Brad, in the latest "game of the year" quick look for the game, said that there is a big surprise/secret in the game. Can someone please tell me what this is?

I don't have a Wii and, therefore, would probably never end up playing this game, but it, nonetheless, seems pretty interesting.

Harry is actually dead, the whole thing is Cheryl's dream, who sort of made her father a hero because she felt guilty about his death.

All the endings are up on Youtube. I think there are five in all, including a UFO ending. Most of are fairly similar to what Black_Rose described.

Also keep in mind it's coming out for the PS2/PSP, though as mentioned in the GOTY award video, I can't imagine it being quite the same without the control scheme.

Just check out the Silent Hill Wikia or something like that. But, to cut a long story short, Harry's daughter is being counceled by Kaufmann, because she can't let go the memories of her late father, no matter if he was a good one or a son of a bitch, and the whole game apart from the psychiatric sessions is a figment of her imagination.

Eh, I don't like the way Black_Rose described the game. How about this:

HUGE COLOSSAL GAME/ENDING SPOILER AHEAD.

It is Cheryl, an 18-year old girl, who the psychiatrist is questioning. This is because she is completely broken, criminal and confused ever since her dad - Harry Mason, the seeming protagonist of the game - died in a car crash eleven years ago. Starting with the car crash, you control Cheryl's idealized version of Harry, the loving father, through a nightmarish vision of Silent Hill populated by locations, feelings and figures of Cheryl's past, looking for his daughter (you!).
The further you progress, the more adamantly the town, it's "inhabitants", the psychiatrist and Harry himself try to remind Cheryl of the fact that her father is not only dead and gone, but probably not the knight in shining armor that she makes him out to be. Whenever you get too close to the truth, the game world freezes over and idealHarry gets chased by monstrously clinging versions of Cheryl who try to stop him from venturing further.
The game ends with Harry reaching the lighthouse, where he is being told Cheryl is located. The lighthouse turns out to be lighthouse clinic - the very same clinic you are being questioned in by Dr. K.
After all the nightmares, all the questioning and all the ends that are being tied up, both Harry and Cheryl realize what is happening with her. There is a quick, dramatic interplace between traditional gameplay and psychiatrist gameplay before father and daughter share a final moment, and Harry freezes over, finally vanishing from her life.
Cheryl leaves the clinic with her mother, and takes one final look at the tape from the beginning, which this time shows what kind of man her father really was.

are dependant on how you play Harry throughout the game. The respective endings / personalities you play are also reflected throughout the game world, conversations, characters, phone calls, etc.

It is not a "shock ending", nor a "twist ending" really. You will guess the "twist" very early on. But that doesn't meager how great the ending is staged and told, and how much you will appreciate that knowledge in your second playthrough.

@Meowayne: To be fair, the word "spoil" and "spoilers" appear in the title of the thread and the OP is specifically asking for major spoilers about the end of the game. If anyone wanders in here and gets spoiled, it is their own damn fault.

Just listened to the GOTY bombcast where the took a break so that Brad could spoil it for them, so naturally I had tp read a wikipedia entry about it. It sounds really cool, and Meowayne did a great job in his description. I wish I could play it on my own, but I don't like the creepy, tension filled games and know that I would never finish it

wow, that's actually pretty cool. I was also reading somewhere on the forums here that this game isn't exactly a remake but a kind of continuation of Silent Hill 1 for the Ps1. I haven't played that game but apparently there's also a father named Harry looking for his daughter named Cheryl in Silent Hill in the first game. The person's comments, that I was reading, said that maybe in Shattered Memories, Cheryl, all grown up now, is actually remembering the events of Silent Hill 1. If that's true, that is pretty fucking awesome.

It's not "it was all a dream", in the same way that describing a Lynch movie with "it is all a dream" is pretty dumb.

What happens in Silent Hill: SM is as real and as tied into reality as the events in SH1 or 2.
