Abby's "little video description text" (is there a name for that?) game is on point so far.

I really wish they'd stop doing a Ridge Racer as it seems like the quickest way to diminish a franchise, but I'm still happy to see it.

Actually the PSP and Vita launches were really solid. Both had WipEouts and Lumines.

Zone mode is basically an endurance race where your vehicle gets progressively faster the longer you're playing. You can't control the acceleration and you can't brake, but you can air-brake for sharper turns and side-shunts. In the PS3 version you could also set up custom song playlists and turn them on during races which would turn the tracks into visualizers. Its a super great game mode to chill out to and I really dig the "get the highest score" vibe it has.

Not blisteringly fast, eh? Y'all are forgetting about the higher difficulties, which would be the equivalent of 5000cc in Mario Kart.

I'll probably pick this up at some point. I've not played Wipeout in many years.

That said, I would rather see a new Blur. Yeah I know, Bizarre Creation is not around anymore, and Activision probably wont do anything with that license.

Looks interesting though on the earlier mention of Hydro Thunder from Dan, while this seems to have more speed, for an arcade racer the Hydro Thunder series was enjoyable. Alex should try out the Xbox 360 version they did as it holds up rather well.

There were three Wipeouts on the PS1, but only one Wipeout on the PS2 and it wasn't great. It set the franchise back until Pure came out with the PSP and was very good.

In Zone mode you can't brake, keeps getting faster until you die. Wait till you get over 100 to see some speed.

Zone battle is the other mode, you build up meter by going over boost pads, then Zone boost to increase your Zone level. First to the targeted Zone wins.

Firing your Zone boost also causes a barrier to appear which drops your Zone level if you hit it.

@loktarogar: I got the feeling Dan and Alex were using the term "*blistering* fast" as a negative - they were suggesting that the Wipeout series had a good sense of whipping along the track witbout being an uncontrollable twitch-fest.

Dammit, I'll definitely have to pick this up. The electro-drum-and-bass soundtrack and Cyberpunk-racer aesthetic is triggering fond memories deep within my early 2000's self.

I bought this collection even though it doesn't include the game I want to see remastered most of all; in my opinion, WipEout 3 is the pinnacle of the series.

Have people gone back to F-Zero? It's not as fast as wipeout unless you're playing wipeout on the lowest speed (which Alex is here) and are doing speed exploits in f-zero (snaking etc).

There's also proper physics so you really have to be in control of the vehicle in wipeout games.

TBH, comparing f-zero to wipeout is like comparing Doom II to Quake Champions. They have kind of a similar aesthetic and you shoot in both, that's about it.

Also the Vita and PSP launches were really good. Vita probably had the best lineup of launch games for systems in a long while, Dan doesn't know what he's talking about there.

@two_socks: Yeah zone mode was one of my favourites, particularly on the zone specific tracks.

@alex I'm pretty sure in normal zone mode, each zone lasts 10 seconds and you get health for perfect zones (no crashes). At least in HD, Zone 20 (Phantom) is the fastest speed you can select for normal races and there's a trophy for reaching Zone 75 (as well as another for reaching 50 using only airbrakes).

The weirder mode is called zone battle (I think it was added in Fury). You build up charge from hitting boost pads which can be used to either increase your zone (and drop a wall) or to get a shield for a few seconds. First person to reach a set zone wins. I found that it mainly boiled down to hitting pads until your energy was full, then boosting and repeating the process.

I remember Wipeout Fusion on PS2 had a departure from the normal graphical style didn't it. I think the tracks were more gritty, with 'off road' sections?

Either way it wasn't very good.

Is it bad that when I saw the name "Wipeout" in the upcoming box, that I hoped for another game based off of the game show? Those quicklooks were the best!

I've probably played 2048 and HD/Fury for about 200 hours and while it's great they've made them have more resolution and possibly HDR, I'm so done with those games.

Still, maybe if enough people buy this, Sony will do the right thing and put the guys back together and make a proper new WipEout. I'd get a Pro for that.

