Ooof. The facial hair textures look real bad.

Skyrim was bad. Oblivion was bad. Bethesda makes bad games!

And the worst part is they could make good games if they hired someone who knew what good combat was! The combat doesn't have to be bad (which is the main thing that makes Bethesda games bad since you do it non-stop) but the games get endless praise so they never have any incentive to improve!

Can we talk about how HAWKEN is one of Jeff's most recently played PS4 games?

@xbob42: I've never understood this argument against the games. The combat is perfect for what the ES games are trying to set up for the player. A more sophisticated combat system would require reducing so much about the world which is what people love about those games. Really, if that is your basis for a bad game then every Zelda game is a bad game, and so many other beloved games/series.

I remember the original QL with Ryan playing and oh boy did it run and look like garbage on an XB360. PC was definitely the way to play it back then. This looks a lot better on the modern consoles. Too bad they went Epic exclusive for PC. I got it on Steam and would have loved a free upgrade. Oh well, Saints Row 2 is better anyway. That should get a remaster.

So slow floaty garbage combat where enemies don't react to hits and everything feels like mushy nonsense is integral to the design?

Yeah, no. Not buying it. Dragon's Dogma had fantastic combat. You bolt that into Skyrim and you've got a game of the generation. And much like Skyrim, Dragon's Dogma's awful world was not integral to the experience, it simply wasn't the focus. So you've got two games that are decent on their own, but would be incredible if combined, and nothing is preventing that combination except one dev doesn't know how to build a world and the other doesn't know how to build a combat system.

The Zelda argument is hilarious, because Zelda has simple combat, not bad. It's not great, but at least when I hit an enemy they react, and go down in a reasonable amount of time, and don't (generally) require me to pause the entire game multiple times to do different things. That said, Zelda could also use better combat. The simplicity of thwack-thwack-thwack with some enemies being weak to certain items is fine but there's no reason it couldn't be better.

Nice, Rayman: Origins is due for a remaster.

(But yeah, Saints Row 3 was the rightful choice)

I cannot get into these new faces, they somehow look better and worse at the same time. And the lip syncing looks way off.

@xbob42: Skyrim is not a reflex shooter, that’s the exact opposite of the way the game is intended to be played. It’s basically a first person CRPG. You don’t need to be good at games to be successful in Skyrim. You level up your weapons skills so they do more damage. That’s it. The act of swinging them is largely superfluous. You don’t have to be good at swinging it, you have to be good at leveling it. That’s the style of RPG it is. They want you to have to level up your skills, not just be able to run out and kill anything on day one because you have good hand-eye coordination. If it’s not for you, that’s cool, the game isn’t for you, but the game series doesn’t need to change to suit your play style. There are plenty of games that require the player to be skilled to succeed.

Saints Row The 3rd was easily the best game of 2011. Skyrim was a good game in many ways, but not as fun. GB picking Skyrim was a political move. One that is still shameful till this day.

I kind of wish I watched this before watching the Digital Foundry video on it. I wonder if I would have had the same reaction as Jeff about how it looks. It seems like a pretty good example of looking like I remember it rather than what it actually looked like.

I think it's clear jeff isnt playing the playstation much these days considering one of the most boring games of 2019 is still in that list I really doubt he playing outer wilds.

Also, Skyrim is a fine game but it also is kind of the biggest, worst example of fetch quests. It got to a point in that game where I really didn't even know why I was playing it, because the writing is just okay at its best, the mechanics are serviceable but nothing special, and the entire game basically points you in the direction of what you should do next or where you need to go next.

Having said that, the Daedric artifact quests were quite inspired and well done and I wish more of the game had stuff like that.

While I so want a Jeff & Brad playthrough or a Vinny & Brad... I think what I would really want would be a Jan & Jeff.

Also, I just can't imagine playing through SR3 with a controller.

This game is the prime example of DLC content ruining experience - not just this remaster, but the Full Package release from 2012 as well. I made the mistake of buying that version instead of the original release, and having access to the most powerful vehicles and weapons from the very beginning of the game really deflated the experience. (for example getting the VTOL was supposed to be a big story moment and a big power trip, but I was like "oh... but I've already been using this thing for the past 10 hours.")

