Yep, it's a good way to get the idol without setting off the boulder (if you exit quickly enough). Also, I usually bomb to the side of the idol platform, that way I can jump up and grab the idol when I'm ready, instead of avoiding an explosion.

You don't just have to use the exit for this, if you "cash out" the idol in any way fast enough, the boulder wont fall. That is, you can also do this by quickly dropping it in a shop or putting it on an altar. A Spelunky pro tip.

Ah, I've always exited right away when doing that maneuver.
