South Park translates into a game disturbingly well.

I'm not sure if you're serious. South Park is anything but 'edgy' and "funny" implying not is subjective. I'm more perplexed by the whole calling it 'edgy' thing.

The Stick of Truth showed up on the last episode of the 3rd Black Friday trilogy last season

I didn't really find a lot of the humor all that funny (I was never a huge fan of Cartman), but man, the gameplay looks sooooo good. Definitely gonna give this a go.

South Park is an entire show built around shock/gross-out humor and kids saying bad words. If that isn't the most rote form of "edgy" then I don't know what is. Hahah a talking poop. Cartman said fuck. Great stuff. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

No, so far they've done "Unfinished" videos for Audiosurf 2, Next Car Game, Snow, and The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot.

That was true in 1999, but nowadays that's a super reductive way of looking at the show. At its best, it can be one of the sharpest comedies on television. That's not to say it's not still wrapped in silly gross-out and/or "offensive because offensive" jokes, but that's not everything South Park has on offer.

@larrydavis: But you dismissing the show as "edgy" and "funny" as if that's an objective fact is just you straight up trolling. I've not been a fan of the show for some years, but it is generally one of the best liked and well regarded animated shows of all time (I'd say maybe second behind golden age The Simpsons). So just dismissing it as unfunny show trying to be edgy just for the sake of it does the show a huge disservice.

I don't like Southpark and I don't like this game. Vinny is pretty cool though.

The way they use the silent protagonist trope to comedic effect is brilliant. I can't wait for this game.

Used to love South Park (when I was 15), but I haven't found it funny for a very long time. This footage doesn't inspire any confidence, very underwhelming typical "shocking" humour. I can't help but feel South Park is going to look incredibly dated and not shown much in the future because the line it's riding now in terms of being edgy will be unacceptable and look as bad as 70s sitcoms with race and gay humour.

@amyggen: It was directly in response to somebody being surprised "Jew" is a class. When that's an extremely South Park thing to do.

@shagge: I saw an episode a couple of years about where Stan's dad was jizzing everywhere because of fart porn or something?

Butters is the only character on the show I like, largely because he's not some evil asshole like everyone else, and also seems to be a fairly accurate portrayal of an actual kid.

I own every South Park season so far but they're stored in the attic; I instead watch censored TV copies. The show certainly has a good deal of shock humor--which I dislike, hence my preference for the censored version--but it's so much more than that. I enjoy it for its sociopolitical commentary, which is still spot-on since season five.

@mlarrabee: That's how I feel about Reno 911!, I wish the DVDs had an option for the censored dialogue. In general, bleeped curse words are funnier than the actual word.

This game looks kinda cool, although the whole "Haha your name is Douchebag" thing seems to draw on the worst elements of South Park's humour.

But oh god, the unbroken silence as they watch the gameplay is breaking me. Did they just cut out their audio or was there really like like ten minutes where the staff didn't at all react to what was happening?

I really like the look of this. Havent watched southpark in years but this makes me want jump back in. Obsidian can do brillant but flawed rpgs I hope this is better than alpha protocol in that respect.

Wow, this looks great! I'm a little surprised, to be honest.

I suppose only time will tell if the gameplay actually reaches a full level of depth to carry it through. Hopefully it's not just a vehicle for jokes, like I feel the Penny Arcade games turned out to be.

...have you watched the show? Cartman is basically the only evil asshole character, everyone is some satirical character, a complete idiot or just pretty chill (most of the kid characters). The humor doesn't come from the swearing, it comes from the absurdity of the situations which often point out the absurdity of reality. Swearing helps for a punchline and adds to the humor. There's plenty of gross out humor but that's a matter of taste. And if you think Butters is close to the average 10 year old, oh boy, have I got news for you.
