I never made it past the first level either, as a kid. Only recently played through a few of the levels in the game before I got kind of burned out. Never had a problem with the sentry bot. I stealthed my way through. I think where I got stuck as a kid was at the entry to the statue itself.

Best game ever.  Even with it's "flaws".  Dude, I remember replaying the starting level over and over again just to see how many ways I could beat it.  It was awesome.   Edit:  Oh god, I have to reinstall this game right now. 

I'm with you Brad, I burned out on that first statue of Liberty level and then went back to playing Jedi Knight.

Just cant get into it, god knows i've tried. This goes into the final fantasy 7 category of games i just had to play at the time to enjoy.

New Deus Ex. New Hitman. Give me a new Thief and a Tenchu that doesn't suck and I will be the world's first satisfied gamer.

That's a funny song, but I have to disagree about swimming. IMO it's worth it to at least get one upgrade in swimming (It's only 675 skill points). It's enough to get all the goodies in the flooded tunnels in Hong Kong without even needing a rebreather.

Currently playing Deus Ex for the first time ever, with some mods. Like it a lot.

This should be either interesting or very painful. Perhaps both.

I also highly recommend using the Shifter mod if you're planning on playing through this again (or for the first time).

Brad's totally right that Ellis Island is the filter. Tried it many times, and looking back now it felt way different from the rest of the game (even though it really wasn't)

so dark.  And yes, it saves the notes, but doesn't pop them up when you 'need' them.  Which is cool.

What a shame.

Heh, it's always hard when I watch people play a game like Deus Ex because they don't do it the way I do it and I have to suppress the urge the berate them for doing it wrong. Gah. Fun QL though, it's a shame that that first level puts people off because there is so much more in the game and it gets so much better.

Not taking ANY weapon skills is a really bad idea.

You guys who didn't make it through the first one or two levels really missed out.

A real live classic. Makes me smile. I am pretty hyped for the new one and Skyrim, if anything else this year. If you have a gaming PC and don't mind fishing for a few of the right mods(like New Vision and Shifter), I strongly recommend it. 

Now I need to re-install it. way to go guys >_>

I highly recommend that fans of this game read Erik Wolpaw's walkthru if they have not already done so.

The first level isn't that good at getting you into the game. I wouldn't go in expecting a shooter since the shooting in this game is not very good. The graphics are also pretty bad. Its a pretty great game though.

Hey, Ion Storm also made Thief 3, that was a pretty damn good game.

Its a great game, one of my longtime faves, but OMFG, the voice over of Asian characters is atrocious in many cases.

I'll have to watch this QL when I wake up. Also 'improved' graphics more or less make it look like it does in my mind through the nostalgia filter.

High anticipation for DE:HR.

I really, really, really don't like this game.

The first time I ever played it I got stuck on the first level, too. I couldn't find the way up to the boss guy. On every subsequent playthrough I totally loved it, though. One of my favorite games of all time.

I really, really, really don't like this game.

I love this game, yeah, but I really love the second game too. I don't know why so many hate on the Invisible War. It got great reviews when it came out. It seems like it's one of those games people only hate retrospect.

Every time I play this on steam, my saves don't seem to work.

The game was actually released in the summer of 2000, which to me only makes it more remarkable. I finished it for the first time last week and loved it. It's not perfect, but the way it demands patience and exploration feels like something that's been bred out of games. I hope Human Revolution makes good on its promise to take the original's strengths to heart.