This is the first video on the site with JUST Alex and Dan, with no other parties! GBE Quick Looks have always been Vinny and Alex; Vinny and Dan; or Vinny, Dan, and Alex. The other exception was the Abby and Alex QL, and two quick looks with just Austin and Alex . I don't know if it was an intentional thing that it took this long, but I'm happy to see these kind of changes!

How the hell dont they understand zones, asking if there is brakes is dumb. You go as fast as you can and last as long as you can. Cant dan see with the parts the colors change when it gets faster ugh

@loktarogar: Oh, thanks for posting this...

In my mind I remember the PS3 versions looking closer to the PS4 version so nice to see them (even with the youtube compression) again and really noticing the graphical upgrade in the PS4 port.

Zone mode in Wipeout HD/Fury is sooo good, once you start to speed up a bit it can really put you into a Zen state where you treat the track almost as a rhythm game and start taking turns on based on timing rather than reaction.

In case Dan didn't already read it somewhere, the things what you fly around in are called ships, and they do have pilots. In Fusion on the PS2 they actually came up with names, faces and back stories for the pilots.

There are a lot of F-Zero alternatives, but they all feel compelled to add some weird gimmick on top of the hover racing. It's weird weapons, or collection colored orbs for speed, or swapping between driving modes, but F-Zero was just about going as fast as you could without smearing yourself on the side of the rails (or just flying off course) with a LOT more speed than this game seems to have and nothing more than a boosting meter.

It's the best time to play speedy futuristic anti-gravity race games it seems with this just releasing and Redout releasing more DLC. Now to go hunt down the soundtracks of these games.

Wipeout 2097/XL is still one of my favorite games of all time.

Former employees of Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool have made Formula Fusion which is a completely new hover racer game. It came out of Early Access, like, a week ago and it's not bad! Only on PC for now but console releases are planned.

2048s Intro is one of my favorite bits of CG cut to music, just a great progression to it. I'd also play one of those near-future styled racers.

I'm a little disappointed they didn't standardize the UI between the HD/Fury and 2048 tracks. I know it's the UIs used in their original games, but it really bugs me :x

Otherwise, this looks and sounds great. I might pick this up down the line

Ah, I watched it on mobile so didn't notice that it was off-screen footage... thought the blur was simply compression.

Have gone and watched some direct captured footage now and while it's better than the videos you posted I felt the PS4 version was a bigger step up compared to I initially had thought based on my memory.

Digital Foundry did a video comparing this version to the ps3 and Vita games. The developers have done a lot of work on this visually, much, much more than just an up-res. It's a really great package, almost feels like a new game to me with the graphical polish and rock solid 60fps, even though I had 2048 and the dlc on Vita.

Zone mode has your ship relentlessly increase speed and tasks you with surviving as long as possible. The Zone numbers themselves mark 10-second intervals that you survive through. Every perfect zone (where you don't take any damage) replenishes your health by 10.

Speed pads in Zone don't increase your normal speed, but you do get some extra points towards your score for running over them (as more speed = more difficulty).

Zone for me is THE Wipeout mode. Racing and time trials are fun and all, but they simply don't compare to the purity of going faster and faster until you can't cope. No weapons, no squeezing in barrel rolls, no racing lines. Just you vs the track until you tap out.

Alex, are you saying vive instead of vibe?

I only notice because i just listened to beastcast podcast 107 - i thought Alex said "it has a good vive" instead of vibe. I wasn't 100% sure thats what you said in beastcast, but it sounds like you said it here too at 2:08 - "style and vive"? I really think you mean vibe. Maybe not...

*edit* not picking, i actually went and had to look that I was using it correctly, so just trying to clarify and help out (looking it up i think its vibe).

Kinda sad they went with the 2048 look for zone instead of the hd era look, that said if buying this will show my support for wipeout I will totally buy it. (also it's kinda weird that 2/3'rds of this is a remake of wipeout hd which is a remake of wipeout pure/pulse).
