Origin moved away from the 2D sprite based graphics of the Wing Commander games and started development of Strike Commander in 3D. Using techniques such as  Gouraud shading, Origin created one of the most graphically stunning games of its time.
 
Development of Strike Commander was very taxing on Chris Roberts and Origin, something which Roberts commented on in the game manual.
