And there's no way you are going to have to transfer from your USB hard drive to the Wii's internal hard drive to play games.

It took Nintendo, what, 3 or 4 years before they allowed you to play virtual console and WiiWare games off of SD cards on the Wii, right? For years they said that you should just redownload the things you want to play any time you want to play them. Do you really have that much faith that they'll get it right, right from the start?

Even when they added the ability to play games off of SD on the Wii, there was still a constraint that there needed to be enough unused internal storage to put the game on to actually play it. There'll probably be issue with it.

This is from the horses mouth:

“You can plug in a full-on three terabyte hard drive if you want. I’ll love you as a digital consumer,” NOA CEO Reggie Fils-Aime told Engadget. The reason we did it that way is that the cost of that type of storage memory is plummeting. What we didn’t want to do is tie a profit model to something that’s gonna rapidly decline over time. We’ll let the consumer buy as much as they want, as cheaply as they want,”

How people have extrapolated this scenario where you have to move data back and forth from the internal flash memory to an external source is lost on me. Every first party game and many of the third party games are going to be released digitally and some of those games are pushing 16gb+. They even have a program in place offering a discount on digital purchases with the deluxe model. ( And I assume there will be a paid option for standard models. ) There's no way they would be pushing digital games this much if they intended you to go through a hassle everytime you wanted to play a different game by moving files back and forth between hard drives, it would completely defeat the purpose.

If i'm wrong, then yea it's dumb and 32gb and 8gb isn't enough and i'll probably never buy any full games digitally on the Wii U and never even bother hooking up a hard drive to it. However, i think all of the available information implies it's plug and play with external hard drives.

..and that's why I'm going to revolt if the PS4 strays away from how the PS3 (up to superslim) works with HDs because it's freaking marvellous and any other method would suck (also see: free online play & shiz)

(and it seems that we're heading for a PS4 presentation at E3 combined with a major Square demo, unless it's MS making another attempt at moneyhatting Japan)

@Katkillad: That article just says "you can go buy a big external hdd cause we aren't going to include sizable internal storage" without saying a single thing about data management, which has been a known and accepted thing for a pretty good while now? And people are thinking that because that's literally how it was for the Wii's first 4 years and even after they added "proper" SD card support (more than just manually moving files back and forth in the data management menus or deleting and redownloading content like you had to do before) it still needed to actually move the file to the system's internal memory before you could actually play it. That's where people are getting the idea that you'll have to do this awful file/storage management. Because Nintendo hasn't managed to actually show that they "get it" yet when it comes to digital download services.

I don't get how them having a rewards program suddenly says that they finally understand how data management should be handled. What it says is that they want people to buy games through them so they get a bigger cut/the entire cut of profits for a game, now that they'll be able to avoid selling things through retailers to a certain extent, and that reward system incentivizes people to buy through them rather than another source.

I for one would happily give up having to purchase and find storage for mountains of plastic that could instead be replaced by simple data. Really is going to be a pain next gen if PS4 or 720 don't have 3+ terrabyte drives as standard. I may very well wait for digital copies of console games selling day and date with retail to become standard practice before I even begin thinking about getting a new console. In the meantime PC will suffice even if I do miss some exclusives.

3TB standard won't happen. That is excessive. My Gaming PC only has 350 GB's of storage and that is just now starting to get close to filled after 4 years. I expect 300-500 GB's to be standard, with a possibility of a 1TB drive.

Not for me it isn't, I have about 5t's total and 80% of it is full, granted I do a lot of work and have a lot of files on my pc too, a few terrabytes seems reasonable given how much bigger data-wise games will be next gen. Right now a standard install is between 8 and 12+ gigs on PC but next gen surely that'll be closer to 15 - 25+ given all the incredibly high res textures, higher poly assets and 7.1 hd sound files.

Of that 5TB's how much of it is games? Of my 350 Gb's, about 100 of it is games. I have about 30 games installed on steam, half of which I don't frequently play so I could technically free up a lot of space.

Even if games get to 25 GB standard having a 500GB drive as the standard size would allow you to have 20 full retail games on at a time, and that is assuming it is strictly downloadable titles, which is not going to be the case with these next consoles. Having 1 - 2 TB's would be a waste and an unnecessary price increase unless the system was 100% digital distributed games. I think have expandable space is necessary for those of us who would want to do all digital, but as a standard storage in the TB's seems excessive.

As far as pronunciation, "roll-yat-kin-may" is generally how I prefer it. But yes, just read it backwards for meaning. Most people online just call me "Roly", though in multiplayer games people often just call me Royal (even though that's not in there).

"Nick" is fine.

Are you sure it's Windows 8 booting faster and not just "fresh Windows install syndrome"? I'm still stuck on Windows XP because my capture card doesn't have Windows 7 drivers and I did a fresh install about three months ago and it boots in to the OS in about 30-45 seconds, which is brisk enough for me to be asking "Does it really matter if it's faster than that?"

I would jump into oncoming traffic rather than endure a 45 second cold-boot of Windows. I don't know how you can live like that.

Pretty easily? It's less than a minute for a desktop PC. Are we as a people really so impatient now that 45 seconds is intolerable? I push the button as I pass by the PC when I first wake up and it is usually sitting idle for 10 or 15 minutes by the time I get to it. Waiting for it to reboot every now and then really isn't a big deal, either.

Yes. When my Win7 install will boot in 12 seconds and even that starts to chafe, 45 seconds is unimaginable.

Shit, that momentary pause between entering my password and the desktop appearing is maddening enough.

When it's a videogame, it makes sense to me, because you're engaged in something and then the game takes you out of that to pause the action for a few seconds while it loads. You want to get back in it.

But what are you seriously going to miss in a difference of 25 seconds? What demands that much immediacy? Are you afraid you're going to miss something somebody said on Facebook? Twitter? That if you don't get there 25 seconds earlier, that Youtube video isn't going to be there anymore?

Maybe it's because I don't sit here and wait for my PC to boot up. I turn it on and come back to it after I've made breakfast and done other things. But if you're gnashing teeth over a few extra seconds it takes Windows to boot up, that doesn't sound like a problem with the operating system to me.

I wouldn't complain about it, sure, but if there's a bullet point on the back of the box that says "BOOTS UP 15% FASTER!", well jeeze, a fresh install of Windows already boots up pretty fast. You ain't gonna sell me on a copy of Windows 8 on "It boots to desktop in 15 seconds instead of 35 or 40!"

Like... great... I guess... but I'd rather it have better backwards compatibility with older Windows programs. Instead of it grabbing me by the wrist and trying to convert me to some new touchscreen interface paradigm, I'd like it to better support the ways I personally use Windows. How about user friendly tools to better diagnose hardware problems? Tighter, more intuitive, less intrusive security? A guarantee that the Windows App Store won't become another Internet Explorer scenario where everybody has it and nobody likes it, or worse, slowly destroys the biggest advantage of the PC?  Or how about no more "You can only get Direct X11 if you buy our latest version increment because of reasons" bullshit? All of those would be a lot nicer than shaving a few seconds off of a boot time.
