StarCraft II's "Devil's Playground" offered one of the more unique twists on traditional RTS campaign design. At timed intervals in the mission, magma floods the map's floor, making for some stirring play as you attempt to strip the terrain's mineral-laden belly as fast as you can and constantly prepare to flee to the relative safety of the high ground before the molten flood rushes in. And as unique as the mission is, its experience will no longer be tied to the campaign. "Burning Tide," the first official custom map from Blizzard, is a riff on Devil's Playground that seeks to combines the themes of the mission with competitive play.

Announced via the official StarCraft II blog, "Burning Tide" is described as a 3v3 map that has one goal: "greed." Like in the campaign mission that it's inspired by, you'll be competing against lava and your foes in an attempt to gather as many resources as possible, while at the same time attempting to keep your own spending down.

The map is available for download right now in the game's custom client. I'll warn you before you download that a few users are complaining about unbalanced play, while even more are complaining about a serious lack of vespene gas (though, to be fair, we always require more vespene gas). I don't know of a single SCII thread on the Internet that doesn't somehow involve these two complaints, so you may as well give this free map a spin if you'd like.

I haven't played multiplayer once and don't really feel like doing so but the idea of this map is really cool. Could make for some cool matches with the pros to watch.

I found it funny that after all the "terran is OP" comments they release a map that's..to be fair pretty favourable to teran what with my base being able to fly about.

But I've not played it yet perhaps the minerals are all on high ground.

Any type of campaign type map is a good idea, even if the first attempts are unbalanced.

Neat idea, but I found that level really stressful so it's hard to see myself playing a game on this map. Hopefully there'll be some interesting matches on it uploaded to youtube though, I'd like that.

Sounds like an interesting way to play; especially with Greed since that's a mode that doesn't get a whole lot of love.

I played a few 2v2 on this map and I thought it was pretty fun, good map to goof around with friends on. If you play with teammates then one can focus on mining while the other can run
harassment. This seems like a cool trend.

I should probably finish the damn campaign first before jumping in to custom nonsense.  Though good to see the community pumping maps that I can rock into at my convenience!  I can't quit you SC2!

Your starting base only has one gas geyser, and the map obviously encourages air. Terrans have a huge advantage because of the flying buildings, vikings which cost less gas than any other air unit, and marines which are amazing anti-air units that cost no gas at all, as opposed to the other two races where ALL the mobile aa units cost gas. (Except the zerg queen, which you can't really use as attacking units in this map because you can't spread creep with all the lava.)

That level looks really good, but seems like it would suck for zerg or protoss who need to expand, when a terran can just lift off from the lava