Digital foundry did a piece on this today. Apparently the frame rate is so much better on the Xbox one. Hope they can make a patch for the PS4 so it works just as well.

I think that's just Jeff's video. I was playing the remaster earlier and didn't notice any audio sync issues.

They did CheapyD dirty in this remaster. The people working on this must have not known he was based on a real person or something, because they changed his appearance, and he now looks completely different in the game (and nothing like the real person).

It would make sense if they wanted to avoid potential likeness disputes and whatnot, but they didn't change the name, which is weird.

PC's the way to go again with this but at least One X almost gets there. Glad to have gotten this for $30 from Epic Store.

Jeff, baby - making me queasy at the 52 minute mark.

I had more excitement for this game than a lot of people would read and post about it every day.

It was such a good game, until you start unlocking shit like "invulnernable to bullet damage" and you become a walking cheat code. Also there is like never a reason to drive despite cars being one of the best reasons to play these type of games since you almost never have super powers or a helicopter etc.

I wish they would let you ramp up a lot slower in these games and experience the joy of running a gang like previous saints row games instead of just becoming the toxic avenger right out the gate.

I remember the original being a bit more stylized and cartoony than this? It was a major reason why I preferred the look of 3 over 2. Don't remember the clothes or facial hair looking like they were painted on either!

I have no clue what they were going for with this remaster. This looks worse than what I remember on the 360 and the game didn't look good back then. Real shame because I love this one and would've considered picking it up.

just give us Saints Row 2 since that game is near impossible to get easy to play on a current gen PC (at least 5 years ago you would have to drive a certain distance in a car and time how long it took and run a program to bottle neck your CPU a certain % to make the game playable at a non insanely high frame rate) and if you wanna talk about a game that needs a face lift? Hoo boy.

Right off the bat they already fucked up this remaster. I mean, sure, it's a tough call on whether to just polish the graphics or to add extra stuff, whether to simply upscale to 4K or to release a 'director's cut' with new footage, but...how the fuck do you not not get Keith David to read that opening text crawl? That should've been some Mako at the beginning of Conan the Barbarian "let me tell you of the days of high adventure" shit.

This was a fun game when it originally came out, but I can't imagine anyone wanting to go back to it. Like Crackdown, this is definitely a time and place kind of game.

Amazing game. I just wish they did even more work on it (Fixing bugs, even better graphics etc). If you are going to buy this, dont get the ps4 version. It runs so much better on Xbox or PC.

They did a TON of work on the graphics, more than most remasters. Digital Foundry did a good video on it.

@antime: I played it in 2013 and it already felt clunky and dated. Especially the shooting, which is most of the gameplay.

It's not free on Epic store so why would it be free on steam and it only has a 1 year exclusivity so you can buy it on steam next year. This seams like its the same deal with the Sleeping Dogs Remaster if you own it on PC It's not worth the money. Plus you can install HD texture packs and other mods for free that make the game look better not as good as the Remaster but close. If this was a $10 game I would say go for it but not at $40.

I could be wrong but I feel like in redoing the character models they completely fucked them up. They don't look like the same people anymore. Everything else looks good.

Not much different than original, just the light and dynamic shadow, and rendering. but it feels like they can't create a new game, so they end up with a remastering idea.

You are not taking crazy pills, a lot of people just give Bethesda games a massive pass because a ton of modders spent countless hours fixing and expanding their games. This leads to the situation that Bethesda doesn't learn or change anything about their games, always expecting the community to do the work for them, and sometimes even trying to lock said community out/profit from their work.

I think this is a fantastic looking remaster but there is absolutely some jank into the faces and audio now. They didn't redo any of the lip flaps to go along with the better models so all the voices may as well be coming out of those Johnny Gat heads for as close as it looks to someone talking.

Honestly I tink the idea that skyrim is a bad game is honestly fucking crazy lol. I mean look, its okay to dislike it or even think its a bad game but still, the pendulum on public opinion around that game has swung wayyyy too far back imo, and its very misrepresentative. Its a pretty good game in quite a lot of ways (Not that its without flaws), and I think the (rightful) hate of fallout 4 and 76 has come around to bite skyrim in the ass.
