Looks like Sony decided to slash the price before launch. Pretty good deal for the PS3 version if you also have a Vita as it is a cross-buy title, buying the PS3 version entitles you to a Vita downloadable version of the game.

Some might say it's desperate or a lack of faith in the title but I think it is a smart move. Not every game has to be a $60 disc or a $15 downloadable. I love Sly Cooper and would have been more than happy to pay $60 for a new entry, everyone has those day 1 franchises they pay full, but Sly Cooper isn't a mainstream franchise. The game looks great, previews have been positive, Sanzaru Games has seems to have treated the franchise with respect and the demo was fun in my opinion but Sony is being realistic. This isn't going to break the sales charts but at this price point someone with fond memories of Sly or someone who has been interested in the series and sees this new at $40 will have an easy time swallowing the purchase. Sony is banking on enough of those type of people to walk away profitable and I think it will work.

What do you guys think? Good or bad sign? Are you more or less interested? Indifferent?

Makes me think All-Stars didn't do as well as they hoped.

I actually wan't going to buy this at launch because of how fast games drop in price now, like Battle Royale. At $40 bucks I will pick it up at launch and show my support. I still need to finish Sly 2 and 3 on PS3.

Got the demo with purchase of Ratchet and Clank HD and all i can say is it looked amazing. Gameplay its totally an old school platformer, but damn it looks awesome. Super smart in reducing price as 40 is a lot more attractive than 60.

I played Sly 2 and thought it was a cool game, and from what little I've seen of this it seems pretty cool too, but I'm not interested enough to have this news sway me one way or the other. I'll probably make my final decision after watching the quicklook.

Now if it was a new Ape Escape on the other hand...

There have been a bunch of minigame ones according to the franchise page (even a cart racer?) but as far as full-on, regular-ass Ape Escape games go there was the first one on PS1, the second and third one on PS2 and a remake of the first one on PsP.

The Move game was some lame, first person on rails crap.

This is great news, as a big fan of the originals I was going to buy this anyways no matter what, now I have a great vita game and the ps3 version for only 39.99? Awesome. However Canadian EB Games shows it still at $59.99 heh.

I don't think it necessarily says anything about the game's quality one way or the other.  Remember Nuts and Bolts?  That game was a stellar discounted release.  I'm guessing they're just trying to push it to a wider market.

Awesome, just played through the original 3 in the HD collection last year after skipping them when they originally released. Those games still hold up very well especially the second and third games in the series. Seeing how this once is being made by the same dudes that made the HD collection (which was fantastic), I'm thinking i might have to pick this up now.

@hughesman: Same here, the HD collection was the first time I played those games and they're great. Although I think I like Sly 1 the most, I preferred the level structure of that one compared to the other two.

I am glad that some games are going cheaper. Like Sonic Racing last year. I think more games should come out at a smaller price. Not all of them will sell at the 60$ price.

@DarthOrange: You have to hurry and finish them. Easily my favorite series out of Jak, Ratchet & Sly.

@Snowgoons: They'll be switching the price. I asked on the PS Blog and the author said the price will be switched.

@Phatmac: Of course they have faith in it. It's just common sense that the game won't sell at $60.

Someone on the PS Blog said it doesn't come with a code. He said:

Crossbuy games on retail disc, the disc has a section you launch from the XMB called disc benefits.. this will launch from the disc to allow you do download the vita digital from store.. Think of cross buy ps3 disc as the gateway to vita version, its not a redeem code etc.

    So there ya go.

This made me extremely happy when I read this article. I know this game won't be a let down if the developer followed Sucker Punch's route of making a Sly Cooper game. I have a good feeling I'll be getting more bang for my buck.

Sly 1 had great level design but Sly's 2 & 3 were lack luster. However Sly 3 had terrific writing. If the devs are able to match the gameplay in 1 with the writing in 3 they could have something great. Sly's 2 & 3 had terrible checkpointing but at the time a lot of games did. The characters who you could play as other than Sly were boring. Sly seems like the only character that was designed to get around the hub worlds. Getting to and from mission markers as anyone else was a pain in the ass and not very interesting. The level design just never lived up to 1.

Looking at Sly 4 I'm not a fan of the shift in art style. I prefer the more comic booky look than the cartoon one they are going for. However playing the demo and seeing some early footage they've improved the voice acting and character animations. The demo makes it seem like Sly and his ancestors are going to have levels in the vein of the original Sly Cooper. The voice acting seems improved. Carmelita doesn't want to make me scream at the TV to figure out what accent she's using. The character animations are better. The environments look great. I just hope the writing can live up to 3.

    For $40 I'm tempted.

    And fucking Carmelita.

So anyone with Sly Cooper knowledge play the demo? How's it stack up? I tried it out. I've never played a Sly Cooper game before tho. I found Sly to be pretty fun to play as well as Bentley. Murray was kind of.... bleh. I couldn't shake the feeling that it was a PS2 game HDified or something tho. I love the art style but graphically it was nothing amazing. The screen prompts and maps and stuff looked way too big for like it was originally made for SD or something.

I mean, it seemed alright overall. I guess the 40 buck price point helps but that gives me the impression they lacked confidence in it. The demo was just the prologue though... you do a Back to the Future-esque thing in your van and the demo ends.

Just played the demo and based off that I will gladly play $40 for the final product. The demo is just the opening cut-scenes and tutorial, it plays exactly like the old games so it doesn't show off anything new on the gameplay front. But it does feel very polished and the quality of the animations is a step up from the Sucker Punch games. Kind of wish they had gone further with the cel-shading and pushed the shader effects closer to something like Wind Waker but it is quite a good looking game for what it is.

I'm a little worried that Sanzaru won't play around with the Sly Cooper gameplay as much as I would like to see them do. Delivering a solid new entry in the series in the mold of the Sucker Punch games is fine but I kind of wish this was the next evolution of the franchise instead of just another entry with prettier graphics.

That said its been about 7 1/2 years since Sly 3 and its tough as a new developer following up on a well respected franchise so I'll give them a pass on gameplay innovation if they just want to deliver a solid polished new game and based on the demo it feels like they are delivering on that.

@handlas: The $40 price point isn't because they're not confident for their game. It's just the right thing to do. People are WAY more likely to pay $40 for that game then $60. At this price, the game will sell better. I even saw that Nuts & Bolts sold at a discounted price and people LOVED that game. So it's not because of the quality, it's to make the game a no-brainer purchase.

Since I picked up the Sly collection, I am playing through the first one again and will probably start on the 2nd afterwards, so hopefully I don't get burnt out. Otherwise, I will just pick this game up for the Vita when I eventually pick a Vita up (kind of waiting for a price drop and cheaper memory cards).

I would say after finishing 3, you should probably let your mind cool down for a bit. I once spent a entire week playing the first three Ratchet games back in the day.
