No Jeff Bakalar really disappoints me. I can wait to listen to this podcast while working I guess.

The chair has to rotate sometimes. If Jeff never leaves, he can never come bakalar. Great guest too - looking forward to the discussions of dystopian futures ahead.

Although not as crazy as Konami, there were a lot of similarities to those working conditions in Regal Entertainment theatres when I worked there in college.

There were cameras everywhere throughout the building to make sure you were not slacking off.

You had to clock out for breaks and would get scolded if your breaks were either too short, too long or not within the first 6 hours of your shift.

If you did poorly in any area you would get relegated to simpler more boring tasks or scheduled for other work periods.

Now granted this was a minimum wage job and I saw both sides of it throughout my time there as both a minimum wage employee and a seasoned manager, but it was the worst working environment I was ever a part of. You were practically constantly under close scrutiny and in fear of getting documented for some shortcoming and apart from the General Manager no one received any rewards for hard work. As a manager I worked night shifts and each thursday when new movies came in and I had to build them up/ transfer them to the correct servers my shift would last from 6pm-5am the next day except I would be clocked out for the last several hours because I might get documented for going overtime - but then again I would get documented for not finishing my work also.

The shaming part is weird and unnerving at Konami but over at the US big corporations give just as little of a shit about their "human resources."

Oh shit, out scooping Scoops with that Gita Jackson get.

I haven't listened to it yet but I wonder if Gita was in town or if she did the old Skype thing. Maybe the BeastCast is more lax about that rule.

Why didn't they announce their guest last week? Afraid it'd fall through?

In regards to companies collecting information on you goes, I think there are a few reasons why people dislike it other than the fear of potential identity theft and general invasion of privacy.

First, with companies in general looking to collect large amounts of information as easily as possible, this means there is a very real possibility of companies people are employed at, or are seeking employment at, utilizing data collection companies to create unfiltered profiles for people, many of which are likely to be erroneous or wildly out of context. A person should not have to even think about fearing for their job security due to liking a post on Facebook, as is the case at Konami, or due to what searches they perform (for which there is no context nor even necessarily any guarantee of who was using the computer at the time), or even what links they click from friends (the success of the Rick Roll proves how often most people ask what a link is before clicking it)

Secondly, it simply makes the scope of the Internet feel smaller and more limiting than it actually is when so many companies are trying to utilize this data to 'give you what you want'. For example, I've searched for 'indie games' and 'so-and-so-game walkthrough' enough times on Google that Google now tosses the same few dozen sites at me for just about any game-related searches at all; it's nice enough for when I'm just feeling too lazy to go shift through those sites myself, but finding a site which is both somewhere I haven't been and isn't so deep in the search results that it doesn't even have anything to do with what I originally searched for is often shockingly difficult.

We like to envision the Internet as this massively chaotic and wonderful and terrible and surprising thing, and it still can be that, but the sites which many people spend most of their time on simply are looking to turn it into a funhouse mirror where all we can see is what they think we want them to make us see.

The Beastcast is just a nice, thoughtful, mature alternative to the regular Bombcast. I mean don't get me wrong I still like it quite a bit. But it feels like is become the "Dan Ryckert presents: Wrestling, Getting drunk and shit I won't eat" show. Which is fine. But it's nice to have an alternative.
