Unfinished: EX: SpyParty 03/23/2018

Chris Hecker stops by to show off an espionage gathering! Spies, snipers, and banana bread!

my son had trouble in 1st grade with kids not wanting to play with him. it was because he was constantly addding and over explaining rules to games that could ahve been simple fun. He got it when we sat him down, so whats this adult doing?

Is it just me or would this be an absolutely perfect game to offer a VR option? Have the Spy operated by M+K and put the Sniper into VR goggles and you have a perfect way to do co-op on a single machine with no screen-peeking guaranteed.

I thought the same, but I'd probably do it the other way around -- put the spy in VR, as it'd be cool to look around those environments, and picking out fine cues from a distance as the sniper probably wouldn't be easy in VR.

I also think VR would be great as an option for a second screen for local play but think it would definitely have to be locked to sniper as most vr movement as the spy would make the spy stand out far too easily

Ah, that's true. I hadn't considered that. Maybe the best way to go would be to have a option -- if you've got a setup where the spy can be out of line of sight of the sniper, you can go with that setup, or if not, you can put the sniper in VR to avoid leaking information.

The newer headsets (and better resolution) probably address some of my concerns about not being able to pick up fine cues at a distance anyway.

Looks like a very cool game, and honestly Chris his enthusiasm made the video more interesting for me. This is clearly someone that really cares about his game and the community of players!

Awesome unfinished. I didn't expect to be interested in 90 minutes of SpyParty, but all the game design ideas kept me on board.

I always feel like this game should collab with Hitman for an online mode. Theres something there i feel. Spy Party feels like a birds eye view of a Hitman situation to me.

Look, I appreciate Chris Hecker's enthusiasm, but also there are things he talked about that just weren't worth talking about.

Like, showing a gallery of the different maps, and talking about the gameplay differences; yeah, no shit, I'm sure that was fun to concept out as a designer, but also I'm pretty sure every multiplayer designer could share the same thing about their maps. Some maps have different overall size or sightline obstacles or hazards or whatever the fuck, whether the game is Spy Party or Splatoon or Windjammers or whatever. But to the end user, all that boils down to is "our game offers a variety of maps, that trust me, we thought out and playtested", which is just an understood expectation of multiplayer games at this point.

Also, just never call your game an esport, even if you're positive it is very finely tuned for competitive play. First and foremost, your game is a multiplayer game. Maybe it's never anything more than that, a game played between friends who both own a copy, and then you have a few hundred people playing it online for a few years and that's it. If it gets popular and actual competitive tournaments happens with the game, that's great, it's sort of an esport, but calling it that prerelease when it may never be the kind of game that tournament organizers care to embrace is just a dumb move.

@langly: I think he was really excited or he simply needs to switch to decaf.

@bisonhero: All else aside, I interpreted him calling the game an e-sport as pretty clearly a joke.

This game looks dope! Enjoyed Chris's enthusiasm once they got to the gameplay. Not sure why so many commenters felt the need to point out that he rambled a bit. Jeez, give the guy a break; he's a developer, not a media personality--and this isn't network television. I hope he avoids reading any of it because he game looked awesome, and seeing passion from a developer is a fun thing to watch.

great video! long, in-depth videos with or without is what separates this site from every other. I found Chris' narration easy to follow to, his enthusiasm is contagious :)

I can imagine that to balance the AI you'd actually want them going into stuff randomly like a human would.

@sekou: no. Fuck that. No one who I'm referencing added anything to this conversation. There was no constructive criticism. There was just whining. That's not an opinion anyone needs to hear.

@bugbarbecue: Well thankfully your opinion is just that: YOUR opinion. The quicklook was poorly done, by quicklook standards. Rather than (just) complain, what people were saying was maybe reel in the guest so it doesn't go as off the rails next time. There's your constructive criticism, duder. Peace.

I heard Abby talking about this game on the Beastcast and this looks really intriguing. Good job Hecker for dumping the same-old-same-old!

Just wanted to say I enjoyed this Unfinished! There's a lot to this game so it's interesting to hear the dev talk about it. Here a podcast with more about his history before Spy Party and leading up to early access (a longer version of this intro with more diversions).
