(

Strider 2 on PS1 was one of the favorite games of my youth despite it's own shortcomings. The greatest strength of that game was it's style and the pacing, constantly rendering though foes from one ridiculous setpiece to the next. None of that spirit seems present here....

The music is pretty jammin' I don't know if I want this on PC or 360 tho... whiteguyproblems.

Hmm.. nothing about this is grabbing me at all.

Strider 2 is more like the arcade game, whereas I THINK this is intended to play on the nostalgia of the NES version of Strider, i.e. more of an exploration/adventure then set pieces/linear/action. This appears to be more 'metroidvania' then hub world though, so I'm thinking this is the Dark Souls to the NES Strider's Demon's Souls.

There is an incongruency between Strider's run animation and the actual speed at which he is apparently moving. It looks too slow. Like he's running into a stiff headwind.

I dunno. This looks crappy. Rubbery animation and a lot of half-assery happening in the design. I mean compare this against Bionic Commando: Rearmed, for instance. This Strider has none of that care and dedication to making a really high quality game. Paint by numbers game. I would say cash grab but I don't think this will sell particularly well.

I wonder if Chair is disappointed about what they've let themselves become or if the piles of money they are rolling around in keep those feelings at bay.

I feel like that digital scarf thing is there partly because they thought it was too much of a hassle to make an actual scarf that behaves convincingly. And then they tried this and some guy thought it looked cool, so, digital scarf.

I love these kind of games and the this has a great visual style to it, but it looks ridiculously easy.

I thought Shadow Complex was no problem to breeze through, but this is taking it to another level.

If ya want the Trophie/Achievement for killing 20 enemies without dying, there is a spot a couple hours into the game where you have to turn off water valves I think. The helicopter enemies come up out of the vents non-stop, just stand there and wack 20 of 'em.

I have so many cool memories of the Strider arcade game...

Makes the game look hype as fuck.
