I think I first saw Wargames on cable TV back in 1984 or so. They ran it a lot so I watched it a lot. It was pretty dang scary at the time.  I also watched The Day After, probably in the 7th grade (& I saw Tron at the movie theater).  There is this great youtube alternate Wargames ending I thought I should share:

I caught this on TV last year for the first time in a while, and Ryan's right; the movie still holds up surprisingly well.  There's that real 80's cold war vibe, but the acting is solid and the characters seem real, and not just 80's stereotypes.

I have to say I've seen War Games quite a few times over the years and it's all ways been pretty good, but less so recently.  I guess as things change in this case the more hookey things get.  But there is nothing intrinsically wrong with the movie.

They filmed that movie here in Albuquerque, and my gf actually worked on the set. We were both psyched to see it but when it came out and we finally went we were SO disappointed. That movie is terrible on so many levels it hurts my soul. I would definitely love to see Ryan rip into it on an episode of TANG.

Sure it wasnt a perfect film by any means, but I thought it did what it set out to do fairly well- create a bunch of video game like action scenes wrapped around by a plot that does some interesting  social commentary. What disappointed you?

Ah... you actually liked it? I admit I enjoyed the intro scene, where Gerard Butler whispers "Turn me around!" in the middle of a firefight.  I thought the movie would focus on what it would be like to see what is going on around you, but being unable to control your actions. The premise was intriguing if not all that original, but from then on the movie seemed to lose its way. "Kable" became just another generic action hero protagonist, but one that was totally unrelatable.

None of the characters are developed such that they show any depth, almost all of them are just hyper exaggerated stereotypes. The spoiled rich kid, the sex-obsessed fat pervert, the "good guy" convict... it's like it was meant to be a parody, but it was never funny. It seemed like it was being crass just for the hell of it, pandering to what the marketing team perceived as their "core demographic" of teabagging gamers.  Kyra Sedgewick could not have possibly said "fuck" any more than she did in the film.

They may have been trying to make a social commentary about human depravity, but just showing a bunch of sex and violence doesn't do that. You have to actually address why people do what they do and how it is wrong.

My high expectations probably made me hate what I saw even more, but it was a bad movie to begin with that left a terrible taste in my mouth.

You made some good points that I agree with but I think the big difference maker was that I went into the movie expecting nothing special and got just a little bit more than expected with the surprise of the social commentary which I thought was intriguing. Also, knowing the directors past (they directed Crank 1&2, which I thought were better than Gamer) is very important. I knew what their latest outing would be just as crass (if not more) as their previous works which I enjoyed thoroughly and I expected nothing different. I agree that the main character turned into the generic main good guy, but as for the stereotypes (surprisingly) enjoyed them and I cant pin exactly the reason why (maybe I thought at the time they were doing that on purpose to prove a point? Its been 11 months since I saw it so forgive me if my memory as to why I somewhat enjoyed it is off). I also enjoyed Michael Hall's very memorable performance as the main bad guy, especially that very cool musical number towards the end. As a fan of their previous works I also enjoyed the numerous call backs to Crank which I thought were very nice wink at the fans. I guess we expected different things from the start of the movie and our opinions are different because of it so in the end neither of us are really wrong.

I agree, I don't think an opinion on a movie can really be wrong (unless it is completely influenced by what other people have already said, in which case it's not really your opinion). I guess I went in not knowing what that director's style was. Either way I definitely think they should do a TANG on it, I would be really interested in Ryan's take.
