How in the hell do the people not named Dan at Giant Bomb not like Super Smash Bros.? What in the hell is wrong with them? Do they not like fun? Do they have no souls? Are they just plain insane? I just can't comprehend it. It makes no goddamn sense.

It is just completely fucking bizarre.

Edit: Just wanted to note that this is mostly a joking comment, in case that wasn't obvious - though I do indeed find it incredibly weird that Smash Bros. inspires a collective meh from most of the staff.

Sort of sad this isn't out for a week in Europe, for some reason.

I got this game yesterday, and I've been having a ton of fun with it! It's not often that I go out and buy a game without waiting for reviews, but I couldn't help myself.

There's one Xenoblade character, and one Xenoblade level. I get you with the Fire Emblem stuff, but lay off Xenoblade, Brad! ;)

This game makes me really happy to play it. I am not the best at it, but it's just flat-out fun in ways I haven't had playing games in a while. Easily the Game of the Year in my opinion, beats out all other Smash games except Melee, and even then, it's loaded with more content, looks better, sounds better, and plays very much better.

But, at the time, Melee meant a lot more than this did, so it gets the nod as the "best" of the Smash games.

I dunno dude, but it does suck. Even Dan "dared" give this a 4 star review. Not that I care, but it seems like it deserves more love from him, especially given that the site is basically anti-Smash.

I'm not really sure why the GB crew has to be so damn cynical at times. Super Smash Bros. is just fucking fun as hell when hanging out with a bunch of friends. Even if you're not into the high level tournament stuff, I can't think of many better party games, though the indies really stepped up in recent years with Nidhogg, Towerfall, etc.

I'm definitely picking this one up. And I can already tell that Little Mac and Mega Man (already played Mega Man in the 3DS demo) will become part of my main roster. I think I can get into the singleplayer stuff in this game much more than the terrible Subspace Emissary as well. I freaking loved the events and just collecting trophies in Melee.

Edit: There's a lot of Xenoblade in this? Isn't Shulk the only one? Also, that game is one of the best JRPGs ever made, it deserves it.

I can't speak for the GB office, but I haven't liked any Smash Bros (or Smash Bros-esque) games previous to this one, (and I haven't played this one). It's fun for random college era party-games, but for me, it doesn't have much staying power once you've played all the characters or seen all the stages.

The camera's whiplash-inducing, it's hard to keep track of your character when the action is hot and heavy, and it ultimately boils down to "mash the button better than the other guys/girls and hope you get lucky".

Yeah, pretty strange that if Dan wasn't there no one in the office would be interested in one of Nintendo's biggest titles.

That said, this game fucking rocks.

Thankfully Dan is a breath of fresh air to this site's opinions on the Gamecube and N64.

I'm no expert at SSB, but from my days in college drunkenly playing SSB in dorm lounges, there is no high level play going on in this QL. Cool to see that this is a good game, but I'll probably stick to Project M.

Also the lack of Snake is a no buy for me.

Well, I don't really think Vinny or Patrick are big fans of Smash either, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Both Brad and Jeff have explained that they don't have much nostalgia for the franchise (neither of them really grew up with those games like I'm sure a lot of the people who absolutely love them did), and they're not huge fans of how they play. It's not like they hate the franchise, but they don't like it that much either. It seems to me that they're not big fans of how the games play, and what could draw them in is Nintendo going all in on the fanservice (a bigger crossover single player mode or something like that, like I think Brawl had to some degree?).

I'm not a big fan of Smash because I never really had friends who were fans of the franchise growing up, so I didn't get the multiplayer experience a lot of other people did. So I have no feelings for the franchise either way, really.

Did you play for 30 hours Dan? Cause it kinda seemed like your friends and co-workers carried you and kept playing while you complained, intentionally died to not play/be on your phone, and took naps.

P.S. I am really just bullshitting, everything you did was within the scope of the Guinness rules.

Go back and watch the 3DS quick look of Smash Bros. Jeff and Brad had said they came from a time where they moved on from local multiplayer games and found more appeal in playing online multiplayer games on the PC. Also, Jeff has said that he wishes that Smash Bros plays more like a traditional fighter than how it is today, so that might help you understand why they don't care for the Smash series.

That said, I'm pumped to play the new Smash Bros!

I dunno, I think it's a bit much to expect too much out of amiibo right out of the gate. It's gonna build up over time, long-term.

Aside from that, excellent quick look. I felt pretty lukewarm with the developing hype of this game, but it looks like it's as fantastic a party game as the older ones were. And for the website's cynical sake toward this franchise, thank God for Dan Ryckert.

Where can i go to read impressions from someone who knows their shit? I just want a simple summary of how the game feels compared to previous games, i cant find it.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to play this game so to each their own.

The amibos seem way too easy to cheese. When I first made my character and was testing it out, I put it in a 2 minute match against a couple Lvl 1 CPs just to see what happens. My amibo went from Level 1 to 5. Then I set up a 20 minute match against a some Lvl 3 CPs. and went in the shower. Came back and BOOM Level 20. "Okay, welp. Its time for work!" Stock 99. Went to work and came back to a Level 42!

Man I loved the first two games so much. Melee is probably one of my top games of all time. But Brawl didn't really do it for me, and this seems like more down the Brawl path.

And I would like to say that the combat has always been deeper than non-SSB fans think it is. Its was perfectly legit to do 1v1 no items, Final Destination. But of course max players, all items are way more fun.

Dan you should check out Yum Yum Sushi on Irving and 23rd. Absolutely spectacular sushi. I've also heard Chin's Sushi Bar is pretty good too. But Yum Yum is more down to earth, not SF bourgeois in the slightest.

I'm pretty sure that Shulk is just a portmanteau for "Sulky little Shit."

I wonder when some crazy Tumblr person will start complaining over the fact that the Master Hand is the right hand and Crazy Hand is the left hand, claiming that Nintendo is instigating some kind of problematic hand-racism and that they are getting triggered that most game characters are right handed and that modern controllers doesn't accommodate for other-hand-enabled people.

You may think that sounds stupid, but give it a few months and I bet it'll be the next thing the internet will have hurt feelings over :D

The only times it was ever a tangible issue for me was in Dylan's Rolling Western and Liberation Maiden, both for the 3DS, which didn't have left-handed control options and were pretty much unplayable for me. It was disappointing, but I kinda didn't care, but some people were very offended that I'd suggest that lefties consider skipping those games on account of the controls. Not for moral reasons, but because there's no point buying a game you won't be able to play.

I guess what I'm saying is, yes, it sounds incredibly stupid, and no, I won't be the slightest bit surprised when it becomes an actual controversy that Polygon.com takes very seriously.

ONE Xenoblade character and XB is one of the best RPGs ever made. MANY people were happy Shulk was is in it. Many people are happy more FE.Why does every time a Nintendo game is looked at they need to be so cynical and bash the company and act like they are to cool to play this game.
