The Border Lands is a browser-based, deliberately retro, 16-bit take on Borderlands developed by Gearbox in the lead up to the release of Borderlands 2.

Concepts

Arena Combat

Some games offer alternate modes or specific sections of the storyline that involve arena combat, gladiator style.
Bandit

A rogue character who doesn't obey the law, bandits are known to steal from people for their own selfish gain.
Currency

Currency has all forms in video games. It is used to buy characters, vehicles, weapons, and more.
Damage Numbers

A specific number that briefly floats above an enemy after an attack which displays the exact amount of damage the attack has done.
Death

The main line of distinction between victory or failure in video games, death is the process of a biological being ceasing to be alive.
Deliberately Retro

Sometimes designers add old-school things on purpose to enhance game design.
Demake

A remake/re-imagining of a game that uses lower fidelity assets, due to a deliberate design choice.
Digital Distribution

Digital Distribution is the concept of purchasing digital media via the internet and having it sent to the user directly via the internet. No physical representation of this content is given but the content resides on the users hard drive and is legally owned by them.
Experience Points

Experience Points are part of a character advancement system commonly found in RPGs. These points are generally gained by defeating an enemy or completing a task.
Facebook Connectivity

Games that can link up to Facebook for additional features.
Games Advertising Games

When there is in-game advertising in one game for a different title, normally one by the same developer.
Giant Insects

Giant Insects are insects and other 'bugs' that are far larger than in the real world. Some are about half the size of a human, others are bigger than buildings. Larger than life or gigantic insects are a common element in many video games, especially those of the RPG Genre.
High Score

In many games there is a ranking system, the players with the highest point value are listed in a "high score" table.
Infinite Ammo

A concept in a game where the playable character can't run out of ammo, and doesn't need to pick up/buy ammo. In some cases, you still have to reload your weapon, but you will still have an endless amount of clips.
Language Selection

Games with language selection allow the player to choose which language is displayed or spoken in the game.
Leveling Up

The process by which characters reach a new level, gain greater attributes, and learn more abilities. It usually involves earning enough experience points by completing a variety of tasks such as quests or by "farming" such as killing other characters for their experience points.
Lives

The concept of lives in video games evolved to let the player get a second chance after failing once. The most recognizable symbol is the heart.
Loot Gathering

Collecting objects in a game such as weapons, armor, items, and currency. Loot is often associated with MMOs and games with RPG elements.
Rakk

The Rakk is an enemy type in Borderlands.
Random Loot

Random Loot is a popular concept for dungeon crawler and MMO style games. In essence, monsters or objects drop something that is considered valuable to the player with random qualities.
Reloading

Reloading is the action of replacing the ammunition magazine inside a gun. It adds a touch of realism to most modern shooters, and a certain amount of tension when a player is forced to reload while under fire.
Respawn

Respawning is when a player or NPC dies and then reappears moments later - usually in a predetermined location or group of locations - while the game continues.
Run 'N Gun

A term used to describe the flow of action in a typical action game, where the pace is pre-defined to feature fast action and require quick reflexes. As the name suggests, these are games where the player character can run and shoot at the same time.
Skag

Skags are vicious, dog-like creatures found in Borderlands. Skags will attack anything that isn't another skag on sight, tearing into them with razor-sharp claws and teeth, and their ability to jump surprising distances for facial attacks. Some have even developed the ability to spit wads of corrosive acid at prey.
Top-Down Perspective

The top-down perspective is a camera angle used in video games to show the player and the area around him or her from above. The perspective is commonly seen in 2D RPG games and strategy games.
