Unprofessional Fridays: 09/11/2015

I water the hell out of my lawn in Colorado, because even though they send notices and do the whole "conserve water!" bullshit nonstop all summer long, they also *fine you a significant amount* if your lawn is not green, has bald spots, has too many weeds, is too short, is too tall, etc. And the only way to avoid your lawn being any of those things is to properly and regularly water it.

Agreed. Kind of self-absorbed and inconsiderate thing to do.

Do agree with some on here that the whole crew seemed in good spirits. that's nice!

i don't think it's sinister as all of that. they were just enjoying watching him play and talk and they seemed to all lose track of how long it ran.

I understand your concern, but it's not every week that a perfect video game comes out.

And it wasn't like the others seemed to want to move on to another game, and the chat was loving it. I have no problem with this basicially being a Mario Maker stream with some MGSV at the end.

It's becoming increasingly clear that I need to stay away from Giantbomb until I finish MGS.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that it's inconsiderate or selfish or anything like that, but as someone who doesn't really care about Mario all too much - much less messed up user created "wacky" Mario levels that are novel but don't seem especially awesome to actually play - it was a segment that dragged on for a really long time.

"Perfect" game or not, I think it's always good to keep an eye on the clock so that one game won't overshadow the entire segment because hey, we all like different things. It's cool if they play a game I'm not into for 30 minutes or so, I can still listen to the interesting conversation, but after over an hour it's a bit much to stomach.

@humanity: But this isnt exactly unusual there have been times when this happened on upf the podcast or hell sometimes the whole site hasn't covered anything I paticularily cared about for a period of time I didn't like, but this doesnt bother me.

Considering that that long form and personality driven content is kind of the core of, giant bomb I don't think you can get the content without a shifting portion of the sites viewers feeling this way some of the time.

I know MGSV is an amazing game, but best action game of all time? The actual "action" components of the game are good, but super fiddly. I can't count the number of times when context sensitive commands made me do something that I wasn't trying to do.

@humanity: I guess it always depends on how much you like to watch a particular game being played. I really enjoy watching them play Mario Maker, so I don't mind a super long segment of that at all. You don't, so you wanted them to move on. That's how it always is, and it's probably nearly impossible for them as "content creators" to find a balance that will please everyone here.

@amyggen: Yeah, I'm with you there. People get really crazy about spoilers. Almost anything is a spoilers anymore. It's really stupid. I was just complaining about how Brad handles them, that's all.

@caketeleporter: @amyggen:I mean the balance is just keeping an eye on the clock so no segment runs on for too long. They have definitely done it in the past with games that I enjoyed so it wasn't a problem for me then, but a more elegant solution to having half the people upset is to simply limit the individual segment length. I'm not saying they need an egg timer running or anything, but just have Jason give them a sign that they've been on something for a while now.

I mean thats not crazy unreasonable I don't think? It doesn't seem like it takes a lot of effort and you cover a broader range of audience interests. It seems a bit lame to just shrug and say "well thats the creative process, deal with it"

@humanity: Honestly, it's more of a case of the fact that you don't HAVE to watch everything on this website. There are plenty of videos that had Patrick in them, or Patrick segments in UPF that I was just not into at all, so I skipped them. If you're not into Mario, they make it pretty clear from the description that it's a Mario focused episode of the show. If you're watching the livestream and get bored, do something else.

Having a set schedule and trying to force different games into each episode when they're obviously not into it goes against the type of content that Giant Bomb is best at. They have no requirement to entertain their entire audience with every video, lest they turn into soulless smiling jerks spouting hip and cool lingo and being positive all the time.

OK sorry, that was a bit of my opinion getting in there at the end, but I think you understand what I'm getting at.

@humanity: It's not half the people upset though and given the population of the site interests are broad enough that it's probably way less than that anyway, given that video games covers all the umbrellas.

I'm saying that the way the content is made freeform and long is what leads to it's quality and that this would be impeded if this wasn't the case.

What you are arguing is that upf should exist and operate in a manner seperate from the podcast or the general staff led garden path tripping nature of coverage.

I basically only listened to the last half hour of the last Bombcast because of the MGSV discussion and me not wanting, mainly mechanical and structural if I'm honest, spoilers, but that's not a problem for me because in the future they will devote time to something I will listen to.

So what was it?

@caketeleporter: @pudge: I get what you guys are saying and I fully understand the allure of Giant Bombs freeform style of content creation. I'm just saying, hey, keep an eye out. I love Giant Bomb, I love the rambling form of the Bombcast, but it wouldn't hurt if someone did keep an eye on the clock. Jeff actually did this fairly often on UPF's in the past when he'd say "ok well lets move on" whenever something was going on for too long. The slightest bit of structure wouldn't instantly turn them into soulless, corporate, robots.

But hey, thats just my opinion, I completely understand where you guys are coming from as well.

@humanity: That's cool I get what you are saying too I guess, It's just that I would rather have one big thing that I like a lot, less often.

It's also that in the few instances I don't want to watch or listen it's rarely the games that turn me off segments but the attitude of the crew to the games, (or a particular non-game thing sometimes.)

Probably one of my favourite UPF in a while. It's just great to see the whole crew with high energy and in a good mood.

Conversationally, this might be my favourite UPF with the guys just shooting the shit while Jeff plays Mario Maker.

@mrnood1e: yeah it's very strange how they just kind of went well Kinda Funny are streaming it before it even released fuck its lets spoil it. They've certain not even tried to dart around it remotely. Made for a lean Bombcast this week :(

@mub: DMC4 is overall one of the weaker main DMC games and I love the game and had the best combat in the series but DMC3 is a better game. Bayonetta tops the DMC series in combos and combat. Bayonetta 2 is as big a leap from DMC1 to DMC3 in improvements. I mean then the action itself cannot be matched. Just in the opening act you fight on top of jets in NYC then proceed to fight Ghomora on stop of a building. Later there are things like you surf while beating a giant Angel Dragon.

MGR tops over NGII as both amazing Ninja Action games but MGR takes it to the next level.

This isn't even true because it's not even the best game in it's series. Devil May Cry 3 and DmC are better than Devil May Cry 4.

Man it sucks that the GBeast playdate isn't up yet. I tuned in in the middle and decided to watch the archive so I'm not missing anything... But I guess it will come up monday.

Also it sucks that I have no time to play MGS V, since it seems to be a great game (also, I still have to finish witcher 3, and at the rate I'm playing, that could still be a ways off).

@mub: I like all of DmC then the good half (and yes I'm talking about Dante) of Devil May Cry 4. I don't care about how much "depth" Nero may have. He was boring as hell and being stuck with one of each weapon type was super lame to me.

Ummm nah. These UPFs are always so bad when Jeff is not there. He makes these shows run smooth and keeps it entertaining. The Mario Maker stuff was fun.
