The Giant Beastcast: Episode 11

We're joined by Gita Jackson as we talk about Time magazine's vision of virtual reality, how Konami might have more threats than Dracula, and our highlights from Gamescom. Also, where do you want to spend your 9-5 in our dystopian future?

The Giant Bomb East team gathers to talk about the week in video games, their lives, and basically anything that interests them. All from New York City!

It's a minor complaint and maybe I just don't understand the "filed under" system but I have to say I was interested in hearing some Battlefront talk but it was literally about 10 seconds of Vinny say he caught the trailer. I had assumed if it was singled out there'd be a bit more of an actual conversation.

@slag: I think you're right it's probably more beneficial to their careers to speak their mind on Twitter in this way, but I'm skeptical of how "professional" that really makes people. Spontaneous ranting isn't something I associate with the level-headed professionals, it's something I associate with cable news. I think most recent big games coverage personalities more closely resemble cable news pundits than they care to admit.

I know what you mean.

I think you are 100% right that many really do mirror Cable News pundits, especially when you look at the youtuber set like Jim Sterling or Angry Joe etc . The content and slant may be different but the general approach is the same. Giant Bomb itself basically straddles the line between old style reviewing and modern off the cuff opinion and was an early pre-cursor of this.

I don't know if it's a deliberate choice for whatever reason for Gita to be completely open & frank on twitter as she seems to be from the little I've read, but I certainly acknowledge it could be part of building her "brand". Or maybe it's just what she wants to do and knows it won't hurt her prospects. Or maybe it's some other reason. Don't know, I don't know her. I just know she has written some video game related articles I found interesting and when I've heard on podcasts I've enjoyed her commentary.

Regardless of the reason behind her social media strategy, I think she knows what she's doing.

That's some pretty surprising religious bigotry coming from Austin in this one.

Comment 1: The Peter Dinklage thing in Destiny is weird, sure, but it's no Star Wars Galaxies "New Game Enhancement". It's like FFXV A Realm Reborn EXCEPT THE PLAYERS HATED IT.

Comment 2: Hey @austin_walker, have you played "Don't Take It Personally, Babe, It Just Ain't Your Story" by Christine Love? It's a fairly short, free VN that's all about privacy issues on the internet. Figure it ties in nicely to your discussion on this podcast.

Plus, I love writing that title.

Another tremendous episode - as much as I love the Bac Attack, having Gita on really made the episode. Hope GBE continues the trend of mixing it up with more female guests in the future.

Also, @austin_walker makes me want to read books about video game history.

Man, I love this podcast! Love the idea of having guests on the show, and the theoretical questions at the end are hilarious. Dare I say this is actually better than the bombcast?? *gaaasp*

Gita was a great guest, certainly wouldn't mind her coming back on at some time. Also I love that the first people she met out of the industry were Patrick, Vinny, Alex and Austin. Could have done way worse there.
