    Overview

Sugoroku, loosely translated to "pair of sixes", refers to Japanese board games where players roll ordinary dice to determine how many spaces forward their piece moves on the game board in an effort to reach their intended goal first. While it has its origins as a game nearly identical to backgammon, the name "sugoroku" now commonly refers to the modern e-sugoroku (or "picture sugoroku"). Despite its simplicity, it is often seen as the base for multiple party-style video games and mini-games, with most having "Sugoroku" in the name.

Unlike the older "board sugoroku" (or ban-sugoroku), modern sugoroku has no unified set of rules, just that players use either dice or a spinner to move their piece forward on the track. Similar to Game of the Goose and Snakes and Ladders, many sugoroku games have special events that are activated once a player lands on a space.

One of the most prominent game series utilizing a sugoroku-style mode is the Mario Party series.
