Playdate: Sid Meier's Civilization VI - Rise & Fall

I'm assuming this seemed like a good idea at some point. It was not a good idea... bit went on entirely too long and felt way too forced.

The Civ 6 joke might've been okay as a 2-3 min bit, but 40 min? Was anyone in live chat enjoying it? I'm glad I watched the recording so I could skip. I played it in the background for 20 min to see what the payoff was and I wish I could send GBE an invoice to refund me for the minutes of life totally wasted. It was truly one of the lamest bits I've seen on GB or anywhere else on the internet, and I once watched a 15 min YouTube video of someone explaining the "correct" way to eat watermelon.

I thought this was pretty bad. Overacted way too hard to make it not funny.

This is the worst video content that I have seen on giant-bomb, even more so because I though we might see New Dan try and learn something. This would be an actually interesting series if it was what the title said it was. Very very Disappointing. Stop the gimmicks and learn something from waypoint.

"Dan getting his way without any repercussions" is not the crazy-ass shit they used to do years ago. It's the same shtick that's been going on for the past several years.

I love the surprise "bait and switch" of this (freakin' hilarious idea), but yeah, it went on too long and we didn't see nearly enough dumb dialog in The Quiet Man as a result. I wish GBE streams were longer, and we just got to skim through the big cutscenes explaining this nonsensical game and the mom-girlfriend thing.

I'm all for just fucking going for it and doing dumb shit. That has been part of the Giant Bomb ethos ever since those early Video Things. That's why I love crazy ideas like this every now and then. Maybe the Civ bit could've been a bit shorter but it was funny for sure. Especially the surprise switch.

And I'd really like to see you play through the rest of The Quiet Man with dialogue, boy that game..

I'll keep it short. This feature is not entertaining as it could have been in either way.

Eeeeh I was genuinely excited to see Dan try to learn a game I genuinely adore which doesn't get much rep on the internet, especially a popular gaming site such as this.

The 'joke' just made me want Dan to take an earnest attempt at it though. CiV and Civ IV really aren't complicated games.

The Wikipedia plot summary sounds like it was written by whomever left that Thumbs Up review they read on the Extra Life stream.

It also sounds like the plot was trying to combine a bog-standard shonen anime/marital arts storyline with a "gritty, realistic" noir tone. And it's a BEAUTIFUL example of why those two things DO NOT BLEND.

The "stinger" at the end of the audio playthrough is apparently Dane confronting CopDad, the MAN WHO ABUSED HIM AS A CHILD, for a rematch because their first fight 'ended in a stalemate.'

Also the supernatural stuff gets ZERO explanation.

Based on this comments section, either half the people here are trolling, or they have no concept of the type of content Giant Bomb sometimes puts out, and the bits and stuff.

While a Civ series would be great and something they should try at some point, this is completely character with GB, what they've been for years and the particular style of fuckery and goofiness that GBeast has had for years now. To come in here and complain about that is ludicrous to me.

I've also been here from the beginning and love their goofs. This was terrible. One of the lamest things I've seen on the internet, and I once watched a close up of a banana being stepped on by someone in brand new Nikes.

Also, while this "content" was divisive, what I actually find odd is not people who may disagree with me (different strokes), but what is confusing are the people describing this site and it's content as something I have NOT been seeing for the years I have been coming here.

At any rate, I am not "offended" or "bothered" or "uncomfortable" - I simple think this is not the sort of content I pay for. Mass Alex, Breaking Brad, Unprofessional Fridays (etc.) are why I signed up.

Failed attempts at humor that involve clickbait and yet another Quite Man focused stream/video are most definitely not. This stream/video has the sort of "humor" that probably works best with teenagers or college students in the first two years - it's "edgy" or "quirky".

Well sorry, but some of us have full time jobs and dont want to click on something only to feel like 30-50 minutes later we wasted our precious time and that our collective dollars are paying for this vs something else (since there is finite money and time for them to do stuff, it IS a zero-sum-game).

Really, instead of this, how about an ACTUAL Civ stream concerning the coming exp pack? How about getting Mass Alex 2 started THIS year? I can think of many other, better ways to have spent the time/money than this.

I'm both happy and sad that I always come here when the dust has already settled. It'd be nice to be part of the discussion as it develops, but at the same time I don't want to care about this to the point that I would force myself to try to watch GB content as soon as it comes out.

I for one am happy that GB occasionally makes content that is really devisive, because it makes for discussions that are very interesting to read. Of course, that's easy for me to say, because I never have a dog in any of these fights and I am not passionate enough about video games or GB's content direction to let stuff like this linger. But still... reading the comment sections when opinions clash is both insightful and entertaining.

I realize that's a selfish statement, because stuff like this obviously makes a lot of people feel uncomfortable, and to then say these comments are entertaining is kind of shitty, but then again, it seems every commenter in these discussions is often rather self-centered when raising concerns, so I don't feel too bad.

@loafofgame: well said! I truly loved this stream, came back to watch it as I missed Dan and Alex’s on stream together since Dan left. Dan had a way of bringing Alex out of his shell so Alex can truly shine. Loved this and it was great!

@binarygod: Never enough quiet man! FYI, have a career too, we make time for what we want and enjoy. Not everything is perfect but you make the best of it.
