So I was skimming the forum trying to find some information about Origin. I know some people have had horror stories with it and even go as far to avoid it if at all possible. With the eve of SWTOR almost upon us I am seeing if there is anything I should be concerned about with using the service to preorder or purchase?

Are there any pros/cons that could be drawn up for a super noob like myself?

IF you want to play TOR you're using Origin one way or the other. You don't really have a choice.

EA is Origin, SWTOR is EA, so Origin is SWTOR. Like trying to play Half Life 2 without Steam.

So wrong. TOR doesn't use Origin at all.

Once TOR is on your comp is has nothing to do with Origin...it doesn't even have to be on.

Are there avenues for digital download other than Origin? Genuinely curious.

The horror stories are completely blown out of proportion by people who are incapable of accepting that there's more than Steam for digital download services. The worst thing is something you can completely avoid. The forum bans having an impact on game access is probably the worst aspect of the EA service and you don't really need to post on the EA forums. Anyway, I don't think you'd want to because they're awful.

The Origin client itself has less system resource usage than Steam by quite a bit and you never really use it for anything other than buying games. The friends list in Origin is different than BF3's friend list, for example. They offer you the ability to import from Origin. You can pretty much just ignore the client.

Only time I saw anything Origin related was when I pre-ordered the game.

    It's stand alone.

I downloaded the client from the star wars site, and launch it with a star wars launcher.

I haven't seen anything origin related at all.

For those that didn't go through origin what did you use to preorder the game?

I used...well, Origin! But as far as I know, I could uninstall Origin and keep playing. The only thing Origin was ever involved in was processing the card info, and then e-mailing me my game codes...which I then proceeded to use on the SWTOR site and downloaded the game from there.

In fact, the only reason I even still have Origin on here, is because of BF3.

...this is for early access anyway - but I can't imagine that it would be any different at launch.

I've bought the digital delux edition off Origin and have never used Origin once.

All you have to do is go to www.swtor.com/download and you get the game client there and then. I logged onto the origin webstore to buy the game and they emailed me my product key which I used on the official SWTOR website.

I preordered the game off of Amazon and was emailed an early access code, which I entered directly on the TOR website to access the game downloader. I have Origin installed for Battlefield 3, but it hasn't interacted with TOR at all.

Going to close this because everyone is saying essentially the same thing. Origin is not required to play SWTOR.
