Spelunky-lite....so it's a rogue-like? I have no idea where Alex is getting the Spelunky comparison from past the daily challenge.

The one time a game actually IS a roguelike, of course he has to go and use a different term on top of roguelike.

I'm pretty sure he was just being a troll; this is the most Rogue-like release I've seen in a long time.

Also, @ateatree, you should see how identifying items used to be done.

I'd be down for this on the Vita. Sounds like a game that would benefit wearing headphones.

The Bard mode where you just take turns seems like the version of this game I would want to play. The whole rhythm game "mechanic" doesn't seem like it adds anything substantial besides the novelty of mashing up a seemingly unrelated genre with a roguelike.

As a counterpoint, Sequence was a game I liked that layer RPG mechanics onto a DDR rhythm game though, so maybe I would like this game??? I'm not sure.

This is the kind of game I didn't know I wanted but now I WANT GIMME GIMME GIMME.

According to the game's website, Danny Baranowsky did the soundtrack for this. Double gimme. edit--- and this is mentioned in the QL i now notice. I really should wait until I'm finished watching video to write these comments. >__<

edit edit---- hrmmm... $15 is pretty steep for early access. I will wait until game is finished. I'm starting to very much dislike early access in practice.

May I suggest Fatal Labyrinth to you? This game made me think of that game as soon as I saw how the game plays except the music part.

This...this is something I definitely want in on. GBEast seems to be bringing all the games I want to play.

Also, weird: most of the time when I watch a GB video through YouTube, I get a ton of other GB videos and related content at the end. This time, it's all Minecraft stuff from unknown LPers. I wonder which keyword it's hitting this time...

The rhythm mechanic is a sneaky way of putting real-time urgency into a turn-based game; everything is still taking discrete turns moving, but you get less than a second between each turn to decide what to do next. Most of the game's deaths are due to choking and screwing up the patterns you need to defeat the enemies.

Also, there's at least boss stage where there's irregular beats, just in case keeping a steady rhythm was too easy. (The one I encountered had every 8th beat missing.)

The beat mechanic makes this interesting to me but for some reason my brain is not... cooperating with the screen shake, like at all. :/

Guess I need to try this one out, first. Couldn't get a good feel for it from the Quick Look alone.

I had not heard of this Genesis game before, but the screenshots make it look very similar (I think it's the room layouts and perspective). Also this part of the description from the wiki makes me want to play it:

Gold can be found throughout the castle, but can not be spent. The more gold collected, the greater number of people that appear at Trykaar's funeral (game over screen).

It's really funny that gold just gets you a better funeral when you die.

Looks good. I've already seen everyone and their momma playing this already on Twitch for the past couple weeks non-stop (my fault for watching). If I hear that first level song again, I'm going to jump out of my window. I'll probably be all about this game in a few months, but right now I've seen too much.

I was trying to avoid seeing too much of this before I got it and I'm glad I did. So far, I love it!

It's early access but really doesnt feel like it. Only 3 of 4 zones (it took me a few hours to beat the first zone once, for reference of time) are in and not all of the characters, but if I didn't know that I wouldn't feel like I'm missing anything. What I've played feels really solid. This is not one of those shaky early access games - this thing feels almost done. And I'm pretty sure this is the launch price anyways.

Also, pretty much any complaint with the visuals can be turned off - disco floor, beating heart, screen shake.

ALSO ALSO, using your own music for this is hella fun.

Cool. This is definitely a rougelike with a music twist. The destructible walls and the daily challenge seem inspired by Spelunky but the movement, combat and item systems are very similar to other more traditional rougelike games.

I was all on board this game at first but holy shit does listening to the same song over and over again gets tedious while you try to suss out what the items they don't tell you about are, or what seemingly random behavior will this enemy have.

It is a bad thing when you can turn off the MAIN ASPECT of the game (the beat movement) and it is STILL better then 95% of the other pure "rogue" dungeon crawlers made in the last 5 years.

Someone needs to make an actual good, modern, "rogue" game.

I understand the song complaint, but mysterious items is a trait these games have. They are supposed to be a surprise when you first get them and you are supposed to remember if they were good/bad for next time. Also the enemy behavior isn't random. Each enemy has a unique attack pattern, as demonstrated in the training area.

Picked this game up very soon after it went into Steam early access, and while it's already extremely solid, the direction of updates since then has been very aimless. Lots of bizarre additions that seem to be thematically at odds with the original direction for the game, like... leprechauns. Also, the addition of boxes and barrels, which are essentially chests that can only be opened with bombs.

Feels like the opposite of Nuclear Throne, where every update brings something that improves the core gameplay experience, while Crypt of the Necrodancer's updates add trivial nonsense that adds nothing interesting or fun, just a momentary amusement before you realize that nothing has changed since launch.

I wish they'd just finish the final floor.
