@bisonhero: I know that it's cool to hate on Patrick, but do you really need more exposure to a concept than that to ask a question? How many games would one need for you to not act like a dick?

I think the term "invincibility frames" only makes sense in punishing games like fighting games or Dark Souls where the invincibility may literally only be a few frames. In Galak-Z, you're unhittable for kind of a while when you activate that dodge move; it seems generous. So it came across as Patrick being proud of himself for knowing a fancy term he learned recently when he could've easily said "So their shots won't hit you during the dodge roll?"

I know Giant Bomb draws a certain crowd, but not everybody knows what invincibility frames are. It's not really a term worth pulling out unless you really have to.

I get where you're coming from, but I think Patrick using a term he's familiar with as an off the cuff remark during a Quick Look is different than if he'd used it in a written article/preview/review.

I know Giant Bomb draws a certain crowd, but not everybody knows what invincibility frames are. It's not really a term worth pulling out unless you really have to.

I don't think 'invincibility frames' is all that obscure. And even if someone hadn't heard it before, they could probably figure it out.

I wonder what it is about Patrick that gets under people's skin so easily.

Personally, I don't mind his personality or what he writes about at all. Dude is alright.

The only thing that bothers me is when he wants to understand a more obscure/niche genre, barely puts in any time, and then says "Oh man, I totally get it now". Like when he played Monster Hunter for like 9 or 10 hours. While that's more than the rest of the GB crew, I also know there are other game journalists for whom Monster Hunter is much more of a passion and have sunk dozens of hours into the series, and I respect their opinions on the series more than Patrick's. Ditto for his strategy game fling, where to his credit he played XCOM and Fire Emblem Awakening, but both of those games are the most streamlined they've ever been and they're on the simpler end of the strategy/tactics game spectrum.

Anyway, maybe I'm extrapolating too much, but "invincibility frames" seems like it's in the same camp. Patrick is not the guy who plays hours and hours of Street Fighter and cares about frame data. I don't think he's some expert who knows where the invincibility frames are in the Dark Souls roll so he can wait until just the right moment almost every time and then roll through an attack.

That being said, I'm not sitting here going "Fuck Patrick's opinion on all games". He put enough time into Spelunky, for example, that he knows his shit pretty well and he clearly isn't just bullshitting when he talks to people about it. By his own admission, though, that's a weird anomaly and he's usually not much of a technical gamer who really cares to know every in and out of a game system (especially if it's a multiplayer game), and instead he is usually more into narrative-focused games.

So uh, is this not coming to PC anymore? I could swear they announced it as a PC game as well way back when. I'd be really disappointed if it wasn't, since it looks totally amazing even at this point in development.

Really loving the art style and the trappings of a late 80's anime. Gameplay kinda reminds me of Pixel Junk Shooter as well, the physics-ness of it, shooting out lava to hurt enemies and shit going flying everywhere. Looking pretty cool.

I'm not really into indie games,

That's a blanket statement you probably don't really mean. For example, I would've said the exact same thing until I found Indie games I really like, such as Thomas Was Alone, Hotline Miami, Spelunky, Gone Home, etc. Don't give up on Indie games; they cover such a wide gamut that I'd be really shocked if there literally wasn't something for everyone under the Indie umbrella.

I saw this at PAX in august and was super impressed. The story stuff seemed really cool (the 80s anime vibe is just freaking awesome), so I really hope they keep that stuff even though its procedural generated now (which makes sense when you think about how the combat and enemy dynamic works).

This was my favorite PS4 game at PAX, I hope this gets a PC release date soon because I don't want to spend 450 (fuck you Canadian dollar) on a ps4 just to play this.

The credits were fan-fucking-tastic

C'mon, read between the lines, you two.

If Skulls of the Shogun eventually made its way to Windows 7 PC after being locked up on 360 and Windows 8 for like 6 months or a year or whatever, I'm pretty fucking sure that Galak-Z is coming out on PC some amount of months after the PS4 version. But right now they're just going to talk about the PS4/Vita version to make Sony happy.

This game looks hella rad. 17-bit bringing another good time, it looks like. I quite liked Skulls of the Shogun and Galak-Z seems like it's shaping up quite well.

Exactly. This happens often enough people should know at this point. And Sony (or any big publisher/platform holder) providing help and funding to smaller devs eventually benefits everyone in most cases. So everyone stop being grumps, just support cool games!!! (and plus I appreciate having portable Vita versions of all these experiences)

@bisonhero: Patrick used the term "invincibility frames" correctly.

And no, using the term correctly does not make you an authority on fighting games, Street Fighter, or anything of the sort. To come to that conclusion is ridiculous.
