Thursday Night Throwdown

Thürsday Night Throwdown: 02/28/13

Tim Schafer and crew join us on the couch for some insight into Brütal Legend... and Lemmy's apartment.

It's Thursday night and it's time for you to go up against us in a weekly throwdown of decidedly humble proportions.

Awesome TNT, anytime Double Fine comes over is a good time. I don't like when Brad is on the chat though. He seems to forget it's there and he rarely volunteers questions. Someone has to ask.

yup, Brutal Legend.

Heartbroken, stopped caring ages ago.

I get the love, but seriously... Brutal Legend was a fucking bummer.

Even the guy who created the damn thing can't be bothered to stay more than an hour.

He had to be with his daughter. Of course he'd leave.

I hope some of this new found attention to the game helps along the thoughts of a sequel. It was such an interesting world that i would love to return to.

I remember burning out on Sacrifice, also a first person RTS, when I couldn't hack the gameplay curve past a certain stage. This game kinda seems like that to me; it's a really unique setting, but potentially frustrating.

May still give this a try to see if I can handle a controller-based game better than a mouse and keyboard one. The only RTS campaign I've finished was Dune 2.

@paulunga said:

Lemmy being the first one to record is extra scary. That guy's INTENSE. Jack seems like much more of a normal guy's guy you'd get along with easily.

Edit: Tim saying that strategy and adventure games are popular in Germany is so funny because it's true. I'd really like to know what's up with our culture's interest in more cerebral games. Also, boardgames.

Well you know what other genre sells really well in Germany? All those "Garbage truck" simulation games.

I think part of the reason for this is that we are basically a nation of complaining smart-asses that always think we know best how to do something properly. All those simulation games are an outlet for people to prove just how much better they could do it, compared to the people who actually do it, whom we always complain about.

And i guess that we Germans are not that big on escapism/idealism as an culture, we still believe that everything needs to be as "real" and "down to earth" as possible as such we are more focused on materialism, while other cultures still find value some high spirited idealism as something good.

So is that a 'Spin Doctors' type of beard or an 'evil mirror universe' type of beard? I shall call it "The Nero".

Brutal Legend is proof that too much ambition can be a bad thing...wanted to love it, but the mix of RTS and 3rd Person action didn't mix well with me at all. All the RTS battles felt like way too much was happening and I never had the control of it all that I wanted to. The thirt person character view didn't work well when it came to ordering troops and making unity. Maybe I'll go back and try to finish it, but I just got too frustrated with missions towards the end.

Yeah, ouch. It's one thing to barely have any questions to ask guests who were kind enough to stop by, but to ditch them also. Poor tech couch, indeed.

I assume Brad was just put there last minute, probably, but he had all show to think up questions to ask.

Yeah, that wasn't pretty to watch. But besides that, another great visit by the Double Fine people and great hosting by Patrick!

Dang! I sent Brad M. an in-game message just as the match begin saying something like "You'll probably win THIS one Brad! This is actually my first human MP game!" but I guess the text chat wasn't working quite right. It seriously was though; I've had the 360 version for ages but except for some AI matches to learn the other faction units or to mess around this was the first real multi game I've played for BL. It was an honour to have my first match be against Brad, and I know he would have slaughtered me had he not been preoccupied with the whole "talking on the show" gig.

I really do hope this PC release gets some people to give MP a chance, even (especially!) those who dismissed the game initially. That match was SUPER fun and exciting and I basically only had experience in playing through the SP campaign (where the RTS stuff really does work best for preparing you for the real thing, multi; like any strategy game, the AI can only be so interesting), said practice AI matches, and from considering Tim's Tips (which he also largely tried to share during this show).

Honestly, I selected Drowning Doom just cause it hadn't been showed off yet and then played mainly just by trying to pick some good counters but still trying to use every unit possible to hopefully make it more interesting. From there, it was just a matter of getting in and using double-team abilities/slashing shit up to make things radical fun. When Brad was talking about using the Organist to possess a unit but didn't have luck doing it, I had actually just used mine to take over his Lightning Rod and shock the shit out of his troops from behind! So awesome. Such a cool game.

So I never beat Brutal Legend because I got super frustrating by the stage battles because I was terrible at them and didn't feel like I had enough control over my units or information on the state of the battle. But watching Brad Muir, who clearly knows WTF he's doing, play this makes it look really fun.
