Now that it's gone free...

#1 Posted by DaManGB (377 posts) -

As you might know Lord of the Ring Online goes free today. Is anyone going to play it due to it becoming F2P? I made an account and began playing however since I already play World of Warcraft I don't have time to play other MMO's.

#2 Posted by Druminator (1678 posts) -

I dunno, worth a shot. Might check it out later tonight.

#3 Posted by Skytylz (4033 posts) -

Yah, I probably will eventually.

#4 Posted by Diamond (8634 posts) -

I actually would if I hadn't played the beta and been bored to tears over the newb zone.  So much of what is free is so boring.

#5 Posted by Glak (613 posts) -

Yes! Free!
Although with all the other games coming out now, not sure if I'll have the time
Although LoTRO has always been a game I've kept an eye on

#6 Posted by Grissefar (2842 posts) -

I've played it when it wasn't free and it can be a fun distraction from WoW for a week or two. Nothing more though. It's not near the quality product that is WoW. One might call it janky in comparison.

#7 Posted by NekuSakuraba (7241 posts) -

Definitely.

#8 Posted by scarace360 (4828 posts) -

Ill give it a shot.

#9 Posted by Venatio (4491 posts) -

Downloading it right now, hope it's good, been waiting for a while

#10 Posted by FunExplosions (5407 posts) -

I could not get into that game. The animations and the feel of the battles just felt so... dull. I'm sure I was missing something, though. Maybe I should have tried a ranged/spell class.

#11 Posted by blackbird415 (777 posts) -

eventually maybe. My brother and I try to find free mmos to play together since he lives in california now and I live in colorado

#12 Posted by MichaelBach (883 posts) -

Dungeons & Dragons Online is better. Also free, same system and all.

#13 Posted by RandomInternetUser (6789 posts) -

Thanks for reminding me about this, I'm downloading it now. I'll probably play a character for 20 minutes then say "meh" and go back to WoW :P  That's what I always do, but that 20 minutes is pretty fun.

That's what I did. It's hard to play a game so similar when you have time and money invested in the other.
#15 Posted by Venatio (4491 posts) -

So I'm in the middle of installing it and it's asking for a product key, where do I find that?

#16 Posted by Azteck (7449 posts) -

Maybe if I'm really bored.

#17 Posted by ZimboDK (848 posts) -

I might go back to it. I always liked that it was solo friendly.

#18 Posted by adoggz (2067 posts) -

yeah, we need to get the crew back together from runes of magic

#19 Posted by Hourai (2795 posts) -

You guys should play on Landroval. The community on that server is great.

#20 Posted by t_blok@live.nl (15 posts) -

It's still not free in EU so I'm stil fucked >.>

Can't wait tho, I used to play it a lot and I still have a ways to go till the Mines of Moria!

So is there microtransactions? What do you still buy and what not?
#22 Edited by angryphil (83 posts) -

I was in the beta for free to play, I am not sure why, but it seemed very "rough", all of the animations were very crude and all of the character models were very basic, and the soundtrack was pretty weak as well. I really tried to give it a chance because I really love LotR, but I just could not do it.

There are wizard classes in the game? Well, that pretty much unsold me on the game. When will devs learn to respect the mythos of JRR Tolkien fiction?
#27 Posted by BionicMonster (1032 posts) -

Is it just me or did they lower the graphical settings and over all quality?

ahhhh AHHHHHHHHH someelse who knows.... I...... I thought I was the only one!!! *tears of joy*
#29 Posted by FixerofDeath (308 posts) -

I'm playing the game for the first time now. It is nowhere near as polished as WoW. The movement and combat, compared to WoW, feel awful. It's not really a bad mmo, just incredibly average.

Now that the game is free to play, it also looks like the developer has put so many microtransactions in the game, as to make it seem unplayable. The servers are also all really laggy at this point in time - though, thats likely due to the influx of player from F2P so I'll let that slide.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, I'm not really sure. I think I remember there being healing/spell casting classes, but I could be wrong. I only played it for a day, and that was at least a year ago. Regardless of its Tolkien-accuracy, the game was just boring to me. Take a game like Anarchy Online... that game has horrendous graphics, a dwindling userbase, and almost no patches/updates, yet it's still great because of how fun and in-depth it is. Games like this (WoW games) are just too boring for me. (<--ME )
#31 Posted by IcySandman (474 posts) -

Ooh  downloading now.  I had fun during the big GB Runes of Magic thing, but I really wanted to play this more than anything.

#32 Posted by Aronman789 (2676 posts) -

i would, but FTP versions of MMOs are almost always crap, just ways to show you a shit ton of reason you should upgrade, like WAR's way of showing you bag spaces you could get if you purchased, and a screen popping up that tells you the awesomeness of subscribing during loading or leveling up, i think MMOs should just stick to trials

#33 Posted by empfeix (774 posts) -
so basically everyone played it like I did and went, meh and just stopped playing, haha

@FixerofDeath:
 I hate you btw
#34 Posted by FixerofDeath (308 posts) -
@empfeix: Why might that be?

I'm downloading the game now. Oh god this is a mistake.

If anyone plays this, you could tell me which server you're on so we could go on mad loot quests together.

We need to play the same server.
#40 Posted by Jeust (10643 posts) -

Good luck guys!

I would play, but I've been busy now, so I better not. ^^

#41 Posted by TaliciaDragonsong (8699 posts) -

Still waiting for the EU version to become F2P.

I want to explore the Mines of Moria and I need to at least get there so I don't feel like I wasted 30 euro's last year!

Drums in the deep....!

#42 Edited by Coombs (3449 posts) -

I'm installing it now,
But I won't be on for long.......  Reach calls

#43 Posted by JJWeatherman (14558 posts) -
@TaliciaDragonsong: I just watched The Fellowship of the Ring and I love the mines or Moria scene.

I am way too into Lord of the Rings right now. Within the past few days I've actually watched The Fellowship of the Ring three times, two of them with separate audio commentary tracks. This is the extended version DVD too, so it's well past 3 hours.

I don't know what the server options are, but the few of us that are installing/playing right now should try to choose the same one.
#44 Posted by Coombs (3449 posts) -

So I'm choosing a server now there's 15 to choose from,  Which one should I go to?
the top of the list is one called Gladden.  Unless someone replies in the next couple minutes that's what I'm going with.

I'll go with Gladden too.

just so everyone knows if you hate grinding you're going to hate this game. i played for about 2 days when it wasnt free and i wanted to kill myself.

#47 Posted by DragonBloodthirsty (470 posts) -

My brother played in the beta.  He also played DDO, but he said LotR wasn't as good because it didn't have the easy party matching in DDO, and wasn't different enough to make up for it with a new experience.

I might try it out, because when I played a free trial ages ago (when it first came out) it was almost just like WoW.  I don't expect to like it much, but maybe things have changed since then.  DDO sucked back in the day, but isn't too bad now.

Good luck, folks. As a long time (lifetime subscribing) LOTRO player, I envy your first foray into the game. It's not for everyone, but some of you will fall in love. Just remember to let the game work it's magic --it's not as flashy or fast as WoW, but if you love story and lore, you'll feel at home.

And yes, Moria kicks all kinds of ass.

Sorry for the misuse of "it's". Spelling autocorrect on my iPad does that a lot.
