So I'm planning on doing some blogs on the various sonic games since after I did one on a weird fan game I went back and basically relived the entire franchise. I mostly want to focus on where the games fell out of most people's sacred cow territory and look at those, and also starting with Sonic 1 would be a bit boring because I don't have much to say about it. So when would you say Sonic stopped being enjoyable, or at least dropped in quality?

Around the 4th or 5th time I died in the very first game because the platforming and level design isn't so great.

Those hot Knuckles rap songs are probably the high point of the entire franchise.

A ghost tried to approach me.

    He got leery.

I actually enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2, and still enjoy the gameplay of it today (though really just the Sonic stages). The A-E rating system trained you to play in such a way that when you finally got an A rating on a stage, you just felt like a badass.

When Sonic Heroes came out, though, I fell off the bandwagon. That was the game that finally made me hate Sonic's friends. Having to manage and switch between three characters at once while platforming felt too cumbersome. It just kept reminding me how awesome a 3D Sonic game could be with just Sonic.

Ah well, Sonic Generations scratched that itch pretty well. Too bad Sega will never make another one like it.

If anyone here hasn't played Generations it's currently in the Humble Sega Bundle along with Sonic Adventure, Sonic & All Stars Racing: Transformed and a bunch of other games that do not contain the word Sonic in the title.

Adventure 2: Battle on the Gamecube is the only Sonic game I have ever put a meaningful amount of time into, so I would say I got out while I was ahead.

I never really liked sonic to be honest, I do not find the gameplay fun at all.

They are all tedious as hell for different reasons imo, even the old mega drive games, except those where at least still charming and had cool music/graphics for the time. But even 5/6 year old me thought there was "something" not ok about it even if I didn't understand what.

I was kinda wowed by sonic adventures when it came out though but never owned it back then. But after playing it for a while recently.....oh boy haha I wouldn't really call that game fun

EDIT: OH WAIT I actually kinda liked the ds games...although I dont believe I played more than a few levels of them and I dont remember much from them except for a boost button which made you at least accelerate a little faster, I was always prepared to give sonic a chance because as a little kid I actually really liked the sonic characters and cartoon ( remember 5 or 6 years old haha) too bad that doesnt last forever :')

I remember playing Sonic 1 at a friends place and Instantly pestered my parents to buy the game. That being said it seemed the people that considered the Genesis as "Golden Age" of the Sonic series seem to forget a lot of the low points like Spinball, 3D Blast, the dropped Sonic Crackers, and etc. The Saturn granted didn't have much but I'll admit I'm a sucker for the Sonic R soundtrack. The Dreamcast had a good idea of what a 3D Sonic game could be with the open world of SA1 and seem to bloat the idea with superfluous characters who essentially played the same way(SA2). Released Sonic Heroes to less than favourable acclaim and then came up with the idea of a online poll of which character (If I remember right, never participated...) should be in the star of the next game and that is where Shadow the Hedgehog came from...

Again this is from what I heard from the often ridiculed Sonic '06.. But, from what I've read is that it was released in what was considered to be an alpha build (Think AC:Unity, or other high-budget games that have released in a near broken state) to make the holiday sales window. I'll admit the time between 2002 - maybe 2010? when Sonic Colours came out is when they started getting it right again.

Though, I'll agree with Jim Sterling that Sonic Team had the right idea and full-heartedly agree with the fact that the "Hedgehog Engine" left us with the best looking and arguably the best playing 3D Sonic games with Colours and Generations... They had a great engine that complemented the Sonic style but threw it away similarly like they did with the "Canvas Engine?" which was used for Valkyria Chronicles PS3 game...

Or, go the Nintendo route and release the same game with minimal tweaks decade after decade banking on Nostalgia...

I can't say I ever found the Genesis games very compelling when playing them at friend's houses as a kid. The games are billed on running like a maniac, but when I do I end up in some spikes. For what it's worth I did get into Sonic Chaos pretty hard on the Game Gear because I owned it. Maybe if I owned a Genesis in the day I would have appreciated Sonic more. Thanks to PlayStation plus I own Sonic 1 and 2, but I just have too many games to play these days to spend time seeing if I'd like them today.

That being said, I did go through a Sonic phase as a kid. It probably had more to do with this cartoon then any of the games:

Not voting in the poll, there's no option that suits my experience.

I still think Miles "Tails" Prower is cool.

Sonic Heroes was the first Sonic game to truly disappoint me, and I owned a Game Gear. I mean I kinda knew but as a kid I just convinced myself "well it's not my favorite but it's still good".

If you're going for chronological order, Sonic CD is in the wrong spot since it came before Sonic 3. It's also a terrible fucking game, but I love 3&K so I guess that's the answer.

P.S., it bums me out how much the GB community seems to hate the Sonic games. I mean, it's totally fair once you get to the Adventure games and beyond, but man.

Sonic CD was the last one I enjoyed and I would argue it was the best Sonic overall. I like how you just ignored the existence of Sonic 3D Blast. I wish I could forget my time spent playing it as it was probably the worst game I have ever played.

Sonic has always been clunky to me, but I remember being really impressed by the dual cartridge wizardry at my friend's house.

Honestly back in the 90's when I borrowed my friends Genesis for a week and rented Sonic from Blockbuster I had no idea how to play the game. I was an avid gamer up to that point, enjoying stuff like Doom, Stunts or Descent. I had seen all the advertising and Sonic looked like a cool dood. So I pop this thing in and I'm supposed to run to the right but everything is going so fast I can't even tell whats going on. It looked real pretty but I just never enjoyed the gameplay. Even games like Rocket Knight Adventures seemed to control and play better than Sonic.

So if you click on videos for Sonic The Hedgehog you get to watch a strange 2009 addition to this here website.

I think the funniest thing is the video description.

Anyway, Generations is one of my favorite games of the generation no pun intended. All this Sonic discussion has made me remember Sonic Shuffle, if you think Mario Party is bad (and it is and you should) just play Sonic Shuffle.

Sonic 3+Sonic and Knuckles was the pinnacle. Played Sonic CD for the first time a few years ago, it's excellent. The last Sonic game I really enjoyed after that chronologically was probably Sonic Advance 3.

The Adventure games are all quantifiably terrible though, they just seemed special at the time.

That... that wasn't good Hip-Hop... right?

I was semi-joking. I think it's just as enjoyable as the rest of the music in the games. It's cheesy and pretty stupid but catchy and charming...for the right people. I do enjoy the song. I don't like the term "guilty pleasure" but that's probably the term that fits here. haha

Fair. Putting it that way, it's just as stupid as the cheese rock they have on the same soundtrack and I think that's terribly-awesome so I get you.

Sonic Adventure because at the time I was impressed by it in the same way I was impressed on the Mega Drive. Running from that whale in SA made me think Sonic was cool again, but then you play as Biggs The Cat and you realize the game is bad. Looking back now I would say Sonic 2 is the only one I actually like, but even that is not really that good. Sonic was so cool as a kid in the 90's but the games where never that great. Sonic 2 was the height and I can stll enjoy it but as a platforming game it has nothing on Mario World.

    Post Sonic Generations.

Sonic Lost World was not fun, and Sonic Boom isn't even a Sonic game. It's a Sonic game on name alone.
