Fate is a force in the background of all things that determines what is going to happen to the world and its characters. Many games incorporate fate as a vital component of the story or as a convenient plot device.
Some games shift forward in time part-way through, moving focus from the original characters to a new cast. Often, this is done to transition the story's focus from the original protagonist to the protagonist's grown son or daughter.
The main characters of each Fire Emblem game. Whenever one of these characters are defeated in battle, the game is lost.
A device by which a character's motivations or expectations are influenced by a suspiciously absent family member.
Sequels that have the player controlling a different character than the preceding game(s).
Everyone that is born has parents. These games feature adults with children of their own.
When the character the player is controlling dies as part of the game's plotline.
A tragic hero is a protagonist who makes several mistakes to fall from glory, or is affected by tragedy and seeks revenge or redemption.
