Ranking of Fighters 0011: Martial Masters & Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition

Very excited to see some Martial Masters play. It's a shame that the game never got a commercial release outside of arcades.

Martial Masters is my favorite of the grumpy old men

I would listen to an "All Systems Goku" style show where two members of the GB staff watch all 145 episodes of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. It'd be like ASG except instead of them being pleasantly surprised about how good it is, it's just them groaning about how horrendously bad it is, and how it somehow finds ways to get progressively worse as it goes on.

Hopefully they check out Gundam W Endless Duel which the Power Rangers game was based off of. I feel it's straight up the best fighting game on SNES.

I sure wish I were a respected Scientist of the Fighting Game persuasion, so that Qanba would send me some sticks... ?

Martial Masters looks extremely good and fun.

@derachi: They should watch Operation Overdrive or Mystic Force to see how truly awful Power Rangers can get.

Is that true? They're pretty different, mechanically, as I remember it. Both games are totally awesome, regardless. Also, I absolutely love Fighting Edition's rendition of the Power Rangers theme. If you're not playing on the Data Zone, then you dun fucked up.

Anyway, I continue to enjoy that this feature focuses on obscure fighting games rather than the obvious ones.

Ivan Ooze is the ultimate fighter.

A far improved and better "version" of that Power Rangers is actually by far and away, Gundam Wing Endless Duel, which is based on a similar version of that fighting game engine by Natsume (even some of the sound effects are the same). There's a lot of differences to the game mechanics that actually make it a lot deeper though, with every character having a dash+air dash, a super jump, and a basic projectile attack (that can be done in the air or as anti-air).

It would be great if they gave it a try sometime!

The characters and stages in Martial Masters are gorgeous. There's something so lively and flowing about the way it looks, just watching it makes me want to play it.

Seems like Gundam Battle Assault 2 was made by the same people as whatever this power rangers thing is. Looks/sounds similar.

They should play that because Gundams are rad.

The characters of Martial Masters are all based off various HK movies. Scorpion for instance is based on Kim Won-Jun's amazing performance in Operation Scorpio (aka. the Scorpion King).

Big recommendation on that movie from me. It's very entertaining, well-paced and has fantastic martial arts in it as well.

@mebizzle: I remember playing that game. The story mode was a side scroller, with an eventual megazord fighting. But i dont remember having a VS mode, does it?

There is actually no Japanese version of MMPR The Fighting Edition! This game was made by Natsume directly for the American (and European) market, hence why all the characters are from the localized version of the show. As noted above, Endless Duel is another good SNES fighting game by Natsume, but with them Gundam robots.

@derachi: Theres a very funny pair of guys from Australia who are doing just that, its a podcast called "Ranger Danger"

Watching along is rough, but if you just listen they do summaries of each episode. They are very funny, and have a rotating cast of their friends who come in and watch along. Its super good.

If only Jetman had been translated to Power Ranger, there might have been a true Cup Noodle fighter

Gundam Wing Endless Duel is definitely good, but if they're going to check out a Gundam fighting game, Gundam Battle Assault 2 is the top of the class.

Martial Masters continues the tradition of cool martial arts video game names getting translated to generic form.

A rough translation of the original name, 形意拳, would be "Fist of Form and Will".

The other example that comes to mind is the beat-em up Kung Fu Strike, which has a Chinese name closer to "Whirlwind".

@seikenfreak: I had that game back in the day! It's actually pretty simplistic, but I remember being impressed with the graphics at the time. All the different robots had destructible armor, kinda like the clothing damage in Soul Calibur.

It's so wierd that Lipsyncher and Silverhorns were the monsters picked for that PR game. i'd love to be at the meeting that made that decision.

As someone who is on the task of rewatching all 800+ episodes of ALL Power Rangers, let me tell you that a lot of early power rangers is very hard to watch unless you have the nostalgia or are already a fan of Tokusatsu. 100 episodes of them hating something would get old and not be fun. Maybe them dipping into a select few of the better episodes to get a feel for it.

But as big a fan of the show that I am, i'd never wish to inflict it on someone who wasn't into it.
