@ArtisanBreads: More than that really, there are a whole bunch of movement options that you can do that let you do all kinds of crazy slide/jump melee attacks. The melee in this game is miles ahead of what Jeff showed in this quick look.

I have no problem with F2P only because the other option is subscription MMO.

Yeah I slide around and do the jump out about every 30 seconds. So fun.

Also, Patrick says this is so limited.

Turns out this is just like Mass Effect or lots of other games that people play a ton. There isn't much besides shooting to any third person shooter.

I love that this isn't a cover shooter. Why would it be one? That would kill the mobility.

Anyways, people should check it out. It's also way better with co-op so check that.

So, it's Mass Effect's multiplayer gone F2P.

Or single price MMO w/ optional money market ala The Secret World and Guild Wars 2.

Nice art style, looks like a solid 3rd person shooter, could be promising.

Yeah, got to agree with you on the art direction. Really digging it. I'm a sucker for anything that has teal-glows in it.

But as for its gameplay? While this is still in beta, I really hope the devs make combat more meatier and feel satisfactory. Make each shots and each melee feel connected with each hit at the enemy. I think a good example and to start emulating with is GoW2.

GL with the game, Digital Extremes!

If anyone is wondering, the maps do appear to be randomly generated. In the first mission I played, the ship I was on was covered in ice, which dropped my shield capacity down by 50%. I just played through the same mission again and there was no ice, and the layout was completely different. So... yeah. Randomly generated.

I'm sorry if someone already answered this question.

My current problems with F2P multiplayer games is that when pay to win went out of style most everyone making these games ditched purchasing weapons with real money too. Now, pay to win is a terrible way to run a game, but replacing that with extremely long grind sessions between significant unlocks isn't much better. I may be completely off base here, but it seems like most modern F2P games are so afraid of the pay to win label that they only offer cosmetic and single use items in their cash shop. I would be much happier if F2P games gave me the option of paying $5 or $10 to get some good weapons and mods immediately but kept the high tier weapons as progressions unlocks. I hate slogging through hours and hours of grinding shit guns and that seems to be the current F2P model. Maybe this is how most F2P games work now and I am just not paying attention, but I would not mind paying a few dollars and being boosted to level 10 out of 50 total levels.

I actually really like the look of the enemy robot design. Reminds me of all those 80s sci-fi artists I grew up adoring, like Jim Burns, Chris Moore et al.

I'm 17 and these games all fucking suck. I grew up with free to play games and I have never found them good or interesting. I would never pay any amount of money for anything that free to play games offer.

Well, it's an interesting concept. A TPS that never ends? With Co-Op? Interesting. It will, however, depend on how many different sorts of levels, objectives and enemy types they put into the game. This is only a Beta, I understand that, but I would like to see more.

Then again.... It will be free to play, so I suppose I could just give this a shot myself and see how it turns out. The art and graphical design looks good enough.

Man is this game boring, like 3rd person diablo without the fun environments or dynamic spawns or cool abilities. =P Art direction is cool though, glad these guys finally got to make something out of that original tech demo.

I understand Patrick's criticism of the free-to-play model, but these games clearly aren't targeted at people who have disposable income or for early adopters. They're for teens, broke students, cheap people. They're just not aimed at dudes like him.

Free-to-play games also act as that foot in the door. More often than not, there's a $50 premium pack that impatient people will go for once the game has got its hooks in.

@Huey2k2: In general, what people tend to dislike in free to play games is the microtransaction stuff.

Personally I don't like F2P because it tends to be a shallow experience.

So to get reductive:

Combat from Space Marine + Mass Effect 3 multiplayer + visuals from Dark Sector (in space!) = Warframe

Seems like a decent F2P game. It's stuff like this I wish existed back when I was a poor college student shopping the bargain bin for PSone games. Also, the F2P model reminds me of Dead Trigger on Android, which I've found to be one of the fairest micro transaction models around.

@allodude: As a student with little money I can still buy games. I may have to wait a while for new ones to go cheap, get old games or wait for deals on steam but it isn't impossible. Plus if spending a bit of money leads to a better over all game I'd prefer to spend

These F2P games are actually designed to rake in the most cash for least effort. Sure you got your broke guys and girls playing them for endless hours, but then you got one guy who spend so much money on it, that he could buy about 20 regular $50 copies in a store, and that's where they make tons of profit.

Just the other day I was playing some MechWarrior Online, and in about 10 games I saw about 6 people who bought the "only real cash" Mech, which cots about $15.

Nope, those games are not made for broken people, those games are made to milk the customer more as a cinema ticket.

Which is weird because didn't he write a piece recently about how he didn't have time to do his actual job (you know... news and stuff) because he was in so many quicklooks etc.? The implication there was that things were going to change and we were going to get more news and fewer occasions of Patrick being in every piece of content ever. And immediately after saying that he's in every single quicklook so far this year.

I think it's a combination of the two. When I was a teenager a lot of my friends had no money and impulsively spent every dollar they had as soon as they got it. There was a friend of mine whose car ran out of gas on his way home because he spent the $5 that his mom gave him for gas that morning (about 3 gallons at the time) on a snack instead of waiting 20 minutes until he got home to his parents' fully stocked fridge. I bet people like that get sucked in by the word free and end up spending a lot.

I think there are quite a few people who try the free to play games and if they enjoy it they buy something for a price point they think would be fair for the game as a "this is a game I would've been willing to pay for" kind of gesture. Probably nowhere near a majority even of the paying players, but certainly a few, and MechWarrior certainly seems like a game that could evoke that feeling, given the history of that franchise and how few games there have been in that genre in the last decade.

I generally go for the subscription option in F2P MMO's for that reason (especially SOE's stuff, as they have the All Access thing that covers both PlanetSide 2 and the Everquest series for one fee that's just slightly above the per-game fee), and rarely use the premium currency stipend paying subscribers get.

I looked through a bunch of the comments and none of them mentioned that Jeff didn't use any of the warframe-based powers that he was collecting energy for, which is kind of a large selling point in the game. He didn't run or use any acrobatic moves either but those aren't big deals.

He and Patrick managed to be spot-on IMO in how the game lacks any incentive to play other than choosing which items you want to grind forever for and/or pay for.
