The SIG Sauer P226 is known for it's reliability and accuracy, and is arguably the best pistol of modern designs. It is overlooked for it's appearance, overshadowed by the Beretta 92 which belongs in the same generation as the P226. The P226 was adopted by The United States Navy SEALs and many other military organizations around the world, but it's price and looks make it less popular than the Glock 17 and the Beretta 92F/FS.
The P226 is an all metal gun with plastic or wood grips, has no safeties, has a decocker and can fire in both single and double action mode. It is known to be the most reliable semi automatic pistol ever conceived, and SIG Sauer claims that it has "to hell and back reliability".
There are some custom SIG Sauer P226 pistols with 1911 style controls featuring a thumb safety and a slide release. A side note is that SIG is Swiss and Sauer is German. SIG does produce some weapons of their own, a la SG 552 & SG 550.
IMPORTANT NOTE : The SIG Sauer P226 has a nearly identical version of it in . 45ACP, the P220, and this pistol makes an appearence in the STALKER games, and should not be mixed for the P226 which comes in 9mm and .40S&W.
