    Overview

The SOCOM series started in 2002 with the first game which started Sony's online network for the PlayStation 2.  The series started off very popular, raking up to 30,000 people a day at peak game times. The series went off to

continue its success with the launch of SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs. SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy SEALs featured dramatic changes to the gameplay, adding vehicles to the playing field. This concept hit a brick wall with the hardcore SOCOM fans as they found vehicles to have changed the tactical, slow-paced gameplay of SOCOM. Many began condemning the developer, Zipper Interactive, and asked for the next sequel to be more intimite, and close-quarters, than an open battle which SOCOM 3 was described to be. Zipper released SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Combined Assault, expanding on SOCOM 3's gameplay philosophy, but also bringing more close-quarters maps. Many did not know how to react to this, as vehicles had not been removed, which was the number one demand from fans, but gameplay was a bit more close-quarters. The removal of blood and the switch from a "Mature" game to a "Teen" game was also an issue that many fans found with the series. Zipper Interactive moved on from the SOCOM series to start a new one, MAG: Massive Action Game for the PLAYSTATION 3. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) gave the SOCOM project to Slant Six Games. Slant Six began communication with SOCOM fans through SOCOM.com. They reassured their fans that they were going back to SOCOM's roots, and removing vehicles. They also said that they were going back to SOCOM I and II's map style by making the maps very close-quarters. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation, the newest online only sequel, was released on October 14, 2008 to varied reviews and severe connection issues.

    PlayStation Portable (PSP) Versions

SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs also moved onto the PSP with SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 1 and 2. Slant Six Games created SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike, making the game more of a strategy game than before, with different gameplay options. The fourth game on the PSP is Socom: U.S. Navy SEAL's Fireteam Bravo 3, which returns to the action orientated roots of games 1 and 2, rather than Tactical Strike.
