Scandinavia meets fantasy in a satisfying turn-based classic.
Whilst the story was slightly disjointed and difficult to follow, the basic premise of the Banner Saga was fantastic. You, your Clansmen, Fighters and Varl - alongside a caravan of refugees - must find a way. A classically Tolkien-esque tale; the odds felt immeasurably stacked against me, with despair experienced at every turn.
Oftentimes I was left wondering, is this survivable? A quick glance at my supplies and morale reaffirming my initial fears. The fights became more brutal and hard fought; rarely would I succeed without injured heroes. As satisfying as a win felt, I dreaded to contemplate the consequences of the battle. Moments of respite and relief peppered an otherwise intense 10 hours of struggle. Eucatastrophe never felt within reach.
A strong 8/10.
