Sylvanas is the middle child of the Windrunner sisters, and was a former High Elf ranger, who fought in the second and third wars.
During the third war, Sylvanas was a defender of Silvermoon during the invasion of the Scourge. She battled against the forces being led by Arthas Menethil, but was pushed back into a constant retreat by the seemingly endless horde of undead at his command. Eventually, Arthas took on Sylvanas himself, and she was wounded mortally during the fight.
Arthas however, would not give her the peace that death would bring her, and instead her tortured what remained of her, until finally she died. As a means of petty revenge, Arthas brought Sylvanas back as one of the first High Elf banshees. As a mindless tool of the Scourge, she helped lay siege to her own homelands, and aided Arthas in his quest to take control of the Sunwell.
When the Lich King’s control over the undead began to weaken, Sylvanas began to regain her free will, and returned to her body, becoming a corporeal being once again. She eventually regained complete control over her own mind, but kept this secret from Arthas. She then attempted to defeat Arthas, and wounded him with a poison tipped arrow. Arthas was angered greatly at her betrayal and demanded she finish him, but she wanted him to live, so that she could make him suffer as she had suffered at his own hands.
Before that could happen, Kel’Thuzad arrived and killed her banshees, and chased her off, leaving Arthas free to escape to Northrend.
Sylvanas used whatever forces she could muster after this, and attacked the remaining dread lords controlling the plague lands. As she emerged victorious, she declared that she would rule as the queen of the newly founded Forsaken.
As the leader of the freed undead, she’s had to deal with members of the Scarlet Crusade, as well as lingering traces of the Scourge. She seeks to find a lasting freedom for her people, and has played an instrumental role in getting the Horde to accept the Blood Elves into their ranks.
